I believe the reduced action has more to do with the tail hook. It's quite a bit longer than the treble, so the hook's center of gravity is set further back. Furthermore, it has higher drag due to its larger profile. You would most likely have to reduce weight on the tail to compensate. Try going a size down on the hook and test?

I did this mod on a six inch SP minnow straight out of the box. I used the exact owner hyperwire #6 split rings and lone diablo 4/0s shown in the video. The minnow plug out of the box was 31 grams out of the box and after mod 35 grams, or four grams heavier. The difference was the each hook and spit ring off of the original was two grams as compared to the hyperwire split ring and lone diablo 4/0 which weighed 4 grams. It is definitely a heavier plug now, but I am still going to give it a go.

Just to mention the stock hooks and hardware is okay to use if targeting schoolie sized stripers and smaller to medium sized blues. I've changed them out for a larger 3x size treble and beefier split ring just to give the lure a tighter wobble. But if you usually have smaller fish in general you will be alright if you do not change hardware out. Plus if on a budget you will be okay till your able to get the higher quality hardware down the road. Just keep in mind you may need to change out the treble quicker so keep a hook sharpener near by if this is the case.

Another worthwhile video from SWE. Now, we're fishermen, not physics professors, but the explanation for the difference you're seeing in the action is due to the difference in length of the "lever" between the two riggings. While the weight of the hooks/rings may be the same, the force required to move them is different because the singles hang significantly lower than the trebles. Hope that makes sense. If you want to come closer to original action, reduce either the weight of the single hook with a smaller size or shorten the "lever" with a smaller split ring. Personally, I just use VMC trebles with the barbs crushed.

Sweet as, I'm in Brisbane, Australia and this just popped up in my recommended and I love it. Great production and really interesting! Maybe a feathered single on the rear could add some of that drag you're after? Should be pretty easy to bind on a nice teaser feather to the shank of that rear single.

Another option is to clip one hook off of each treble, leaving two double hooks. Better for the fish, and only a small change in the action.

nice video. that overhead camera tells the full story and sends us back to the drawing board if we're serious about catching fish. sp works best with a varied, slow retrieve because it is primarily a nighttime plug. i'd be surprised if you get the same action with this cadence, given how little wobble there is at an equal speed to the trebles and as you say "how long it takes to get going." some guys swear they don't lose fish and get the same hookup ratio with singles on sps, even spooks. i'm definitely not one of them. john skinner does a great job comparing the two and he can hardly catch fish with singles on topwater. crush your barbs down to absolutely nothing and trebles just fall out 95% of the time. get some heavy duty pliers and really squeeze them down. get some needlenose for situations where your regular pliers won't reach that rear treble, or think about using a single treble but watch out for the action going to shit and test every plug before you do. rear teaser, some rear weight hanging off of a split, there are many options. every fisherman should own a scale and use it. you'd be surprised how often you get a wooden plug from the manufacturer which is an 8th, a quarter or even a half an oz out of spec. i do not care for the action with a single hook, never mind the hookup ratios, on this plug. i use 2/0 and 1/0 vmc trebles depending on how deep i want to dive and how buoyant the plug is. the mustads are too heavy. i find that the floating model works best in current when you give it just enough extra weight to get it to slowly sink or suspend. you get a lot more control over how deep into the water column it is diving, and the twitches give it much more of a downward dive. sp is my go to for this class of plug for a bunch of reasons, but the biggest one is that i can actually cast it to where i need to be. bombers, redfins, the old hydro minnow all cast like shit. i hear very good things about the new hydro minnow after the weight transfer changes, but i cannot confirm that yet because i haven't casted mine. have fun this year boys and be safe. spring is just around the corner.

Great comparison video Eric. Can you test the SS darter with and without the rear treble and talk about the impact on the action, please? Can you also discuss the difference on catch ratio of needlefish with or without the tail hook? Thanks for the series.
@SaltwaterEdge2 жыл бұрын
I'll do the Super Striker Darter with and without the rear treble very soon! As far as catch ratio that may be a harder number to come up with, can depends greatly on location, season, and the fisherman. Ill have some of the guys who frequently fish needles here try it out and report back on what they think. Thanks for watching!

