Norwegian goverment put a tax that wwere supposed to go to the salmon companies 2 years ago. It has backfired and now we the people pay that tax. The salmon families keep getting richer.

Can’t believe that after 2 years they don’t take away this tax. As it ended up being us. The people paying for it.

That's how taxes work on pretty much anything, the companies will pass on most of the cost onto the consumers. But, governments do need to get tax money somehow, and Value Added Taxes (VAT) are considered the most efficient. I'm not saying a tax on salmon farmers is good or bad, I'm not Norwegian and don't know the reasoning.

Agree, but there needs to be active improvements. Salmon when farmed has grey meat, and these companies are using chemical in the feed to make the flesh orange, not r&d to improve the feed. Havent bought farmed salmon since i found out about this many years ago.

That nordlaks shipfarm and that last enclosed farm seem the way to go. Now the question is how fast and expensive it would be to close down all others and make more of those.
@Djamonja

Another way they can do it is on land in large pools/tanks, but it is more expensive because you have to pump a lot of water around (there are companies actually doing this).

@@Djamonja I saw something like that where people in Singapour were doing this with shrimps. Which was when i thought to myself that should be done with salmon here. Maybe 1-2 months ago also on DW.

@@kinngrimm Yea, the shrimp farming I have seen in Hawaii. It's easier because you don't have to pump as much water and the pools are smaller. It can definitely work with Salmon, but I'm not sure how much more expensive it is compared to the other farming methods.

@@aryaman05 Expensive is when they have to sell their farmed salmon for twice the cost of the salmon sold by regular salmon farms. No salmon farming company is make hundreds of millions in profit, the whole industry might be, but that's hundreds of companies all over the world.

"Strict" regulations according to a powerful industry and associate government comfortably profiting from fish farming does not amount to coherent regulations, less so to a sustainable practice. Fish farmers in Norway may monitor a bunch of physical parameters to argue that they ensure the health of the fish, but that only means a minimum health requirement to comply with some modern human standard. What about the life quality of the fish? How do they measure it? If at all, how much do they actually care about it? In reality, all that technology and (severely biased) research supporting Norway's fish farming is targeted towards justifying and perpetuating a cruel and unessential practice that has made them big profits. If they truly cared about environment and welfare, they would instead massively shift to alternatives (like seaweed), reduce the size of the fishing industry and invest in making people conscious about the flaws of fisheries so they change their consumption habits. Maybe eating a salmon should be a once-a-year thing or even less.. Of course this won't happen anywhere soon because what really matters here is profit, and Norwegians are just too scared to risk their lifestyle, privileges and fortunes.

is farmed or farm raised salmon something people want? is the implication that it should be banned? controlled more? do we 'need' this salmon or can we do without it? do we want this salmon on the market? or not? is the market better off without this farmed salmon or do the methods just need to be adhered to and they are not? the underlying problem seems so ethereal , it sounds like an amazing idea to farm salmon so the problems that are emerging start to seem complicated

but if farm raised salmon is a solution for people who don't mind that type of cultivation, domesticated fish just like cows etc, that should be their choice, even if that means preserving wild salmon populations for them
