Can thermal cameras see underwater? Running a few experiments with hot and cold water using an infrared thermal camera in the kitchen sink and observing the results. Cold water into hot water. Ice into hot water. Hot water into cold water.

For someone asked "The big question is why it doesn't measure the air?" - you can see on my channel the tubes from boiler, this is pure heat that not visible to the eye, so it measure everything with contrast.

This is also why clouds completely block the thermal radiation going from the surface to space
@DoolyCooly
@DoolyCooly 2 жыл бұрын
It's the opposite. I had to fact check myself. Clouds don't necessarily block radiation they reflect solar radiation from the sun which keeps us and the earth cool. The earth isn't a reflective planet , water, earths elements which make up the earth do not reflect technically but yes not 100% of all radiation is absorbed. I've read that roughly 30 percent is emitted into space. There's a whole bunch of variables to factor in when talking about reflection and absorption so yeah. I was confused with your comment because what kind of radiation would emit from the earth to space that would be reflected by clouds. Are you speaking of the radiation that would harm the ozone layer? I mean I can see what you mean now by clouds playing a role in reflecting such radiation from the surface but I never heard about that. If you can explain further that would be nice.

I mean black body radiation emitted by the earth surface. Outgoing Long-wave Radiation (OLR) is electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths from 3-100 μm emitted from Earth and its atmosphere out to space in the form of thermal radiation. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outgoing_longwave_radiation

I thought your hands in the cold water but refraction might make them seem contorted. Also I wander about the color range, if you could zoom in on only water or clamp the color range to a smaller temperature range the hands might be more visible. I'm guessing but would be interested to see that. I don't know it the attenuation of these wavelengths are very in water.

Water is similar to air, hot water rises. This is why it floats on the surface and you can see it on the thermal camera.

You would just see the temperature of the water immediately in front of the lens. It would be like sticking a regular camera in a pool of black ink, all you would see is black

It could measure the air, on the unit, itself. But, so could a thermometer. Lol Or, are you asking why you can't measure through air, to a distance to figure out the temp of the air, in a different location?
@fractalnomics
@fractalnomics 2 жыл бұрын
@@shoreangler3383 Yes, the 'air' has a temperature and can be measured by a thermocouple or other thermometers, including the Raman spectrometer. But the 'air' (nitrogen and oxygen) cannot be measured with these instruments at any temperature, and they are not here. They can measure, and I have tested, CO2. This is indeed how CO2 is measured, and the microbolometer and the thermopile are what we use to know the greenhouse gases. I have deduced that the greenhouse gases are really the gases that are detected by the bolometer or thermopile, they are the thermoelectric gases. Nitrogen and oxygen need a Raman spectrometer to measure their temperatures, and they do exquisitely.
