I’m a fantasy football boomer. Been playing for over 20 years now. Robust was the standard back then when there was true workhorse guys all around. Frank Gore, Jamal Lewis, Shaun Alexander to name a few. But most leagues were standard (boo) scoring, so RBs had a bit more value even with scoring format. The NFL has changed to a pass heavy league. Offenses want efficiency and big plays vs the “grind it out” style of the past. Robust RB CAN i repeat CAN work but you have to get very lucky threading the needle of consistent production and year long health from those early pick RBs AND find value at WR to win that way. I typically like hero RB because it allows a more flexible draft. Don’t feel like I’m digging through the dumpster for a RB the whole time and can fill out my roster with value picks. The RB 2 will come and I pray my “hero” stays healthy.
@dennybasens24166 ай бұрын
1000% agree. Robust RB is an outdated strategy that was relevant in the days of workhorse running backs. I find it's used mostly by people that haven't adapted to the modern norms in fantasy. With all the split backfields... You can find so much value in RB from round 5 and on.
@andrewmarchese20526 ай бұрын
@@dennybasens2416 yessir. There is value to be had later in the draft and there is ALWAYS RBs that come out of nowhere so being active and aggressive on the waiver wire can pay off big.
@bretfoster48556 ай бұрын
It really comes down to your top picks staying healthy. And if you draft receivers early then their Qb’s must stay healthy too. The depth of good running backs are thin while the wr’s are much deeper. Making too rb’s more valuable.
@CornPopWazABadDude6 ай бұрын
The health seems to be the biggest issues I've had with going RB heavy. Can it work, obviously... But it seems the moon, sun and stars have to align with injuries for it to work whereas solidifying all other positions that are just flat out less likely to have injuries seems a more consistent way to get into the big dance at the end of the season. The best teams I've ever had, I seemed to find starting RBs on the waiver early in the season or drafted top handcuffs and sure enough those starters somebody else spent a top pick on got injured
@rollotomassi47686 ай бұрын
Yeah but because there is so much throwing, there are always many wr's that are fantasy viable. If I do hero rb, then the 2nd rb I take you have to grab the cuff, and I hate drafting cuffs.

@TDoanLe5 ай бұрын
It’s always about value, friend. Henry being taken at the 2 is fine, but his value is significantly better at 3. He’s getting old, he’s not the same ole Henry, an he’s likely to get injured just due to wear and tear. All he means is based on their their ADP, could you pick something better? Great example is Josh Allen/Pat Mahomes. Most likely to be your QB1-3. Having their value at later rounds is substantially better than early, because you miss out on SOO much drafting them too early. Henry may not have made it in yours, but he made it to 4.11 in a half PPR and IDP 12 man for ours, which, if you take out IDP, puts him closer to mid to late 3rd. So whoever got him got pretty good value there.

Harrison's price tag is insanely high... But when it comes to Taylor... He's been in the league four years. One of those years has been great. Three have been disappointing. If Richardson is healthy, he's cutting into Taylor's touchdown upside
@chrisclark27476 ай бұрын
@dennybasens2416 Taylor isn't without risk- he's a running back- but when healthy, he's far more valuable than Harrison. I'm not worried about Richardson. Yes, he will take some TDs, but they will score more TDs overall if both of them stay healthy and productive, so JT will still get his share.
@FantasyFootballAdviceFFA6 ай бұрын
On a one week sample it’s likely JT. The question is, who do you feel confident in producing that way for the entire season, and also how that pick impacts who you take later
@chrisclark27476 ай бұрын
@FantasyFootballAdviceFFA Sure, but it's also about upside. JT is more likely to get hurt, but Harrison could get hurt too. JT could be the No. 1 player in fantasy. There's no way Harrison will even be Top 5, likely not Top 12. JT v. Harrison is probably a bad example, because it's a no contest in my mind, but random Round 2 RB that is the clear bellcow for their team v. random Round 2 WR who is the clear No. 1 option in the passing attack on his team and I think it's still the RB. The RB likely has Top 5ish potential that the WR doesn't and the relative scarcity at the positions means that you're far more likely to find a WR that can produce as well as that Round 2 WR later in the draft than you are to find a RB that can produce as well as that Round 2 RB later in the draft. Plus, you're more likely to suffer injuries at RB, so you need to have high-end depth there. If you go Breece Hall, WR, WR, Ken Walker... Benson... Doodle, and then Hall gets hurt, you're likely screwed.

