Can the Ventris sound as lush as the Specular Reverb / Tempus?

This is a quick comparison between the GFI System Specular Tempus and Source Audio Ventris. I bought the Ventris to see if it could replace my Specular Reverb V2, but I also wanted to compare it to the Specular Tempus. The Tempus has all the reverb algorithms of the Specular Reverb plus some extra ones, and it also has 10+ delay algorithms.
This video is by no means an extensive review of the features of each of the pedals, there are plenty of videos on KZbin which offer just that. I thought it would be nice to hear the two side-by-side, so I tried to recreate the default algorithm on the Specular Reverb V2 (called "Spatium" on the Tempus) with the Ventris, using the "E-dome" setting. Here's what's in the demo:
00:00 - 01:45 : Volca Bass + Specular Tempus
01:45 - 03:50 : Volca Bass + Ventris
03:50 - 05:10 : Volca FM + Specular Tempus
05:10 - 06:30 : Volca FM + Ventris
I could have gone into much more detail to recreate the sound of the Specular - the Ventris offers a wide range of parameters that can be tweaked. Overall the Ventris can sound much brighter (depending on the "Treble" setting) and its tone decays slower than the Specular. I think the modulation of the Specular gives it a more natural sound, but that's something that can be tweaked in more detail on the Ventris - diffusion, modulation depth and rate, not all of which are available on the Specular Tempus - if I wanted to get closer.
I decided to try the Specular Tempus after I saw this video: • The Specular Tempus: A...
I wasn't too impressed with the extra things the Specular Tempus has to offer compared to the Specular Reverb V2 that I've owned for a year now. The additional reverb types are good, but in the end I just want that one huge ambient sound, and that's already available on the Specular Reverb. The delay algorithms to me all sound rather 'synthetic' - I'd rather get a delay pedal that sounds more natural. So I will return the Tempus, but I will not get rid of the Specular Reverb just yet. :)
As you may have seen on this channel, we also use the Strymon Big Sky. To clear that up: we're two guys, and I (Abel, I made this video) own the Specular Reverb V2, and now the Ventris as well. Joep, the other guy, owns the Big Sky. So you're probably wondering - which would I pick? For me that's easy: the Big Sky. Nothing beats the Clouds mode, and the realistic reverb settings (room, hall, plate, etc.) all sound very natural. With the Ventris I tend to think the realistic reverbs sound a bit metallic, or too clean, but from using them in jams I think that can add something very interesting to the overall sound.
Video recorded with iPhone 7. Audio recorded with UFX1204 in "standalone" mode, recording directly to USB HDD.

I could say that oscillators can be associated with different vibrational architectures, with which we identify and find ourselves according to particularities, filters represent the way we get to vibrate emotionally, and the effects represent the way in which the structure of our being resonates in the depth of specific sensitivity soul and spirit. The two effects have different psychological and spiritual resonances, as follows: Specular Tempus generates a state of emptiness in consciousness (somehow takes you out of time - stops the mind / a state of "STOP"), while Ventris generates a state of fine adventure, it's like going on a sentimental journey.

Thanks for this comparison. I was wondering about the sound of Source Audio Collider (which has the algorhythms of Ventris) and GFI Specular Tempus, which are both reverb/delay. I see Specular offers much less sound design features on the panel, while Collider has a lot... All in all they seem to sound quite similar, with the Ventris longer in decay as you mentined. Thank you for this useful video!!

That ventris is pretty keen! I’ll keep the tempus though. Another comment or was correct, they start he low cut off pretty aggressive in the presets. Guess the programmer isn’t so into sci-if ha. It gets waaayyy more bonkers with the software ( it updates parameters in real time which is dope for trying stuff out). General consensus seems spot on though...get both. Different case uses.

We sure have some great choices in reverb today!! Consumer reverbs a few decades ago ( or just 10 years ago) sounded like harsh digital reflections in a fake horrible environment. Then came Space, BigSky and all these wonderful pedals...and now we little consumer studios have the opportunity to design spaces light years in size. We have real and beautiful reverbs to enhance every synth sound design. Let creation begin again :)

i just love running into comments like yours. your concise description imaged something, well, light-years in size. like you, i love those big spaces. and to your point, i absolutely agree- my foray into the realm of 90's rackmounted reverb units kind of... well, they didn't illuminate, or reveal, the spaces you've referenced. this tech was my first grown-up reverb. i've collected others since, but this one is the one that gets turned on every single time, for something. =) the space it opens up is simply too big to ignore. cheers to you.

