Scanlan's VA, Sam Riegel, was diagnosed with Tonsil Cancer earlier this year. That final song was the last thing he recorded before going into surgery to begin his recovery, the night before it actually. It kinda serves also as a "in case shit goes wrong and it doesn't work" goodbye song. Thankfully as of now, he is cancer-free and on his path to recovery, even returning to the streams after months away.

No, Raishan is not in the pepperbox. It has to be the _killing_ blow. And she also had nothing to do with the Whispered One, she merely wanted to escape her curse... and yet, she couldn't. Because an Ashari once again became her undoing.
@caffeinedelusions
@caffeinedelusions 3 ай бұрын
It’s a bit of a retcon compared to the campaign, but it seems like the Whispered One is the one sponsoring the ritual Raishan was using, much like Delilah sought his sponsorship to turn her husband into a vampire. So the Whispered One isn’t TOTALLY uninvolved, but yeah, he’s not the primary concern in the Conclave arc.

@@caffeinedelusions Both the Whispered One and Raishan wanted their rituals done at a ziggurat because they are places of power. You can channel more magic there with the right preparations. They were originally made to commune with the gods (in a deeper and less ambiguous way than the Commune spell allows), at least in the animation, but the power tied to them can be repurposed.

Minor Spoilers for end of campaign (minor as I'm being a little vague) There is a dracolich that shows up in the final fight (in the dungeon crawl portion of getting to the top of entropis). I assume that because raishan is kinda linked to the whispered one thematically, it might end up being her. In dnd, dracoliches don't die (like normal liches), but they don't regenerate their body, they go into a new lizard-type form, mostly another dragon's corpse. That means the whispered one could totally get raishan a new body and have her there. It also means we can get devossa and raishan fight (using that name to not spoil)

When they started S2, they knew they had a S3 so they paced it accordingly. Amazon didn't greenlight S4 until after C3 ep 8 aired so they were forced to rush some things in case C3ep12 was the last one. They wanted to give a happy ending that tied up the Chroma Conclave. The group did break up for about 1 year in game spurned by Scanlan leaving with his daughter. You can check out "Bard's Lament" ep 85 to see the split up but I warn you, it is heartbreaking.

Sam Riegel is a star. He knocked that out of the park. Blew my mind and showed how serious of an actor he can be. I look forward to them seeing A Bard's Lament when they do their table to screen. They are going to be shocked when they see how different the circumstances of the end of this "Arc" were in the campaign. I was surprised when I first watched S3, but in retrospect I think the reason it's so different is because Pike was actually involved in keeping Scanlan in a healthier mindset. Shame that Pike had a "Blindspot" for Scanlan during the campaigns original run though. 😂

2:38 In addition to being an ancient dragon, Raishan is also a powerful spellcaster. D&D characters will recognize Meteor Swarm from the end of the last episode, which is a 9th-level spell (the highest in the game). The spell on Vax could be Hold Person, and later she uses something that looks like a Wall of Force. So at this point she has all the physical might of Thordak, the magic of a powerful spellcaster, AND the ability to resist or ignore more physical damage since she's inhabiting a dead body (which is held together by magic, not biology). Poetically, Keyleth defeats her by out-thinking her.
@suntiger745
@suntiger745 3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure she's as strong, physically, as Thordak was. The body is still a bit mangled. I agree that the dracolich body is physically stronger (and definitely tougher) than Raishan was in her original body, but not quite up to Thordak's level when he was alive. That's a bit nitpicky though. She's still a dracolich which is major bad news. :) Spot on for the rest of it.
@undeathghost5627
@undeathghost5627 3 ай бұрын
All of this is true. Though I must say it's a shame that the original Poetic nature of Raishans demise couldn't be easily captured on screen. Keyleth landing Feeblemind on Raishan when she ran out of Legendary Resistances is one of the best moments in all of Critical Role imo. So much anger and hatred from Keyleth to Raishan. So much petty superiority over her abilities from Raishan to Keyleth. All of it culminating in Keyleth literally robbing Raishan of her Intelligence and turning her into a rabid, helpless beast in the weakest of the 4 dragons bodies is just the perfect end for Keyleths Rage arc. Also sad the Grog counselling Keyleth scene didn't make it for the same reason. Even Marisha said "Is Grog really teaching me right now? It's that bad?"

To answer your questions: Yes Mighty Nein and VM are in the same universe, but if I remember correctly MN takes place some years after VM final "boss battle". If you want to react to something related to MN there is "Your turn to roll", an opening sang by Ashley Johnson (Pike) and Laura Bailey (Vex). I honestly didn’t think they were gonna bring Percy back! I thought that the most they could do was somehow destroy Orthax and have Percy’s soul released so he could move on to the afterlife. Because normally I’m not in favor of bringing dead characters back to life because then it really lessens the stakes for the characters, but this was done in such a brilliant and beautiful way that I was completely onboard the whole time. Especially since it seems like Vax likely traded in all but a few years left in his lifespan for Percy’s resurrection.

