I think it's a concerted effort to create overlap in support of both sports. I don't think world rugby is arrogant enough to believe they can supplant football in the states but their thinking might be that fans of one sport can become fans of both. I do agree that regarding the growth of rugby at the grassroots level is a different matter altogether. They need to invest in youth first but they need money to do that and money comes from fans. NFL is a highly specialised sport. Every player only needs to do a couple of things very well. But rugby 7s is totally different. Every player on the pitch must be quick, agile, jump high, tackle, have good ball handling skills, stamina and endurance. In a one on one test like straight line speed, the best NFL players win hands down. But straight line speed isn't good enough in rugby. You need to be agile, switch directions quickly, decelerate and accelerate instantaneously, and after that, make big tackles and lift up a teammate to catch high balls (or in lineouts in 15s), and run non-stop for the entire game. I would say that the 7s player would be a better all round athlete. It's just the nature of the sport. Both sports are just different.

The rugby players can do very well at combine tests but the huge problem is they don’t know the game. American kids grow up watching and learning the game, as they get older they specialise in positions and know the plays inside out because of years of repetition. By the time they finish college, they’ll have been playing for at least 10 years! Yes the rugby players can learn plays but what about when the play breaks down and they haven’t got the years of experience to fall back on. American football stars have been playing football all their lives and know the nuances and rules of the game. There may be a time when a football star can make the 1st 15 of a top rugby union, or league club. There may be a time when a rugby star can make a starting 11 on offense, or defense on a NFL club. Now, neither can. Rugby is the father of American football and the United States is still the two time defending Olympic gold medalists in full squad rugby. I believe American football wants to keep rugby down though, knowing it's a threat to their dominance in America. I rest my case.

In your dreams. You should search video interviews of every rugby player who has tried to play in the NFL what it's like? The NFL player is way faster and more athletic than anyone in rugby by a mile.

it’s cuz the sport requires 100% for 8 seconds. Little endurance or safety measures have to be taken so you can get big and fast as you can without worrying if you can make it past half

What bollocks! Testing pro/semi-pro rugby athletes vs HS kids who’ve hardly played American football, in drills at positions they’re not specialised in? Be aware that most of the athletes in the NFL Academy program haven’t played American football before & are still pretty raw in terms of their development & skill. There’s a reason why LZR got cut

@ 1) these aren’t ‘the greatest’ athletes in rugby. 7’s isn’t even as big of a sport as league, let alone rugby Union. 2) I didn’t comment on the comparison between these athletes, I said Bryan habana and Jason Robinson would destroy the combine. 3) Christian wade wasn’t even a good winger, LRZ was world class and is still just a kid. Bryan habana and Jason Robinson were the pinnacle of rugby athleticism. Now we’re onto players like Trae Williams, who are bigger and faster than even the likes of tyreek hill.

Rugby League have better athletes suited for NFL. Union too slow. Jordan Mailata didn’t even make the top league here in Australia called NRL and is now one of the top offensive linemen in the whole NFL. As for the kicking side of things former AFL players or people with Aussie rules experience in Australia via Pro Kick is taking over the NFL right now.
