Ukraine doesn't have enough AA defense systems. Its AA system is structured as a layered defense system, with a more dense network of short range systems at a small distance behind the front line and some larger and more capable systems behind it. This layered system is meant to intercept most of the threats before or shortly after they enter the territory of Ukraine. That system has proven itself very capable against low and slow flying drones, but isn't as capable against high and fast flying missiles. Additionally, Ukraine has deployed similar layered AA defense systems more densely around major cities and military or civilian points of interests - power plants, weapons factories and so on. These do a good job against mostly anything Russia can throw at them. But they aren't as dense as they should, due to lack of equipment, and therefore Russia can saturate them, if it is willing to spend many expensive missiles at once - like it happened in this attack. Kyiv in particular is a large, widely spread out city - the densely populated part of the city, fully occupied by buildings, is over 100 square kilometers. It's difficult to defend this entire area, when you don't have enough equipment.

When you cannot make the equipment, and your handlers cannot supply enough air defence equipment, and the other side has the capability to find a way through with saturation and overload, or with hypersonics, then why did you choose to fight ? Why was Ukraine and the western media telling all along that Ukraine is shooting down 95% of the missiles and any damage was due to debris ? Ukraine should have stayed neutral and not have believed the US had the equipment in quality and quantity to beat Russia. Forethought is always better than afterthought.

They can't find something which has been invented yet. Western air defences are clearly a few years behind Russian technologies. When "Oreshnik" comes into full production, the Western air defences will fall a few decades behind the Russian attacking capabilities. In the nutshell, for Ukraine to have electricity anytime soon, they need to surrender as soon as possible.
