Can't Keep Up? Sportster Iron 883 Review, Ride, Commute, Freeway Cruising, Harley Davidson XL883N
Some people love it, others hate it! Today we're taking the Harley Iron 883 Sportster for a spin. Instead of my traditional ride and review, I'm taking the bike on my daily commute to see how she handles at freeway speeds and determine what it's really made of. Can the meager Sportster 883 keep up on the freeway, or will it get left in the dust!? This is a 2013 stock Sportster Iron 883 xl883n.
Gear I Use:
Lapel Mic w/GoPro Hero5 Connection (everything you need for audio setup): amzn.to/2Wzw6W1
Simpson Bandit Ghost Helmet: amzn.to/2Go1RLI
GoPro Hero 4: amzn.to/2t38USf
Fox Gloves: amzn.to/2D30OOj
harley davidson iron 883 test ride, review, impressions, is the sportster 883 good for cruising, can the sportster 883 keep up on the freeway, is the iron 883 good for higher speeds, is the sportster 883 a good first motorcycle, likes and dislikes iron 883, complaints iron 883, in depth review iron 883, sportster, 1200 vs 883

I have never ridden an 883 but I have a 1200 custom that I bobbed out with 18" apes. The wind hitting my chest is intense at 90 plus. The curves are sketchy as hell but I love that bike. I ride the hell out of it. I also have an 05 electraglide (unofficial Streetglide) and that's my highway bike. I treat them both equally. I ride one for awhile and then ride the other for awhile. To answer your question; if it's all I had, hell yeah!

Only morons that overpaid for big Harley's try to put guys down by saying the Sporty is a chicks bike. The fact is that Sporty's are the best bikes Harley makes. If it wasn't for the Sportster line, HD would be out of business.

I put 40,000 miles on my 81 Yamaha XS400SG in four years. Commutes to work and school, mountain rides, local shopping trips, long day fun rides, multiple day trips with a sleeping bag strapped to the back of the seat. I think people who think an 883 is too small don't have perspective.

Love my 2005 XL883 Sporty standard with mid-controls. It's perfect for the mountain twisties and the country roads. It can handle the interstate alright but I hate the interstate on any bike, so it's a moot point for me. It's a SPORTster, after all. If I wanted a bigger bike, I would get an EVO 80 (1340cc) Softail, but I don't have the need. I'm happy with what I want. All of my mods are internal for reliability and longevity. You gave a good review here.

My buddy has an 883 Iron and it it cruises next to my Dyna at 80-90 mph no problem. I had an 883 standard that i used to tour on, pulling a trailer behind it and it had no problem going through the mountains at 70+ as long as I let it breathe. You have to downshift these engines and let them rev. If you are coming off a big twin with the low end torque and never having to shift, of course they feel weak. But an 883 WILL GO if you let it rev and use your gears.

If you look back to 1970-80 the Sportster was extremely poplar and made into some of the best choppers and bobbers on the road. Cheap and easy to work on. Stroking them was popular and putting Shovel or Pan heads on a Sportster lower was popular for a while. The Sportster is a phenominal bike.

Well I love my sporty. Its what a Harley is supposed to be, sounds fantastic and still has that Harley feel. It isn''t a Honda with a Harley logo. I solved my main issue with the bike "cruising speed". When you go over 70mph it turns too many RPM. I put a 31T pulley on the front and now it cruises great in traffic. Cost of the upgrade was $$350 with labor included. You won't be popping wheelies but there was plenty torque to spare to give this bike overdrive. Some people even bump up to 32 teeth on the pulley which gives you 10 MPH more on the freeway at 70.

Yeah, I'm going to pile on with the pro Sportster crowd. Being of a certain age, I remember when Harley made essentially two bikes: The Harley 74 was the big bike. 74 means 74 cubic inches, or 1200CCs. It was a bagger, with 3 main customers--police and military, Ma and Pa Kettle as a retirement touring vehicle, and young rebels. The young guys chopped the bikes to take weight off and made some brilliant looking designs in the '60s and '70s. Stuff of legend. The other Harley was the Sportster 900 (883). Came from the factory already stripped down. Just a big engine with a bare bones frame around it. Totally cool. Today's Sportsters have gained weight, added engine isolation mounts, etc., but they are still awesome bikes in their own right. I had a '97 1200 which I tricked out a little with beefed up suspension and a few other goodies. No rubber mounts. So other than rattling my teeth after 70 or 80 miles, it did everything. Commute, California back roads, highway. All good. Sportsters rule! In the interest of full disclosure, I had mostly Triumphs as a kid, and now ride a Milwaukee 8-driven Low Rider.

Just got an Iron 1200 after years of Metric bike ownership, everything from cruisers to sport bikes to adventure bikes. Bikes with anywhere from 50 to 150+ HP. All bikes are awesome which is why you need at least three or four. In all seriousness power is a trip but 99% of your rides will be within or close to legal speed limits. My two favorite bikes of the dozen I've owned over the years my Iron 1200 and my 2017 Honda CB500X. BTW, I am 6'2" and a bit north of 250lbs.

