He didn't just do that on his own in a garage. He had an entire team that had to use very expensive equipment over YEARS of research. He has to recoup the cost before being able to bring down the price. The price for this WILL go down. But new technology is always more expensive. Look at the first 1GB Harddrive...it cost 40.000 USD...yes..forty THOUSAND. Today you can buy a Terabyte for 50 USD or less. Research and development make up a lot of that. Let's say you spend 10 million USD to create a new harddrive that has 1 Petabyte of storage. You can now mass produce and sell this, but you are already 10 million in debt. Furthermore you will also have to fight off competition soon...because you might be the first...but once it's out, others will know how it's done and create their own...possibly even while BYPASSING any possible patents you have since they just need to make a few changes to your design. So what do you do? Of COURSE you charge THOUSANDS of dollars in the first year of selling it. You are the only one who can sell it right now and need to make back your money before your time is up. This is why, if you need this...you only have to wait a little bit until A: The recoup their initial spending/R&D "debt" and B: until other companies start copying the design for cheap...as they had only a fraction of the R&D cost.

I've always been fascinated by the advancements in prosthetic limbs - dunno why, I have no need for them myself, but I'm utterly rapt to see how they've been improving over the years and restoring function to people who have lost limbs. When I was working in the centre of Hamilton (New Zealand), I'd frequently chat with one of the women who worked in a neighbouring building when we were outside on our cigarette breaks. One day, she was limping slightly so I asked her if she had injured her leg. She replied that she had a prosthetic leg and her good one was off being repaired so she had to use her older, not-as-advanced leg that day. Up to that point, I had had no idea that she had a prosthetic leg - goes to show just how good that "good" one was, eh.

I saw this video a few times since it was uploaded. And every time I tear up. My grandad is an amputee, he has one leg removed up to it's socket. His passive prostheses is good, it's like the best 90's technologie can make. It's newer, but the tech is the same it was when he received his first leg. I know that his quality of life would be better with a better prostheses. He is quite old (84) and he's now much weaker, so his passive prostheses while still being a help, is also more of a burden. It's a heavy piece of metal, plastic, and other stuff I can't easily carry. I fills me with joy to know that today for many people their traumas are almost completely remedied by the technology, and sometimes technology even bestowes surplus benefits instead of all the drawbacks. I so wish this was accessible to everyone. So that otherwise healthy people would walk and run instead of using passive prostheses or, worse, a wheelchair. Racing cars and other fancy useless entertainment? Scrap that, that tech is a leech of resources which should be invested into improving the quality of life. I'm not against entertainment in general, but some of its forms are ridiculously excessive, a total waste. (Of course I know that these developments go over to other technologies like conventional cars, but they still waste a lot for... for what?) This topic teaches right into my heart, I'm sorry for the long read.

I once saw a guy outside where I lived, with great physique and clearly exercised regularly, collecting mails with his girlfriend, walking and turning and doing all sorts of moves naturally... and he had prosthetic legs. Those were visually simplistically designed (now in hindsight I realised were) bionic prosthetic legs. I was in awe at how naturally he walked. I stared at them for so long in amazement and joy that I felt like a creep. Seeing these amazing technology in person was a very humbling experience, it made me want to contribute something great to the world too.

Hey, Derek! I was wondering if you could do a video about Biology vs Technology. To be more precise: Why is a biological body superior/inferior to technological. The advantages and disadvantages of cyborgs. Are our biological bodies simply just very advanced technological bodies? If so then when will we reach the tech to create, for example, regenerative technology(regenerative as our bodies are). And this topic, I think, if ever taken into consideration, should be analyzed by taking into account brains(brain technology?) and our body. If for example our bodies are highly advanced technological pieces then are our brains even more advanced than that? Can these two be even compared this way? For example if I crush an ant, then will I destroy technology far more superior than the technological advancements we've made so far? I find this topic very interesting and I sure can't be the only one. Cheers!

Technology imo is just much directed development to achieve certain task. All our natural bodies have on the other hand evolved slowly for millions of years in a completely undirected manner just based on survival of the fittest. Now that we have the ability to direct these changes ourselves, we don't need the entire slow natural selection process, we can just build what we want. We already have built legs comparable to our human ones. Only a matter if time when we are able to built artificial bodies which can completely supercede the abilities of our own bodies. Probably something equivalent will be possible for brain as well.

@@kunalsingh4418 Yes well. In a way the artificial bodies we've built are more superior to our biological bodies. They are more durable and often have more strength. However, they are not self-sustainable. I.e you cannot got into the nature and power that artificial body. This is something you can do with our biological body. At some point you could probably harness enough solar power and other energies to power your artificial body. It depends on the environment in which you want to keep it powered. Would be cool if we could power the artificial body via biological means as well (i.e eating :) ). I think brains in a way are much more complex though than any other part of the body. Specially in the function it serves. Every other organ we have has a "simple" task: pump blood, use oxygen, digest food for energy etc. And these functions they fulfill are much easier to replicate compared to replicating the function of the brain.

While u still use ur muscles(which means u will get tired)u will last significantly longer. And u wont get kramps. And u are less likely to get injured too

You will get tired quicker. You miss about 50 muscles and have to use more energy so you’ll tire out faster

It depends on the legs! There are many different prostheses, and if you look at the kind of legs Oscar Pistorius used to wear to run, they actually have a sort of spring action built into them, which does help propel you forward.

Same here. After I finish high school, I really want to learn mechanical or electrical engineering in college so that I can design and create prosthetics. I think it'd be really cool to see a future where prosthetics are seen not only as a solution to medical problems, but also as a luxury, and a sort of fashion statement.

Eliminating disability is about more than replacing a leg or an arm (or multiples of them) if you want to COMPLETELY eliminate disability you have to be able to replace spines, lungs, hearts, etc and that isn't even touching on the subject of mental disability. Its wonderful for people who can walk again but lets be realistic here, replacing arms and legs is probably the easiest fix of all of the disabilities.

Honestly, I can think of prosthetic legs not being too bad, but the hands are a completely different beast. Not having the presicion of a biological hand, even a Singular prosthetic finger would feel like a bigger challenge than the whole lower leg.

imagine if an oldman can amputate his arms and feet and replace those with Prosthetics Limbs. then they can now save more energy they get from food only for the remaining body parts. we can use other energy such as electricity to move the prosthetics limbs. therefore, now oldman can live longer
