Leave on the rare sticker no matter how damaged it is. It's basically the axe theory at this point. If you replace the Handle of an axe and then later on the head of an axe. Is it even still the same axe. I would have sanded and buffed out the original screen lens and same goes for the scratches than sanding. If it needs to be restored than people care about it being as close to the original as possible with as many original parts are possible.

I clean and refurb/restore lots of these kind of things too. I don't suggest using an exacto knife to scrape away that dirt and grime. Let it soak in hot water with some dish soap, or I also like to use Simple Green. Toothbrush works great for edges and hard to get places. But a scratch pad works wonders for the main surface. So does Magic Erasers, just be careful since those will remove any painted logos if you're not careful. The Magic Eraser can also get rid of minor scratches.

This was really informative and interesting to watch. What a difference from before and after! I've recently started collecting various Game Boys of various condition, some I want to mod, others I want to keep in their original specification as much as possible. I never realised there was such a thriving and passionate modding scene for these old consoles. I felt like it was something that would be well beyond my capabilities, but so long as you pay attention and don't get ahead of yourself it looks like a relatively easy piece of kit to clean up and maintain.

I have two Game Boy Colors and both of them have the soft speaker/crackling issue. Was always worried I'd have to replace the entire component but I had no idea just cleaning them out would be an option! Keen to try restoring mine when I get the tools. Also I think you made a good choice replacing the sticker! It would've been great to keep the Game Freak logo and retain that little detail but when you're going for aesthetics I think having that clean and new look takes priority sometimes-especially considering the condition that original sticker was in.

Should have took a heat gun or something to the sticker to loosen it up or something...then you could have re-used it. I've transferred stickers before to replacement shells when I've redone SPs and GBCs....

Thats the primary way to spot a fake. Not that there's many going around, but it's a rule of thumb for collectibles not to replace or remove things like that.

Another good tip for cleaning cartridge slots is a card (gift card, credit card, etc.), some alcohol, and an eyeglass cloth. Works just like the pink one you used here

@dolofonos If it's one I had growing up, I'd keep it for the fact that it is my childhood handheld. No other reason. Other than that, I don't care to even look for collectible or rare gaming items just because of worth. The only thing worth anything is childhood memories.

I remember playing one of these when I moved over to Australia from the United Kingdom. Every time the plane was turning, the sun would glare on the screen and I wouldnt be able to see what I was doing and as a child, that was like the worst thing ever. Ohhh how times have changed 😂