How would you tackle this position starting WR/WR? Appreciate it!
@matthewdennis17395 ай бұрын
I know you were asking Nick, but I think you really have three options. 1. You could take Pacheco/Achane/Jacobs in the 3rd if they are still there at your pick and they are the best player available. 2. You could take Cook or Mixon in the 4th if you feel good about them. 3. You implement a Zero-RB strategy and lock up an elite QB/TE combo, great WRs through the flex and then slam RBs in the Warren/Pollard/Spears/C. Brown/Zeke/Ford range. There are of course other options, but I think these are the best ones given the situation.

Robust RB … iMO… is less about taking RBs and more about manipulating the draft… going heavy on RBs early will create a deficit at the position and will cause other managers to step out of their comfort zones.. creating opportunities by dominating a position In the draft
@matthewdennis17395 ай бұрын
I wouldn't go robust RB if it wasn't what was dictated to me by taking best player available. I also think you may have been right a few years ago, but people are increasingly comfortable with going WR heavy, of course this can be different league to league and you know your league best. I don't think it will throw people off enough to matter in most cases, they will just adjust and scoop up value at other positions.

@@matthewdennis1739 sounds like you haven’t tried what I’m doing ✌️
@matthewdennis17395 ай бұрын
@@gardockis.playground I've gone robust RB before when the value dictated it. It didn't throw anyone else off their game. Also, what you individually do isn't going to impact everyone else that much, especially in the first few rounds. One team in a league going robust RB isn't going to create positional scarcity to the degree you're suggesting, so it would require a number of other teams doing the same thing, and if that happens there will be pockets of positional value elsewhere to capitalize on. Again, it might work in your specific league because you know how it works against your specific opponents, but I would highly, highly doubt it has any impact on average.

Should you not have re-evaluated your "robust" round 8 selection, since the format is 2RB and you have 3 through 7 rounds? Hollywood at the 8.06 and Dowdle at 10.06 is a better match to the build. This way you keep a similar player selection while showing how to adjust to each strategy.

This series is interesting, but I think what's missing is an analysis of why any of these strategies has an advantage over the others. In other words, why go hero RB over robust RB over zero RB. What's the thinking?
@FantasyFootballAdviceFFA6 ай бұрын
Really just comes down to value honestly. As I said, 2 RBs in the first 5 is optimal and none of those builds do that. So you’d deviate to those other ones when value presents itself. Among those 3 Hero has a strong championship rate, though some years Robust RB has dominated
@matthewdennis17395 ай бұрын
Value on the board should dictate your strategy. Take Best player available the first three rounds. What does your team look like? This is a decision point. If you have no RBs you need to look at who is available to you and decide if you might want to use a Zero-RB strategy and make sure you take an elite QB and Elite TE and then hammer RB rounds 7-10. If you have one RB you might want to go Hero-RB, but you can also take an RB there if you really like the value of one. *Note, the logic behind Hero/Zero RB is to avoid the RB dead zone, which has been a pretty consistent thing present in the data. This is usually rounds 3-6 though it can fluctuate a bit year to year and this year I'd say it's more 4-6. The dead zone is an area where WR production has typically greatly outstripped RB production and RBs have the greatest discrepancy in bust rates compared to WRs. This doesn't mean you can't take an RB in the dead zone though, some dead zone RBs do well, just on the average they do not an are a riskier choice. Therefore, on the average you should be taking WR or elite QB/TE in these ranges to have the best odds. This is what these strategies are built around. If you have two RBs I'd just continue doing best player available. If you have 3 RBs I would suggest not touching RB again until later and possibly going late round QB to get as many legit WRs + an elite TE as you can get in rounds 4-7. * Last caveat, obviously scoring and format change a lot as far as the viability of different strategies. As Nick has said many times a balanced 2 RB build in the first 5 has been typically ideal in .5 PPR, regular format leagues.
