The other week a friend of mine had a birthday party at the bar, but that day was also one of the first days I was experimenting with putting my hair up in a turban. I decided I'd go and not drink, unless I decided that I wanted to drink in which case I could just take the turban off. But I didn't. I had sweet potato fries, a coconut water, and a lot of great conversation with some people who, though drinking, were very interested in Sikhi and thanked me emphatically for coming, and did not pressure me to drink. So that was an altogether positive experience. If someone experiences more temptation and it's a struggle then avoiding that is for the best. For me alcohol was already something I could take or leave, and since getting into Sikhi my desire for it has mostly evaporated. For my own personal cultivation I find the best is not to force myself to do or not do anything, but to reach a level of consciousness in which everything I want simply happens to be exactly what God wants. The seedling analogy makes sense, some are more susceptible to diversion and have a greater need to avoid it while others won't experience temptation no matter who they're around. Jesus spent a lot of time with alcoholics, sex workers, etc, and Nanak also befriended the lowly; to be a spiritual person does not mean to disown or think you're better than those who use other means to get through the day than what might be the most pure or wholesome. But there's no sense leading ourselves astray simply out of convenience or familiarity.

A true Sikh is a personality who does't have to speak anything, people learn from him the way he walks, spiritually so high. Minimum Standard is to be like Bhai Gurdas Ji. Just be like Guru and decide what to do and what not to do.

Very true. Very honest and thoughtful answers. I am not Sikh. I am a lapsed Catholic. But religion has nothing to do with my feelings about bars-etc. I do not go to bars. I have never been to a bar in my life ( i am 37) and I believe in looking within myself to understand reasons. I think I feel this way because I would feel very uncomfortable or afraid in a bar. Nothing against people who patronize bars. But I just dont feel that I would benefit at all from it. Nothing truly good will come from it. Nothing worthwhile. And people I have known in the past have made me afraid of that scene and what it can do to anyone. All of us. If we allow ourselves to be influenced. I respect what you have stated and it makes sense for everybody. If only more people would open their minds.

"You're in the wrong environment." As Sikh's we're told to adopt the mind state of a monk whilst integrating into society. So I guess it's down to the individual and their self control.

Guru ji will really mess us up and destroy us if we tie a turban and drink alcohol or smoke/do drugs. The technology of the turban is such. I see people drink and do drugs and they get really sweaty and start taking off their clothes, Guru will make you remove your turban and that would be a shameful situation in public. I think that this is the main reason why a person shouldn't wear sikh bana whilst smoking/drinking etc..

I think if you believe in your faith and have strong conviction about it, then nothing can shake that. Therefore if you consider yourself a strong Sikh you can go to the bar and club because your higher sense is stronger then then surrounding corruption. Just as easily the dirt can touch and effect us, we need to remember its just dirt and through purity of water it can be washed away. Water being metaphor for prayer and meditation.

+Basics of Sikhi, if God is one, and if God is neither male or female, why is God mentioned multiple times and addressed and 'he'?
@r3b22ber3
@r3b22ber3 8 жыл бұрын
its because god and guru are referred to as the "husband" and anyone seeking the love and relationship with god is like the bride u may ask well why was god not referred to as the bride this just comes down to tradition and the dynamics of a relationship. A woman is usually broken from her home and moves into a new home and family(of her husband) therefore leaving something behind (in a sikhs case leaving the world behind for this relationship) this is what i take from the he reference it wouldnt make sense to make god a she if we are in fact the woman. also its quite deeper than that. a man plants a seed in a woman and she causes it to blossom into a NEW LIFE again its a great metaphor used by the gurus to explain the relationship between akaal purakh and ourselves. Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh

mm Am I wrong in saying this? In times in which superstition existed in India, people were judged and categorised based on their caste, views, opinions and beliefs, Guru Nanak raised the ideal of equality and kindness. I perceive Sikhism to be a religion of symbols and the hair symbolises equality. It is something everyone grows regardless of their caste, creed, religion etc etc. I understand that keeping hair is us letting ourselves be natural but do you really become unnatural if you change something in your appearances? Just food for thought. I want to see what you think.

@@okman6571this was at an event by the 3ho community, there was some dude who went to america and mixed sikhi with a bunch of other stuff and taught it to the impressionable americans at the time 1960's ish willing to feast on anything from the east. He kinda set himself up as a self made guru and yogi and there are huge communities in America and globaly who say "satnam" and have no idea of the origin. It used to make me mad, but hey, they are doing jap naam and that's more than nothing. I guess I just have to trust satgurus wisdom and hukkum that this was supposed to happen. its like kundalini 3ho kinda stuff. they will be chanting naam but they are also using crystal energy and chakras..