@@kimgaugemusic I'm pretty sure you're wrong on this. It's obvious around 0:45, when he moves to octave 4 on keys, the Tempus sounds brighter than the Ventris, during the same bar played, at about 2:35. Not only that, but the decays on the Ventris are so much more alive, thick and richer. A friend of mine and I both have the Ventris (got mine 'cause of his), and we're both jazz guitar players. He actually uses the Big Sky when he plays his hollow body Gibson due to his feeling that the Ventris is too warm on that Gibson. Another friend of mine is a blues/rock player who plays a pretty bright sounding Fender. He really likes a brighter tone, but once he got the Ventris, he realized that he was sounding too glassy with his Strat/Tempus combo. He then sold it to me, since reverb is my favorite effect.

The Specular Tempus needs a dual mono mode: delay to output a, reverb to output b. Delay for the main signal, shimmer reverb through a separate amp. That way, you could use a splitter in front of the Specular Tempus, to add an overdrive to the delay and a volume pedal to the shimmer (both have to be in front of the delay or reverb...)
@Tony2dH
@Tony2dH 3 жыл бұрын
I agree! I hope that's possible. I'm having a hard time deciding between the Specular Tempus and the Source Audio Collider pedal, which has the dual mono option - so I could use the pedal on two separate synths. If the Tempus had this, I'd probably get it!

Hi Vitalic, I chose the Ventris. Some of the Ventris' reverbs sound more natural to me. And being able to combine two different engines with such a WIDE range of parameters to tweak, that's just great. The plus side of the Tempus would be the different delay algorithms, but I now own a Strymon Timeline, so nothing can beat that... I LOVE the reverb sound of the Tempus, but my Specular Reverb V2 can do that just fine. EDIT: you should also read the description of this video. ;)

That's a great info for me. By myself I was felling that something in ventris too. Yeah I read description and decided put big sky out of compare as its a priori yours favorite)) ok now it seems 4 me a decision between specular reverb2 or ventris dual (seems like I want both!) so since you own both of them does specular reverb2 has less headroom for synths than ventris dual? And face to face: specular reveb2 or ventris dual - which of them is your favorite to go for synthesizers?

Vitalic Baklanov : I’m not exactly sure what you mean by headroom, but I do know that all synths I put through all these reverb boxes sound GREAT. Comparing the Specular Reverb (if you are getting one, get the V3!) to the Ventris is not fair, because the Ventris can do sooooo much more. So if the choice is between those two, go for the Ventris. You won’t be disappointed. :)

i use a small mixer to govern my input levels to the effects. i guess this means, for my gain staging, the signal leaves the synth at 75-80%, is governed higher or lower to unity, and then sent to the effects loop. the incoming effect is mixed in to the original signal to the wet/dry mix desired, then out to the amp. that's what works for me. it's probably a whole lot easier to do it another way, but it sounds pretty good in my room.

I picked up a Korg KP3+ for cheap just to add some effects for my volca(also nice for sampling), it seems it can do reverb+delay, but will I be able to get this level of quality? The presets seem more geared towards EDM...
@SlenterendeBeer
@SlenterendeBeer 5 жыл бұрын
Scelestiis : I’m not familiar with Kaoss Pads, so I wouldn’t be able to tell you. My guess is that it won’t be able to get to this level of quality, since these are considered high-end reverb pedals.

I have the Kp3. It is not really meant to be used like this. The reverbs are very basic and flat compared to these. I found a use for mine hooked to my Volca sample. It makes it real easy to break the beat up and add delays to precise parts. I was about to sell mine before I discovered using it like that.

@@SlenterendeBeer I'm dying to know whether the Spatium algo on the Specular Reverb 2 sounds the same as the Spectular Tempus. Did you have a chance to compare them before you moved along the ST? I'm aware that the range of the mix knob is different on both pedals but I understand that it's the exact same algo. What I want to find out is if there would be any improvement in sound fidelity to be had by upgrading from the SR to the ST if the only algo I plan to use is Spatium. I would be grateful for any input you could share on this as a fellow SR2 user! I couldn't find this comparison anywhere on the internet.
