Can the Subaltern Speak? : An Analysis

Spivak is considered as an unsettling voice in the genre of literary theories especially post colonial studies. In her essay Can the Subaltern Speaks? she uses deconstruction to analyse how truth is constructed. She also writes against the Epistemic Violence done by the discourses of knowledge. Spivak concludes by saying that it's impossible to reclaim and rewrite history in the western framework as they construct truth, and therefore the subalterns cannot speak

In the text, Spivak intones that the ‘real reason’ for the suicide was to avoid the grim responsibility of her work as a radical revolutionary. That’s how the text describes it. However, reading between Spivak’s lines, it might be fair to point out that in this case Spivak herself may be guilty of applying her own voice to this ‘subaltern’ woman. To this day I wonder if she would read what I just wrote as a cynical rebuttal or as a sincere thought developed on the precise notion she set out to describe in this fabulous and challenging text.