This was the one thing that Lance Reddick wasn't able to record before his death. His widow asked them to have LeVar Burton record these lines after Lance passed away. Matt Mercer was at the Picard season 3 premiere where Lance and LeVar met for the first time. And LeVar's daughter Mica has done several projects with Critical Role, including hosting the watch-along for their first season, guesting for a couple episodes as a character in the Mighty Nein, and co-hosting one of their pandemic projects, Critter Hug. For the table to screen moments, obviously the tub is a must see (Travis' reaction alone is worth it). The guy on the left side of the table at the top, by Liam, is Patrick Rothfuss, author of several fantasy novels. He was there as a guest player. Sadly that character didn't show up in the series. You also have to see the death of Raishan. Marisha's reaction is infamous. 😁

Yes, M9 and VM are in the same universe, but M9 is at a different time in the world. I can't think of anything specific that would prep you both for M9, except maybe a sneak peek of it. They have a 2-3 minute first look at the animation : kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6XMmoWlht5ji5Y that is actually pre-campaign, stuff that would've happened in what ttrpg'ers call Session Zero, where you are getting everyone or just a few players set up in the world, before the whole set of players comes together, to establish your characters and maybe build them, change them if you need to (different class or species/lineage/ancestry. The cast of CR has said that M9 will be different than how they played it at the table and I am looking forward to how they changed it, what parts are the same. If you ever do get into watching the actual play of any of CR's campaigns, if there is only one you would be willing to watch, do campaign 2. As much as I love VM and campaign 1, campaign 2 and M9 are my favorites (and contains some of my favorite characters, be they players' characters or NPCs!) Until then, enjoy the downtime, prepare yourselves for more rollercoasters of fun, and rewatch all of TLoVM as many times as you'd feel comfy doing, because if you're like me, one run-through is not enough (nor is 10, 20,...50...any number! ahahahaha)

They weren't sure they would get a 4th season, so they wanted to leave off on a good note in case this was the series finale instead of just the season. I would bet that the final cult scene was recorded, but only added in once they confirmed a season 4. They had to rush things a bit to make sure they dealt with all the threats, as well as Percy and Scanlan. So there were major changes from the campaign. For example, there was a split like we see at the end of the season, but it was a bit more contentious. And the death of Ripley was nothing like what we see (except for the actual killing blow). The Mighty Nein is their second campaign. Same actors, different characters. It's a very different vibe from Vox Machina. Their first campaign was very standard high fantasy. Think Lord of the Rings. Lots of high fantasy tropes, archetypal characters, basic good vs evil stories. Their second campaign, they took a lot more risks. Think Game of Thrones. Political intrigue, inter-party tension and mistrust. They wanted to make it completely standalone, so that new viewers could watch without having to see the first campaign. If you look at a map of Exandria, Vox Machina takes place on the continent of Tal'Dorei. Mighty Nein takes place on the continent of Wildemount. If Tal'Dorei is North America, Wildemount is Eurasia. (No comparison other than positioning.) Mighty Nein is also 25 years after Vox Machina's ending. They do have a few references to Vox Machina in the campaign, but aside from Easter Eggs, there are only 2 major ones, which you've already seen, so you're all set.

M9 still takes place on Exandria but on a different continent than most of VM, and 20 years in the future. After Campaign 1 ended, some of the players wanted to play VM's descendants, relatives, etc but Matt disallowed it and made a conscious effort to keep C1 and C2 as separate as possible. I remember there was tons of speculation about who was playing what, etc. *If* you really want something to scratch that Critter itch after Table to Screen and before M9/LOVM S4, I recommend their mini-campaign, EXU:Calamity. It's a prequel that takes place 1000 years before C1 so spoilers for M9/LOVM should be a minimum. It's 19 hours long, so while it's by no means short, it's definitely more manageable than 500+ hours for any of the main CR campaigns.

the hilarity of Keyleth barfing in every season continues... first in the opening episode, then when she's stoned in the feywild, now this... makes you wonder what the next season has in store for her. a little context for Percy's resurrection... in DnD, there's a spell that can do that.. either the cleric in your party or a cleric you find in the world in which the game takes place, is high enough leverl to be able to cast that spell.. it has an expensive material cost, but otherwise is a regular spell like any other. Matthew Mercer, in his campaign, has a houserule that complicates matter a little.. he asks the party members (all of whom are seasoned actors so he knows they will not disappoint), to add something to the ritual, usually up to 3 people... they will either say their piece and/or offer an item or other piece of "something" that has a connection between their character and that of the deceased they are trying to bring back... if they make a compelling argument and roll high enough on their die, this helps the casting of the resurrection spell. The writers of the show have incorporated that dynamic into the scene, having Vax dive in searching for the soul, Pike perform the ritual and Vex baring her soul to Percy.... all these tings combined together made the resurrection possible.

It was the rescue of Percy that changed the pacing the most - he was brought back the very next episode after Ripley killed him (Ripley died the same episode). The battle against Thordak was less than a full episode - they were very well prepared. They went after Raishan at the end of the Thordak dying ep, and then the next episode was her smacking them down and escaping. It would be a couple more episodes before they could take her out (Matt had hoped to make her a recurring villain for a future campaign, but Keyleth was able to track her). I do realize that I'm in an extreme minority, but Percy is my least favorite and it's not close (at least, not after Scanlan got some character growth). They've softened Percy a lot here - made him a much better person than he ever was on screen, to the point where Vax calling him an "aloof, indignant arsehole" almost didn't make sense.

