Hello young 'uns. My feeling about satnav is that it's good as a help when you know where you're going; what I usually do is check the route beforehand, going over the road numbers and main junctions, noting them down on a note pad that I usually put aside and keep in an easily accessible pocket. Sometimes I navigate using just that piece of paper, switching off the nav aid entirely. I do also carry with me a paper map. But the important thing for me is to feel quite familiarised with the route before getting there.

I use a Garmin HGV satnav and the updates on it are ridiculously infrequent. I had a software update a couple of weeks ago but the maps haven't been updated since February in Europe. Although not many roads have been built in the UK since then, speed limits are changing every week. Garmin satnavs have a great feature set, much better than TomTom's which don't provide even a phone interface anymore, but we need a map update at least every month. It's been seven months now.

Seeing you on the Autobahn brings back lovely childhood memories of travelling off the ferry at Ostend through to Aachen, then Cologne stopping at Koblenz for the first night of our family holiday. We would then be on our way to northern Italy. This would have been in the mid 1950s. Then the added ‘excitement’ of the Severn Bridge and first part of the M4 opening in the 1960s - no more going through Gloucestershire via Lydney, think Polish country lanes with potholes rather than cobbles or sand. 🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀 Then the M4 completed all the way to London in the late 1960s early 1970s. Just in time to enable my family to stay over night with me in London before facing the South Circular road on the way to Dover. Happy days! 😃😃😃😃

In Germany it is forbidden to drive between traffic jams , but most people do give you space, only if you get a fine for it, it is quite expensive by German standards , In the Netherlands it is also officially prohibited, but it is tolerated as long as the traffic jam is driving less than 50 km/h and the speed difference with the cars may not be greater than 10 km/h , and yes driving on the autobahn is very bumpy and uncomfortable, but with a simple setting in your google maps you can avoid that and get to 100 kmh roads

Totally agree with you about stereo on bikes - those who have it are posers - not bikers, the sound of the bike is all you need, especially if something goes wrong.

Haha no I believe filtering is illegal I believe. And some German drivers just hate bikes so beware
@ontheroadadventure4 ай бұрын
We were quite lucky really we filtered all day without drama, we didn’t know it was illegal though….

We disagree about the stereo, with a stereo on you can still hear what's going on around you, if your listening to music through your headset you don't hear as good, by the way, it looks like you may have your Google maps set on night mode (auto is better) .... Ewa is very comical (Mandy)
@ontheroadadventure4 ай бұрын
Yes i think we need to play with the screen settings on the Twins to be able to see the maps a bit clearer, so far so good though, its working well, we just need to go wireless

Lane splitting is NOT legal in Germany, and probably a German car will block you doing that. Happened to me more then once. At this moment there is discussion going on in German parliament if motorcycles can use the emergency lane in case of traffic jam. Let's hope so!
