Dear friends and followers, in today´s video we´ll be talking about "If pilots can wear glasses" ?
The answer is yes - you can wear glasses and be an airline pilot - you don’t need to have perfect vision. However you are required to have a certain standard of vision as outlined below.
The standards vary from country to country so If in any doubt, you should contact an Authorised Medical Examiner (AME) in the country that you anticipate completing your flight training in.
‘An applicant may be assessed as fit with hypermetropia not exceeding +5.0 dioptres, myopia not exceeding -6.0 dioptres, astigmatism not exceeding 2.0 dioptres, and anisometropia not exceeding 2.0 dioptres, provided that optimal correction has been considered and no significant pathology is demonstrated. Monocular visual acuities should be 6/6 or better.’
Distant visual acuity, with or without correction, shall be 6/9 or better monocularly, and 6/6 or better binocularly.
You will require a comprehensive ophthalmological examination on your initial assessment then every 5 years up to your 40th Birthday and then every 2 years.
Plus:
Pilots are required to carry a spare pair of spectacles
Pilots are not allowed to wear polarised glasses (there is a video out about that topic in my channel)
Bifocal contact lenses are not approved
PLEASE BE ADVISED I AM NOT A DOCTOR AND THEREFORE CAN NOT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION REGARDING IF YOU CAN BECOME A PILOT IF YOU HAVE ISSUES WITH YOUR EYES. ASK A PROFESSIONAL AERONAUTICAL MEDICAL DOCTOR!!!
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

Please go and check yourself with an aeronautical medic before giving up your dreams. I didn't pass at first but after eye surgery i did meet the requirements and now I'm flying. Do everything you can.

Yeah I would encourage everyoen to do that. I was actually surprised that I pased easily (military pilots had some very strict rules and I thought they applied to commercial pilots for a while). Anyway I know that some pilots paid a lot for their training only to realize that for solo flight they needed the medical and they did not pass it. Besides it is always good to know about your health, that way you can do something about it.

I did the aeronautical medic test some months ago to see if I could become a pilot and I passed it, but they told me that I was on the edge limit regarding my vision, having 2.75 / 3 diopter. However, I feel like my vision is getting worse progressively so I'm afraid the next time I run the tests I don't pass it. I'm going to have eye surgery if I pass this limit but I'm afraid also that once I do that, my vision gets worse and there's nothing I can do after eye surgery... I really hope I don't reach that limit or else I don't know what I'll do

I was fine within the limits of a class 1 medical but outside of the limits of airlines which finance the training. So I just ended up flying in private and maybe not being so sad over the fact that I spare my daily X-ray. :)

GhostHostMemories i understand your point, but it is still sad if you can't fullfil your dreams because of something out of your control, talking about self experience, everyone in my family has bad eyesight, so i had eye surgery in order to pass the class 1 medical. There's a risk of becoming blind in this surgery too.

Antoni Modlinski eating carrots actually helps your eye on dark/night. At least that's what I know. It does not have any help on the general vision. Also getting for example myopia is most of the times pure genetics. Just like my self, I had 20/10 vision when I was a kid until 16-17, since 18 I started using glasses because it increased rapidly and got me by surprise at that age, just at the same time I started college. My dad uses so.. I got it. I'm 22 now.

Hi Joe, just to add to your knowledge on the color vision. I am a PPL pilot aspiring to fly commercially. I failed the ishihara but passed an anomaloscopy test (bare in mind each country in EASA can have various anomaloscopy tests for example Oculus). While in Slovakia I was told I am colorblind and can forget about flying other doctors went a step further to evaluate night bans, multi-crew only and still will give you a 1st class medical! Just a hint to anyone with problems in color vision, stick with it and do not give up.

Great channel Captain! I really enjoy all your videos, they help explain a lot of things I encounter during flight training. Just a follow up on the prescription, I contacted an Aviation Medical Examiner here in the states, and there is no limitation on prescription strength (diopters) for distant vision, the FAA requires you to have 20/20 for a first class medical at whichever prescription strength you may have. The restrictions on diopters kick in when one has misaligned eyes. I hope this helps clear the issue up. Looking forward to your future videos.

I'm in my mid-50s. The requirements for pilots back in the 1980s (which was the time I was making career decisions), were more stringent. Besides requiring 20/20 vision (no laser eye surgery back then), airlines preferred military pilots.

I got my medical before I started flight training: I was badly overweight and wanted to make sure I could proceed. With advancing age (sigh...) Which lead to me wishing I'd have started the journey years ago. But we both figured since health plays a Major part, bad vision would be a disqualifier for pilots. The next day, this video came out. This has changed. In the early 90s, there was no shortage of pilot applicants (and much fewer pilots needed) and there was no way that you got in with glasses - you needed 20/20 vision without correction. Once you were a pilot, this changed of course. I certainly could not have become a pilot, even though I am at less than 3 diopters (and rock solid stable since childhood).

