My old Rat developed a few problems so I bought the Rude Mouse. The only difference I notice is that it is way lighter than the Rat, which is a good thing for my pedal board.

the cheap one pushed the lows a little more it seemed, both are great. can't go wrong for the price or real estate on your board.

This thing sounds almost identical, I except where I figured it wouldn't, is in the headroom. You can hear more dynamics without a doubt in the RAT. I think most people would never hear the difference, but if you listen in the pick attack, and the ambient harmonics (and ever so slight noise) you can hear it. I suspect it could be the voltage difference that is causing it. When I used one I used it very similar to the way Nuno says he uses it, because the filter thins the tone (creating a more dynamic experience than your Amp alone), while delivering the tiniest bit but of extra harmonics. I'm not sure the clones can do this. I honestly never have owned one that had the original LM308 (I don't think) so exploring to see if anyone has cloned it.

A good video as always. The Rat gain is ~ 200. At 9V split supply, around 20 should be all the op amp can do w out distorting. But you don't hear it distort since its clipping point is way above the 2 diodes that provides the sound. But the cleans below the diode clipping level probably cause the slight variances in tone between the real and clone. So the op amp does make a tiny difference. I'm curious what op amp it is. Have you looked inside ?

@@SRguitar That's the new op amp , I think. The op amp they used when it first came out is now not made. Is the Sonic Cake the same op amp , or is it too hard to see ? You'd probably have to take it apart. If so, never mind.

The RAT is superior. It's more dynamic, crunchy and "boisterous". It hits harder, without it meaning louder.

I'd get the orginal rat because it looks cooler, will be more durable, I can't knock it over with my foot and it has bigger knobs for easier to see adjustments. But yeah soundwise they are pretty much identical it seems. Distortion pedals aren't exactly rocket science to clone I guess. Thanks for the video.
