If the premise of your video is how to professionally paint a motorcycle with a can, perhaps it would have been instructive to actually show the painting with a can.

Yes, the problem is that over spray kills my camera lenses. I can afford to buy a new o e every time I want to film painting a part. If you are willing to lend me your camera for that purpose I'd be more than happy to film the whole process.

Great looking job Mackie. A couple additional tips for those wanting to do this 1.) Be careful to ensure the primer, guide coat, and top coat are compatible. You can't for instance use a lacquer top coat over an alkyd resin (enamel) guide coat. The lacquer may bubble the guide coat in that case. 2.) There are 2-pack rattle cans available. They have two compartments. Press a button on the can and the catalyst mixes with the paint. The can then has a pot life.

budget doesn't always mean rattle cans, I have found that rattle cans are actually more expensive than buying paint by the quart and spraying with a gun. For that same amount of money you can buy paint by the quarts and spray more than one project with it, Sand paper and masking tape are your actual biggest expenses!

Great job, with good prep you can get a great job with rattle bombs. I now mostly use the 2k clear in a can. Found a great supplier near me and price isn’t much more than the usual 1k stuff. Only tip is batch jobs as once the can has had the activator added its good for about 2 days if kept cool. Rock on dude🎸

I couldn't understand why I was getting streaks only to discover I was laying it on too close, I will say it myself you would think you did it, though I think because I used Matt Black it was forgiving. BUT it's not finished, and had intended finishing it today but can't find the decals I bought. I hope I am doing the right thing, Matt Black, Decals then Matt clear coat (and that's when I mess it up). Thanks.

Its not a good idea to just fill dents with filler. Your best bet is to borrow or rent a stud gun and weld some studs in the dent and use a slide hammer to pull as much of the dent as possible. Then you apply a nice thin coat of filler. That is how the professionals do it.

@MackieBass
@MackieBass 6 жыл бұрын
It should work Ricky, just give it good airing before applying the top colour, as sometyimes the thinner canget some real nasty reaction as it hides in the "pores" of the existing paint.
@rickyevans3845
@rickyevans3845 6 жыл бұрын
well the top layer came off easy (previous owner didnt lacquer top coat, so it run when petrol touched it) i now have the underneath colou showing awaiting the wet and dry, 600 grit. The colour right now is a very dull green, any colours (apart from black) which will take over green easily? And, apparently I should be able to bang a colour on top of the green without the need for primer.
@MackieBass

I'm glad you made this video, very interesting. I have a two tone red and white paint scheme to attempt on my tank, it just has a light coat of grey primer on bare metal at the moment. What primer would you use for that, would grey primer be okay? The paint manufacturer recommends red primer for the red and white primer for the white, obviously I would rather just use one colour primer.
@MackieBass
@MackieBass 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, i'd stick with grey primer - it's a good neutral base and goes well with any colour really. It also covers anything nicely, way better than the white stuff. Good luck with it!

My paint keeps doing the wrinkle thing every time I put clear on it. Maby you can help please. I'm using all same brand paint. I use water and soap to sand and then all looks good. Good job. But....In a year or less depending on usage Jean abrasion, bug and road splinter abrasion, and petrol spillage will make it old all too soon. Rattle can paint seems too soft to last. I guess you get what you pay for in terms of durability. Shame really as the prep is the same for all paints to get the desired finish.
@MackieBass
@MackieBass 6 жыл бұрын
That's true Dave, but not everybody got access or the money to do it profesionaly. This way if one wnats to "fix" their paintjob themselves...they can do it on the cheap. It doesn't take much to make their first bike looking so much better. This is really aimed for the younger riders really. DIY and all that :)

What I needed was a finer filler. Or even filler primer, but it's not a show bike, it's an everyday work pony :) thanks for your comment bro.

@@anthonyquantuman730 eage eyes! Perhaps there are defects, I can even see it in the video. Maybe it's covered by the filler cap? It's a little 125 that was every day learner bike. Does it really matter that much? Anyway, well spotted bro. I could have done a better job on it.