Wow those diopter limits are actually rather lenient. I mean, I think it's fine, as long as the problem is correctable with glasses, there is no problem. Anyways, I find it funny that the limits for passing a train driver medical in my country are way stricter than FAA limits for getting a pilot medical. There used to be a complete ban on glasses for train drivers which was lifted only about 10 years ago and now the limits are +/- 2 diopters.

First let me say that I live in Germany and know the rules about the German medical. I don't know how it works in other countries, but I am sure its quiet similar...Usually when you get your medical and everything is in the norm you will get your medical right away. In my case(and a lot of other cases) if you are outside of this norm the doctor will send your results to a higher aviation authority (in Germany the LBA) and they will check and decide whether you can still receive your medical with certain additional legal requirements that you have to obey. In my case I of course have to wear glasses (or contacts) and always have a spear with me like Joe said. And the other part is a so called SIC. That is a special requirement that I have to get my eyes checked every other year apart from the actual medical renewal in order to make sure, that my eyes are not getting worse because of an illness. So even if you aren't in the norm you can still get the medical, but of course not guaranteed!

You suit the glasses, Joe. When I was about 4 my parents told me my vision was so bad I would never be able to drive a car. I replied that it was okay, I would just get a chauffeur. Even then the idea of not driving didn’t bother me but I realised then I would never fly and was gutted.

Not sure if you mentioned it but for first class medical you need to be 20/20 in each eye (not just one or the other or both together). Intermediate distance must be the same as near but if achievable at near then lenses would allow for intermediate if needed. I'm an Optometrist in the US and I think you did a good job breaking down the meaning of the chart, color anomalies, and other basics that people ask me about all the time.

Not in Europe (see below). It should be the same with the FAA standards. As long as you have an otherwise healthy eye that should not be a problem. Initial applicants who do not meet the requirements in (1)(ii), (iii) and (iv) above should be referred to the licensing authority. A fit assessment may be considered following review by an ophthalmologist. (3) At revalidation an applicant may be assessed as fit with: (i) hypermetropia not exceeding +5.0 dioptres; (ii) myopia exceeding -6.0 dioptres; (iii) astigmatism exceeding 2.0 dioptres; (iv) anisometropia exceeding 2.0 dioptres provided that optimal correction has been considered and no significant pathology is demonstrated.

Joe, very nice video as usual. I have a substandard vision at my right eye, only few percent but this disqualify me from medical class II nor I. But now by EASA it is possible to get LAPL licence medical class for GA aviation planes, SEP and less than 2000kg TOW and max 4 persons on board. There are some other limitations but this allow me to fill my dream to become a pilot. Of course not airliner but flying is passion and size is not important :). Hope this information can help some dreamers to fill they dreams, as I do.

During the early days glasses (in the form of aviation goggles) were a requirement as shielded cockpits were not a thing yet. on a side-note: I've heard of one pilot that had acquired some so-called jeweler's glasses after he had missed a minor crack (that he couldn't have been expected to notice) during preflight that led to his number 4 breaking off mid-flight

Watching this reminded me of the incredible feat of flying performed by the pilot of Flight TACA110, whose plane flamed out due to hail over the Gulf of Mexico and who landed on a levee in Louisiana. He only had sight in one eye due to being shot at as a young man. (It was featured in a Season 11 episode of Mayday/Air Crash Investigation, Nowhere to Land. It used to be available to watch on KZbin and if it's not there, it's probably up on Dailymotion. Really amazing story.)

I was having pilot dreams after my first time ever in an airplane (15 minutes in a Cessna to see a city from above) but that was put on ice when I heard about the vision requirements and I started to wear glasses... I heard something about it not being ok to need glasses or contact lenses when starting training or something like that. So yeah, that put me down a fair bit... I have myopia and astigmatism, nothing extreme but without glasses or contact lenses I can’t even see the floor if I stand up, or see text on my computer screen or phone if it’s more than about a foot away or so. With glasses or lenses I have pretty good vision, although I see better on my right eye than my left as we can’t manage to fully correct my left eye. But oh well, now I’m a disabled almost 34 year old anyways... But it’s still on my bucket list to get to pilot an airplane one day, even if just for a minute or two with an experienced pilot with me. Extra bonus if it’s a fighter jet as I just love the sound of them, and love speed! There really isn’t much that is better than being at an air show and a fighter jet does a fly by on low altitude and lights those afterburners so you feel the sound all through your body. Went to my first air show at age 10 and loved every minute of it! Then add The Red Arrows performing there, and you have a very happy 10 year old! I had a huge poster of them on my wall for years after that show!
