Sounds like Soviet bloc-nationalism of client states. Texas only was able to become independent because of US assistance; and they joined the US to keep Mexico from taking it BACK. But they did NOT join the Union by national compact. NONE of the states did; that would destroy their independence. They did it mainly to PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENSE: i.e. an international alliance. The rest was just OTHER voluntary international agreements.

The economic argument falls apart when you consider the number of companies that would pack up and leave for the United States. And that's not even including all the things run by the federal government that would shut down, like NASA. So much of the economy south of Houston is tied up in NASA and NASA contractors that the whole area would plummet into a Depression. The economic issue is *so much more complicated* than just the amount of tax money flowing to and from the state.
@dashiellgillingham45792 жыл бұрын
Those issues are all solvable in the theoretical case where the USA is willing to let Texas leave. Although, I admit, a federal government willing to just let Texas go would also probably have a hard time talking itself into the kind of economic interventionism such measures would involve.

It also depends on whether the secessions cascade. Remember in the beginning of the Confederacy was made up of South Carolina. And that's it. With them suddenly going through with articles of secession the other states around them started to do so. And if the reasons Texas is trying to leave the Union are shared by other states you could have a wave of states one after the other trying to leave. Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma might decide that their interests are better served by joining the Texas Republic than with the USA. (Especially with the way the US is going) and this could lead to the Western Seaboard not wanting to be apart and leaving. And we all know the lower Southern States would want to leave. If bad enough for Texas to actually take a serious stab at leaving, other states wouldn't be worried about trading with them. Many would probably be thinking of how they can leave to.

The thing about the old Republic of Texas is that it was in major debt, had political struggles such as Sam Houston pushing for annexation and the others not wanting to, and overarching nationalism. It would have died if the U.S. didn't let it join.

The Supreme Court ruled that states can’t unilaterally secede and that the action is unconstitutional. They can’t secede with the act of the state. Secession could be reached by a revolution, or a possible consent of the states. But the Supreme Court says that it’s unconstitutional

If Texas secedes the Supreme Court’s opinions will be moot. The Texas Constitution and the United States Constitution both include provision for altering or abolishing any government that is destructive of the people’s rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The FBI just raided the house of a political rival of the man in the Oval Office. That is how dire things are.
@ardeluc22222 жыл бұрын
However in the event of a convention of 2/3 of the states proposing an amendment and then 3/4 of the states ratifying it (as detailed in article 5 of the US constitution) this could just entirely bypass the federal government, but the poop would have to really hit the fan before that happened.

It's only an issue if you recognize the law in question. And I submit as evidence.....Sanctuary Cities.....lol Yes the left's own loop hole exploiting trick I now everyone's get out of jail free card and should Texas decide to leave we will just say..."Sorry we don't recognize your authority" and exit stage left. There won't be war because in the current environment of "stolen election" Texas will not stand alone. If the numbers are to be believed the Texas side will likely outnumber the non-Texas side by a massive margin. Will it happen? Not likely. But a year ago nobody thought you could steal an election either.

Well the US Constitution doesn't address the issue of secession so per the 10th Amendment. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

a lot of people say that texas can financially support itself if it secedes. obviously if you take current numbers where dozens of AMERICAN companies are currently based in Texas, this would be true. but wouldn't TONS of companies leave Texas if it becomes its own country which also could bring heavy tariffs and maybe a border along the state? wouldn't thousands if not millions of people move out to stay in the union? like yeah if Texas secedes and the US is just like "eh whatever its their choice", it would be fine. I don't think it would go like this, I think the US would be bitter about the secession and try to economically punish Texas. Just some thought.
