Can SAND CATS Be Domesticated? | My Pet Sand Cat Kitten

In this video I will be discussing the domestication of sand cats, domesticated cats, and domestication in general. I own a sand cat as a pet and she is not what most people would consider to be a "good pet". She is not representative of all sand cats that are kept as pets. However, people who require the behavior of the "typical" pet should probably avoid getting most exotic pets. If an exotic pet is not right for you that doesn't mean you should attack people who do choose to have them.

I have a semi feral cat, and while she likes me and will sleep next to me, but she will hiss at my son, and act like your sand cat, if he gets too close to her. She was probably caught a little too late to be the perfect pet.

Sometimes to just depends on the traits. I had a very tame stray who I let move in and have her 5 kittens raised from birth in my home. All living as indoor cats for 2 years until allowed outside with a cat door. 2 fatalities meant no more cat door and only supervised outings afterwards.. A few males had mated with her producing an assortment of kittens in that litter. One male black cat was always like a shy feral being avoidant, shy, was often hiding if resting, reluctant to be approached, including by me all his life whenever I'd first appeared, only after a few minutes passed would become friendly and responsive.Though this cat and his sensible sister were the only 2 ,until becoming senior cats, were allowed out unsupervised as never roaming more than a house or two nor going on roads or driveways.

Had exactly same experiences with the 4 different Virginia o possums that I attempted to raise. They were never cuddly and would threaten to bite and did bite! Never tame still wild despite all the cuddly possum vids on KZbin.

Interesting. I wonder how those people tame Possums anyway. Speaking of tame, my former cottontail rabbit was pretty tame for the most part. She didn't become aggressive until 3 months old which is the sexual maturity stage. So much for rabbits being docile/friendly animals. Just because some individual animals are stubborn/hostile doesn't mean that the species is unsuitable to human interaction.

Wow how weird since there are so many videos on opossums on here that are so loving and are great pets. I have never heard of one biting, Ever! I have seen several grown females with babies get brought into homes and is a little scared at 1st but warms right up and became some what loving. Is someone being mean to them or man handling them etc.... I mean you said all 4 of them so I find that highly suspicious... sorry but I do. Do u have kids that are rough? I don't know it's too strange and unusual.

I enjoyed your take on domestication. Probably the most salient point you brought up is that for each species domestication looks different, and the fact that there are individual personalities (genetic or experiential) at play. As a cat person it kills me when people compare cats to dogs and attribute their differences to the fact that dogs have been domesticated longer. What? Cats are NOT dogs and dogs are NOT cats. They will never be domesticated in the same way (and we cat people wouldn't want that). Anyway, keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing your take; this issue deserves more thought and conversation. Good luck with your beautiful sand cat. Your response to it is very loving. I've found that cats respect respect...and given enough time, you can achieve a lot if you put their needs before your own. I've written a book on teaching your cat to walk on leash, for instance, and I find that they can all learn, but individual personalities dictate what type of walker they'll become.

House cats still get selectively bred because most people doing neuter cats until they turn violent or overly affectionate. In a hundred years, we’ll have mostly tame cats without having to neuter.

I think you should have stuck to raw meat(It's better for them anyways) since she's use to it and her system is made to handle raw meat. That's too bad you made her eat cat food. If she fed them the correct food, she’d have to feed 19 other exotic animals she owns their proper diet. It’s easier to just use dry food 😢😢😢 she says their low maintenance but their not this is horrible

Supposed domestic cats and even hybrid pedigrees can have varied degrees of wilder traits being markedly stronger in some cats. The most strongly reliable in domestic cat traits will feature in purebred breeds that haven't any hope surviving for long without the care of a good human home. If valuing stronger domestic traits when getting a pure bred oriental type breed or a hybrid breed you need to get them from breeder that has had an ongoing and current history of showing their cats and only breed from that lineage. If they can cope with the handling, grooming and cat show process they have heaps of domestic traits. Otherwise each cat may have had wilder genes that can emerge more in number and strength purely by random chance.Being a tad or a lot wilder in traits doesn't make them unhappier or less loveable, just more high needs in catering for them, keeping them safe, preventing boredom and possibly more be more damaging to property while younger.

You're a monster for keeping this sand cat in captivity, the main reason, no sand, no playmate no other species, so sad of you, shame on you woman! You don't even live in AZ or a place where there is desert so you can let the sandcat be in his/her natural habitat, this is utter sad behavior of you, I hope one day the kitty can escape and find a sandy place ! :( Kitty I love you and hugs !

Feed your sand cat raw food. Or leave it where it belongs. You need to be under investigation for what you're doing. This is horrible. The cat hisses at you because its constantly grumpy not being fed properly.
