"Why did the colonists fight the British?" "Well, a combination of resistance to treaties designed to maintain peace with the native population against greedy expansionist speculators, bad governance decisions, tax laws upsetting organised criminals, and a couple of flashpoint incidents of relatively minor real significance that were expanded beyond all proportion in propaganda pamphlets designed to force a conflict." "Sir, please join the line marked 'immediate deportation'"

School House Rock? That was fun going through those with you. I knew all but one. I agree, the UK version was a bit like a pub quiz. I enjoyed doing it. I was so incredibly stressed in the lead up to taking the Life in the UK test, then to sit down for a light quiz, remarkable. I did miss one on that but it was an interesting experience. Congratulations on your citizenship. I need to get my butt in gear and get mine going. Xx

Well done you! It's interesting to see the different focus between the UK & US when it comes to these tests, but I can see why. Most Britons just take for granted things like free speech because, with an unwritten constitution, the last time anybody thought it necessary to write this stuff down was in the Magna Carta (and with PAYE, most of us never need to know when to submit a tax return).
@davidgriffith82923 жыл бұрын
I was following the tests as you ran them and also passed, though apart from the Women’s Rights lady which I guessed I didn’t think that they were particularly taxing - I guess I’m just lucky though most of the historical questions was stuff I learned at school here in the UK (back in the 80’s) so perhaps our history lessons whilst stopping at the end of WW1 were otherwise quite broad ranging.
@alanclague23333 жыл бұрын
I always laugh at the "high taxes" being the cause of the war. At the time the level of taxation in the "colonies" was actually quite low (relative to level of taxes in Britain itself). The real reasons has more to do with the second part of the saying the "no representation" part. Also there were various land ownership issues, prohibitions on expanding further westward and other issues.
@ForgottenMan20093 жыл бұрын
King George may have been away with the fairies some of the time but he wasn't a complete bastard and, on being made aware of peoples to the west, bestowed British citizen rights to them. This went down like a lead balloon with the colonists and was the real driver to disconnect with the UK. The Boston Tea Party was a just a PR cover for the real motive. The 'first nation' peoples in Canada faired somewhat better , albeit, not without fault by the that state.

How do you cope with being liable for paying taxes in two countries on the same income and assetts? I understand that the US of A is the only country that doe not recognise dual taxation exemptions.
@simonrook57433 жыл бұрын
Most countries have a single taxation agreement, so tax paid in a second country (one where you reside less than 183 days a year) can be deducted from tax in the primary country. I do this as my work in India requires me to pay some income tax there, I then work out my U.K. tax liability using my full salary and deduct that paid in India and that’s how much I owe HMRC.
