Recessions are part of the economic cycle, all you can do is make sure you're prepared and plan accordingly. I graduated into a recession (2009). My 1st job after college was aerial acrobat on cruise ships. Today I'm a VP at a global company, own 3 rental properties, invest in stocks and biz, built my own business, and have my net worth increase by $500k in the last 4 years.

Everyone talks about the UK avoiding recession as though it's some measure of success, but this financial crisis we're in now, is *WAY* worse than the actual recession of 2008. I'm not an expert on finance but it seems clear to me there's a lot more to a country's success than whether or not it is in recession.

Yep. I moved to London in 2010, 2 years deep into the 2008 recession, and finding a job was easy, the cost of living was lower and the rooms were also cheaper and easy to get. I think my first room in a flatshare in Ealing Broadway was less than 450£ per month bills included. I wouldn't dare to live in London now, closed businesses post covid, high inflation/cost of living, rents out of control, energy crazy high, wages barely raised, ehmmmm no thanks.

As an American, I knew that talks of a recession on our end was overblown… Currently we could only be in a recession if we accepted it as so which would cause mass panic and market turmoil, in reality artificial inflation is the only hurdle the economy faces which is only manageable due to household spending almost not changing… Hence the non existent recession that’s been spouted as “imminent” since January 2023… The UK faces the same exact problem, with the exception that they must import more because they produce less which puts them on a likelier outcome of reaching a proper recession.

You have 30% of the population renting with no rent caps and rent has been spiralling out of control for ages. In my area the average rent on a room. Has gone up by nearly a 100 pounds in a year. You need to stop landlords from over charging. Renters have seen a near 30% increase in certain parts of the UK in the last 2 years. With the average being around 10%. Renters are experiencing the rate of inflation at nearly double. 48% of the average renter's income is being used on rent. Anything above 25 to 30% is said to have serious long term phycological impact. Causing depression and long term issues. Effectively passing on the cost to the NHS, which have to deal with these issues and the police. Its because of the high cost of rent people struggle to be active members of the economy.

Inflation was much higher after joining the Eurooean Community and other things. It was 17%. After relying on cheap food from New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, were hit by high European prices. 80% of the Community budget was spent on the Common Agricultural Policy supporting inefficient farmers. Not by subsidy but by maintaining high commodity prices. Inflation went higher. Union action pushed a price wage spiral until the Labour government were forced to go to the IMF for a loan in '76. Recent policy of keeping interest rates at unprecedented low levels was always going to end in tears for some imprudent borrowers who saw it as the new normal. It wasn't, it couldn't be. Now companies like Thames Water are paying the price.

I can't see how the UK will avoid a long recession while we have yet to implement all the trade barriers from Brexit. We've gone from being able to trade freely with 700 million people (EU), to hoping to trade with 350 million (USA), and have ended up with neither. The roll over deals from the EU to UK with Japan are not good, nor are the deals with AU/NZ and even if they were the figures are tiny. Meanwhile we continue to drop standards in the hope of attracting more deals at the cost to our national producers. No matter which way you look at it the UK economy has been ruined over the last decade and the general media has only compounded the issue with partisan story telling.

Since inflation is being driven but energy and food costs the way to deal with it is to increase the amount of renewable energy available by relaxing the building requirements and the government in some cases straight up paying people to put them in. Also upgrading houses with electric boilers so gas demand decreases. Finally on the food side turn green spaces into emergency farmland that specifically grows the grains that are in short supply due to the war in Ukraine.

Recessions and booms are part of the economic business cycle yet the costs are still within the power of human hands to manage. The foremost concern to remedy the human suffering and hardship are social services. Conservatives may harp on devaluing them and cutting them, but there are reasons they are truly afraid to and don't when they do have the power to. This goes the same for the US. The name of the game is to prevent people from slipping too far into the depths of poverty in contraction/recession stages to an extent they won't be able to benefit from recovery and expansion periods. The business cycle recession periods are the product of rewarding efficiency and punishing inefficiency - theoretically. The longer inefficient elements stay in the system, the expansions and recovery periods will be blunted. These elements also hamper the true value of competition in the market to reward the best with profits. Any avenue in society that creates non-competitive and unfair circumstances and unfair business practices will have their opportunity to be erased during trough recession periods. An election during this time may hamper the process, but a quick election may also give the government an effective mandate to carry this process out. The consensus perhaps is that Sunak doesn't have this mandate quite secure and is perhaps considered tentative at best. The benefit for having an earlier election is to make greater use of the unpopularity Boris suffers from prior debacles. So long those events are still alive and present in recent memory of the average voter, Sunak will have a position of strength. It may decrease the longer the election is postponed. Even if Sunak does ok, the longer the perception of voters gets molded by Boris' campaign rhetoric, it would be more difficult for Sunak to win an election in the years down the line from today.