I may be in the minority here, but I find the Iron 883 to be HD's best looking stock bike (though I admit to digging their redesigned softail line, especially the new Fat Boy). I think the 883 in matte black looks even better than the 48. I would happily tool around on this bike all day long around town with some light freeway time. It also has the added benefit of sounding amazing (with aftermarkets this thing sounds like a monster!). While not a "performance machine" (not trying to be), it has plenty of oomph for the average rider, and even comes in at a pretty decent price-point for a HD. I have ridden PLENTY of bikes smaller than the 883 in the past that were great commuters and really fun to boot, and the 883 is great in keeping with that premise.

If you think the Sporty vibrates try an old EVO. I have a 93 Heritage and at 70mph it really vibrates but that it is the character of the old bikes. I’ve had a 93 and 94 Sportster and they were good bikes and I really enjoyed them. Been looking for one for a while now since I’m in my seventies and the Heritage is a lot heavier than a Sporty and a lot easier to maneuver around.

I love it, it does start to feel like your pushing the motor when you get over 80mph, but I;m not sure I need to go over 80mph right? It has forward controls and will cruise 200 miles on one tank of gas. Its not a bad highway bike in my opinion. Great for all day trips or overnights it has a limited range as far as comfort... would I want to take it across 5 states? No. No, I wouldn't. Could you? Yes, yes you could.

I love my Harley 2003 883 Hugger 100thAnniversaryEdition. I'm 57 years old 6'1tall. I couldn't pass up buying this bike so I bought it in Oct 2020 with only 1700 miles on it. Perfect condition with the exception of the tires.Though original and looked brand new they needed replacement. I've already put almost 1200 miles driving locally. The last time I owned a moto was 32 years ago.I feel like a kid again. Old school Harley dudes might shrug ,but my friends with bigger Harleys understand freedom regardless of the bike one rides. As far as looks its fucking cool.So i have a chance to go to the Ozarks but I am concerned about keeping up with the bigger bikes so I'm waiting to see if there are any people with 883 0r 1200(same really) who would like to go.Anyway, these little basterds are strong ,reliable and a blast to ride, with most getting over 100,000 miles before service. So you all enjoy the ride regardless of your ride!

It's doable to ride on the freeway, but it's not comfortable or safe splitting lanes. There's just not enough power, the suspension is too tight, and is maxed out at 70-80. Longer commutes around 50-60mins and expect to have numb feet and hands. I'd definitely recommend a larger bike.

You need to take what you hear about the 883 with a grain of salt. There are too many people who just repeat what they hear instead of actually knowing anything. I had a 2006 883 that I put Road King shocks on the back, detachable windshield, detachable saddlebags, forward controls, Mustang touring seat, and slightly taller handlebars. If that wasn't enough I put a trailer hitch on it and pulled a small trailer behind it to carry my luggage. I toured 23 states with that motorcycle and did a stretch from New Orleans to Fort Lauderdale in one day. I was able to keep up with traffic the whole time even on the mountain grades the 883 had no trouble with this. I took pictures on the trip pictures of my rig. Don't let anyone tell you that in 883 is too small for anything. They're obviously too young to remember when most bikes in existence were under 1000 cc's and people didn't ride them any less than they do now. As a matter of fact they probably rode them more. For reference I'm 6 ft tall and while the "forward" controls of a Sportster did not put my feet very far forward they put my legs at a comfortable chair-like position.

I would definitely put the 883 on the list for good beginner/entry level bikes. It's a bit heavier than your beginner sport bikes, but it's very narrow and sits pretty low. Plus, it has enough power to keep you entertained for a while. You wont necessarily outgrow it right off the bat.

P.S. Most say sportaters are gutless. Those that say it usually weigh in at 250lbs. or better. Sportsters (883 or any bike that is below a 1500cc.) isn't for them. The bigger you are the more bike you need. Weight has a dramatic effect on motorcycles.

Sportsters are the coolest bikes on Earth but probably the last one I would buy cuz you're spending thousands of dollars for a satin black would be the 883 Iron which is an awesome looking bike but I think people don't understand that it is just a paint job! I bought a much cooler looking 1989 Sportster custom for a couple thousand dollars I'm about to buy a 96 Sportster 1200 S which were dried circles around in 883 Iron for not much more than that don't get hung up on a paint job and Sportsters rule!

Heck yeah! State 48! It really comes down to personal preference. Tons of people pull off freeway commutes on the iron 883 (and even smaller bikes). Personally, I'd like to have something a bit bigger if I knew that would be the majority of my riding. But you also want to consider experience and comfort level. As a first bike, the 883 offers a lot because it's so light and nimble, but still has enough power to take you at freeway speeds.
