When will companies learn that the risk of having an inconvenience does not outweigh the loss of productive workers
@rexfrost71612 күн бұрын
They won't, that's why companies now suck ass

When you can get every single person in management to learn about events like this you will be one step closer to it happening. Millions of small and large businesses have gone under because of the same mistakes but unless you were involved with them you probably don't know the details of what happened and without that information even if an idiot knows it failed elsewhere they will have the excuse to justify why it won't happen this time.

I knew someone who ran the operation of a small business and had over 2 months of PTO saved up when the company implemented a "No carry-over" policy. HR would call in October and say "You know about no-carry over, right?" They would reply "Oh! OK. I'll let my boss know that I'll take the rest of the year off. Thank you!" and the HR rep would do the math and freak out a bit. Boss would be called, discussions had, approvals received and HR would call back saying "OK... we will let you carry it over ONE MORE YEAR, but no more after that." Yeah... they had that discussion every year for 3 more years.

You do a policy change like this after the beginning of the year. That way the person has a whole year to use it up. Not at the end of the year. Doing a policy change like this at the end of the year is suicide
@PaulCDehlinger13 күн бұрын
On top of that wouldn’t it have made more sense to lower the max carryover from 45 to like 20 or something so everyone doesn’t feel they have to use absolutely all their PTO.

There is a reason why businesses do most of their layoffs at the end of the year. Especially if those companies are publicly traded. But the company in question, may have been looking at getting bought out so they needed to shed the employee liability to a perspective new buyer(s). And a new buyout price might be dependent on performance, value, liabilities, and depreciation throughout the whole year.

@@PaulCDehlinger Or just do 5 year plan and reduce number by 5 each year, assuming that the threat they saw isn't too large

A company of a relative was just bought out and they told them the amount of days given but never told them they couldn't carry them over. Since it is a new year he lost 10 days, needless to say. this year he will be taking all the time allowed. The business screwed all their employees and they will get their payback one way or another.

Honestly if you dont let them carry them over they should be paid out. They were part of the compensation

My husbands work has a roll over policy I think. He has over 111 hours worth of PTO saved up. It's not because he doesn't want to use the time, it's because he kinda _can't_ use it. He's the only one that does the consistent graveyard shifts and no one else wants to take that shift, like at ALL. And they don't do PTO payout which I think is bullshit.

where I work, at 10 years you get 208 hours of PTO and 24 hours of float / sick days. At one time you could carry over the full 208 and get another 208 by the end of the year. Several people were from Laos so they would save that up, and go home for the full 416 hours which is 52 days of vacation. well they changed it so you could not carry over more then 208 then changed it to you can't go over 208... So I just take off every other Friday, if I am close to 208, or just take a Thur, Fri, Mon every so often.

Many years ago, my friend saved enough vacation days to be off for a full year. He took that year off. I wonder if the company changed their rules?

I cant imagine being so utterly incompetent, that you don't realise that if they can't keep it, they'll use it? That's literally basic human behaviour.

see in australia they cannot do this. by law your company is required to provide a minimum 2 weeks of leave/vacation per year. if you dont use it. it rolles over. they cannot force you to take leave and have to pay you out that time once you leave the company.
@TheAdarkerglow11 күн бұрын
I think a cap of 45 days is high enough. It's rare someone wants to take more than two weeks, rarer still that someone who'd take more than 2 weeks would save up more than a month. What people with 45 days of vacation saved up are probably considering is an emergency, not being a burden to the company, their coworkers, or their family. Let them keep their Vacation Days.

Either inexperience, stupid or incompetent. Liability is already in the first day the policy was enacted. Company deserves to go down. Ignorant or stupid management

What is the problem now ? In my country something like this is regulated by law. Vacation days of the last year can only be used until day X in the current year or you loose them entirely. That works for everyone
@michaellischio761712 күн бұрын
Sure, if you know that going in it is not a problem. But if you have 45 days banked and you just got another 30, it’s going to be hard to use 75 days in a year
@AlejandroMonteagudo12 күн бұрын
Same here. The problem is the change out of the blue and having to scramble. I can obly carry over 1 week, but I knew from the start and planned acordingly