Without spoilers. Vox Machina and Mighty Nien are in the same world but are different stories (campaigns) within that world. Technically, we have gotten references and nods to The Mighty Nien campaign in this show. I will not clarify what they were because itll be more fun for you to find out in The Mighty Nien story. To answer Dee's question and to reassure Meesh, there isn't anything out there to prepare for Mighty Nein. It is definitely set in the same universe. But I will say is the Mighty Nein has more magical capabilities at least in terms of the game mechanics. Vox Machina did actually not have a lot. They had a Cleric (when she was available), a Druid and a Bard. The ranger has some magic but nothing really great. A bard has a more limited selection of spells although they are among the 'full' spellcasters and Druids are mostly within the realm of movement control magics and some limited damage though also being full casters. It might seem like a lot of magic but it really isn't in 2014 D&D. Especially not in comparison to what Mighty Nein will bring to the table.

That "blue fire" is actually necrotic, due to her becoming a dracolich. "Never let your guard down around your enemy." Should have followed your own advice, Raishan. Keyleth legit beat you at your own game. She outwitted… or rather, she _deceived the Deceiver,_ got her to lower her guard, and ensured she couldn’t escape her fate. She let herself get “killed” on purpose, baiting her into incinerating her old corpse, all so she could take those ashes, absorb the disease from them, and bring it right back to its intended carrier. Brilliant move.

not quite a dracolich as there is no phylactery, but some sort of undead/skeletal dragon. Regardless its is definitely some sort of necrotic breath weapon. I think they were trying to portay it as "spectral" or something but it just ended up reading as blue flame. Though I suppose you could say that Raishan's body functioned as a sort of phylactery. Either way dracolich's are huge fun.

Also matt was fully trying to keep Raishan alive in campaign. He had long term plan for this villain. Then Keyleth dropped her 8th level spell feeblemind on her and didn't allow her to use any magic including the ones that would help her scape. So she died fast. In D&D dices tell the story and that bad role for Raishan had massive impact on the story.

for a dnd movie recommendation you can watch the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie! its not Critical Role made but its just as fun! reminder that Critical Role collabs with the Dungeons and Dragons company (aka WOTC Wizards of the Coast) but neither company owns the other. Critical Role’s planet of Exandria is Critical Role creator owned ONLY but the Setting of Forgotten Realms for the dnd movie belongs to WOTC. in Dungeon and Dragons you can create your own world (like how Matt Mercer made Exandria and all its Continents) or use a pre-made world like the Forgotten Realms’ Planet of Toril or the Dragonlance Planet of Krynn as settings.

All three of the Critical Role campaigns take place in the world of Exandria but on different continents. VM is in Dal'Dorei, Mighty Nien is in Wildmount, with campaign 3 in Marquet. So M9 has different locations within different countries, with different politics and cultures than Tal'Dorei. IMHO the Mighty Nien campaign is the best of the three. The M9 characters aren't your stereotypical D&D characters and the players are a bit more experienced and seasoned. Add that Matt Mercer throws some very intriguing plots and situations that really tests the groups bonds. This makes for more interesting events and character interactions. So I am really, really very much looking forward to seeing the M9 animated show.

Apparently, they're starting the show slightly before the point the game started airing, so the game fans don't know what's going to happen beyond what the players mentioned at the table. But it takes place about 20 years later on the same world, Exandria, only on the continent to the east, Wildemount. Interestingly, it's the continent that Anna Ripley and the Briarwoods are from.

YES! The Mighty Nein and Vox Machina take place in the same universe. Specifically, it starts on a different continent so there won't be a lot of crossover at the beginning. Some of the things we've seen in Vox Machina are foreshadowing for that. I won't spoil what, but it's so cool! 🙂 I totally respect that you don't want to know anything going into Mighty Nein, but if you change your mind, there is a quick 3:00 video they did for introducing the characters for that campaign. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4bGf6Rur8lpe6ssi=-dhLTh49Q-TM7nEF) Link provided if your willpower runs out. They are just the basic facts of everyone and don't spoil any plot items. (Note: The rest of the videos in that series WILL spoil plot points, so I wouldn't recommend watching those yet, but the linked one is just characters.) It's a little jarring back to back but i still think s3 is my favourite to watch bc the standalone eps are such bangers?? The campaigns are all Very Slow Burn compared to Most shows, (lvm included), i Deeply respect the work that went into condencing all that story into very short eps tbh I Prefer the slow burn but i understand why that's not possible ya kno? Im curious if mighty nein will feel more consice since the story is originally more focused (imo). Ig it depends on how many seasons we get?

Interesting that I've seen pretty much everyone agree that the Mighty Nein is the more scattered, sandbox style story? And that there will need to be major changes to get it to work for a show, which seems to have proven true since the crew has used the terms "totally new story" and "complete departure" from canon when they talk about how different it is... I'm not thrilled with season 3, so a bit worrying that Mighty Nein is going to be taking even more risks on trying to make a story better than the original