My favorite way to rig a 6 inch Floating SP - Bkk 4/0 Raptor 4x on the belly with an owner split-ring w/ No tail hook = Suspending SP Minnow @ 8-10ft depth.
@RIDETHESUNSHINE9 ай бұрын
Try the double frogging type hook of a comparable size to the original treble hook or a size or two bigger without the split ring on the belly position hook point riding up like the tail hook. When retrieved the hooks ride closer to the body, and less likely to snag on anything. This will work on any stick type lure. Best of Luck, and Stay Strong, Will

Go with the single treble on the belly and a bucktail flag (or nothing at all) on the tail ;-)
@karlneumann68332 жыл бұрын
You don’t feel like the ILS affect the action drastically in comparison to trebles ? I’ve tried several combinations and ended up running most of my SPs with a front treble and a tail flag no hook. Seems like I had though time trying to get weight right when switching out hooks on these plugs, anyway cool videos guys ✌🏾
@SaltwaterEdge2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Definitely effects the action but to an amount I’m willing to deal with for the catch and release benefit. Tail flag is a great idea but I saw hookup percentages go down with an Inline front hook and tail flag no hook rear. I’m testing a tail flag single next to dial it in

Good video useful info been experimenting with dual inline singles and canal rigging single treble (crushed barbs of course) don't think I've had significant missed hook ups with either but hard to tell as I think sp's tend to call in the more aggressive small to slot fish...

Great vid gang, Typically fish treble belly with ILS at the rear on the sp, been using the VMCs for hooks. I wonder how much the difference in hooks (treble vs ILS) come into play when working the lure dead slow as one does fishing at night.
@SaltwaterEdge2 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a great setup. In my experience when the sp is fished super slow the current is a huge factor in the action
@spike.strat131810 ай бұрын
the longer single hooks may be having a keel effect on the lure. The action does seem subdued, once in current that may be a bonus. ( current causing some lures to go crazy and have too much action) since this was a year ago, how did it work out for you?

Would you think adding a bucktail single hook or a tail flag would help the action?
@SaltwaterEdge Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, tail flags are always a good option for adding action. This was more looking at just off-the-shelf hooks. You can spend a lifetime testing out options which is part of the fun!

What do you think about keeping the treble hooks and closing up some or all of the barbs?
@SaltwaterEdge Жыл бұрын
Definitely an option that would keep the weight and drag almost exactly as it comes from the factory. With bent hooks on light tackle, I have found that my line can find its way into the hook and get stuck there. Taking more time bending the hooks and ensuring there aren't any gaps would most likely fix that problem!

@gabrielduarte3904 there is absolutely some change in action, it’s unavoidable when changing hooks from how the lure was designed, we have found that weight is more important than size when it comes to changing things

Ive been using treble hooks and single hooks on daiwa sp minnow for a year now i got less bites from single hooks. Why? Because single hooks make the wiggles action unnatural. Not to mention its harder to crank and harder to set the hook. Treble hooks make the swim bait more natural. Reasons why the manufacturer added treble in the first place. Ive seen so many bluefin trevally and Gt's just following the single hook daiwa sp minnow but no strike. Not to mention I missed to many hook strike opportunity on single hooks. So in conclusion, I go with treble hooks hands down for natural swim and better hook set. Trust me when i tell you this. Save your time and secure your catch.
@SaltwaterEdge4 ай бұрын
A lot of people, myself included, are willing to trade off catch amount for fish health, single hooks can cut down on the damage done to fish, depending how they are used. They can also speed up the time getting the fish back in the water. Lures always work better with the hooks they were designed with, but when trying to keep fish alive this single hook option works great.

If the accuracy of your scales is + or minus 1g and your weighing 3g the accuracy is + minus a third. Thats not very accuate in my book.

Bro just put a single hook on the tail and keep the belly treble and you get a really good action.
@vsonic862 жыл бұрын
That is a horrible modification I ever seen. With 20 hits, still can't hook up a fish with this inline single hook. Who has such a patient to keep those hit get missed? Even JohnSkinner with tsunami talking popper on an inline single hook, it is hard to hook up a blue fish. Here, I help you out. Instead of two tremble hooks, you keep one. Even better, use two split ring and one swivel with a better tremble hook. Now, give that a try.
@SaltwaterEdge2 жыл бұрын
That is certainly one opinion on this. I have not had a significant loss in hookup ratio with this setup. The biggest thing about this modification is it is meant to protect the fish and make for easier released. I would rather hook up less and release healthy fish every time. Calling it the most horrible modification you have ever seen is a pretty wild way to look at it and fishing.