One thing that I truly hate about this channel is how incredibly biased it is in favour of bad news. Not once was it mentioned that UK’s economy was predicted to fall into a recession for the better part of the year, without it happening of course. And that although predictions are important, they are not set in stone, not to mention being very unrealistic in the case of the UK. The other thing is that UK has an incredible number of positive things happening in the country, but this channel simply doesn’t make videos of positive things, such as that 30% of all electricity in the UK is made from renewables. I suppose I can’t blame them since no body wants to hear about the positive things with our country, but still…

Looking back as far as the 1970's, previous Chancellors put interest rates into double figures to curb inflation. The BOE today is behind the curve and now cannot do this because of 14 years of "Free Money" dished out to the banks and suchlike which has inflated property prices as well as DEBT. The Country is awash with DEBT and IOUs. The cost to young families today is in rents and mortgages as well as hire purchase for cars and suchlike. Also the cost of child care and schooling is very high. Take mortgages for example.... A £200k mortgage at 10% interest rate = £20K p.a. interest only, which equates to well over £30k earnings! (After tax deductions, N.I., Pension Contributions, Health Insurance etc). If interest rates do not go higher than about 5%, then inflation which is running at near 10% will be impossible to halt and the result will be of course continuing INFLATION and a possible devaluation of Sterling. A devaluation of Sterling will affect everybody and very likely lead to accelerating INFLATION. Basically the UK economy is in a hole that is almost impossible to get out of. As winter approaches, and energy costs rising even more, along with almost guaranteed INFLATION, the future is not very bright to say the least. There is almost stunned silence from this Government and the BOE. The prolific money printing since 2008 and mountainous DEBT has created this monster today!

Two periods of negative economic growth. Economic growth is by definition measured against your previous performance. So for example if you contract 2%, gain .1% and contract 3%. You are not in a recession. If you contract by .1% and. 1% you are. It's a bit misleading because context shows the 1st example is worse but the 2nd example is the recession.

Joel 2:1-19 [1]Blow a trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, For the day of the Lord is coming; Surely it is near, [2]A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness. As the dawn is spread over the mountains, So there is a great and mighty people; There has never been anything like it, Nor will there be again after it To the years of many generations. [3]A fire consumes before them And behind them a flame burns. The land is like the garden of Eden before them But a desolate wilderness behind them, And nothing at all escapes them. [4]Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; And like war horses, so they run. [5]With a noise as of chariots They leap on the tops of the mountains, Like the crackling of a flame of fire consuming the stubble, Like a mighty people arranged for battle. [6]Before them the people are in anguish; All faces turn pale. [7]They run like mighty men, They climb the wall like soldiers; And they each march in line, Nor do they deviate from their paths. [8]They do not crowd each other, They march everyone in his path; When they burst through the defenses, They do not break ranks. [9]They rush on the city, They run on the wall; They climb into the houses, They enter through the windows like a thief. [10]Before them the earth quakes, The heavens tremble, The sun and the moon grow dark And the stars lose their brightness. [11]The Lord utters His voice before His army; Surely His camp is very great, For strong is he who carries out His word. The day of the Lord is indeed great and very awesome, And who can endure it? [12]"Yet even now," declares the Lord, "Return to Me with all your heart, And with fasting, weeping and mourning; [13]And rend your heart and not your garments." Now return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness And relenting of evil. [14]Who knows whether He will not turn and relent And leave a blessing behind Him, Even a grain offering and a drink offering For the Lord your God? [15]Blow a trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, [16]Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and the nursing infants. Let the bridegroom come out of his room And the bride out of her bridal chamber. [17]Let the priests, the Lord's ministers, Weep between the porch and the altar, And let them say, "Spare Your people, O Lord, And do not make Your inheritance a reproach, A byword among the nations. Why should they among the peoples say, 'Where is their God?'" Deliverance Promised [18]Then the Lord will be zealous for His land And will have pity on His people. [19]The Lord will answer and say to His people, "Behold, I am going to send you grain, new wine and oil, And you will be satisfied in full with them; And I will never again make you a reproach among the nations.

According to the current government's apparent economic strategy (if such a thing exists), the UK should be put in a controlled recession to drive inflation down. This is a very clumsy method of controlling inflation, which in the current case should be much easier to deal with using sensible fiscal rather than monetary policies. However the govt absolutely refuses to take fiscal measures so we end up with this. We may have a problem with this way of doing things in that even if inflation is driven down this way, then what? Just for the govt to be able to claim some sort of result on one of their pledges? Or are there real benefits to have?

Cost cutting at this point is impossible without going back on everything they have committed too. For example the huge amount of free child care that's coming next year. It's needed to boost our birthrates to prevent a demographics crisis over the next few decades. The huge covid lending has prevented us from borrowing out of this situation but the very fact we are addressing this now puts us in a better position than say France or Germany who are deeper into there own demographics crises. We face a set of hard choices but we are looking at the right things.
