Yes! And include some info about Casper Wy. lol. That boy is very good at curating the vibe & he is very good at the visuals - he makes Casper really seem like it must be pretty similar to Jackson Hole. It is not. RuPaul & their (his? Not sure) husband are fracking barons, they are the money level ruling Jackson. Casper is where everyone has a cousin who goes to VoTech. It’s a good vo tech tbh, lol, but it’s not a posh place & everyone seems to be buying his little charade on line. My friend whose brother lives in Casper (after votech!) says he just annoys everyone. It’s only a bit touristy, it’s a blue collar rural transportation & distribution hub, it’s exactly like Billings or Bismarck, and we prairie westerners are greatly bothered by his nonsense (and I’m only talking about non-homophobes; the ones who hate him for that can suck it). Not only is he extremely sketchy from an ethics & safety perspective, but he’s not respectful of our social culture. We don’t have celebrities, just some people are more well known & they have to be nice all the time, no matter what. You don’t present yourself to the community as a celebrity! I also feel like when the conflict of interest comes in, it’s not all lying. It’s that the relationship between the influencer and brand sways their judgement. So even if they’re not consciously thinking, “these eyeshadows aren’t good but I’ll say I’ll like them,” they’re biased to like products from a brand that’s paying them, or sending them on trips, or where they’ve become friendly with the owner. Just like if I had a friend with a small business, I’m going to see their stuff through the lens of my relationship with them, not in the same way I’d see the same products from someone I don’t know.

If we, as a society, pay over £40 for 1 or 2 eyeshadows, these big companies worth billions will keep charging us that, or more. If you stop buying them, they will make them cheaper. While these eyeshadows might be made from pearls, they aren't worth that money. There's still a big profit mark up on them. You are paying for the brand and the packaging. The eyeshadow itself will still not cost anywhere close to what you'd pay for it to make it 🤦♀️

Sometimes I wonder if a lack of class mobility in America is a driving force behind some of this. Nobody wants to turn down those checks once they start coming in. This is their shot at a rags-to-riches story. Especially for people from lower/working class backgrounds. What other opportunity are they going to get to make that kind of money? This goes for all types of influencers, not just beauty. I think it could be especially true for family vloggers…a shot at financial stability will make people do crazy things :(
@ZijnShayatanica2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's really an every-man-for-themselves culture here, even more than in other places. That's also a lot of the reason behind why so many people are okay with tax breaks for millionaires/billionaires - everyone expects to one day BE a millionaire/billionaire, so they don't want those "consequences" to turn around on them someday. It's really sad.

Hannah, try indie eyeshadows! So much sparklier and way more gorgeous and high quality than the Patrick Ta, and even PMG. Terra Moons, Clionadh, Touch of Glam… you have to try them. Touch of Glam especially. All you need is like the NYX glitter glue and use a tiny dot tapped over whatever mattes you use and they’re fucking amazing. I always thought mainstream brands didn’t do enough in the sparkle department so when I discovered indies, I just can never go back! They’re so good and way more worth it than the Patrick Ta in my opinion, as an indie eyeshadow lover and MUA! Can’t recommend them enough. Touch of Glam has these insane holochromes with rainbow sparkles and they’re amazing! I am literally obsessed haha. Even Pat McGrath doesn’t compare.

Every single time you post a video i get SOOO hype. I know you're probably not gonna do Glowmas since you like JUST got back and thats a massive workload, but i hope you do some of the classic glowmas stuff like roasting holiday sets and luxury brands, or doing 'makeup i forgot about' and 'best/worst makeup of 2024'. I dont even wear makeup but i absolutely love hearing you talk about it on the topic though; i can't really speak to what its like for makeup youtube because i basically only watch you and theresa (and sometimes laura mae), but i can speak to art youtubers doing reviews while having a relationship with the brand. One of my faves being Emily Artful, she hasn't been posting in a while but she had a tight relationship with Arteza. She was always SUPER transparent about that fact and also was always willing to give the cons as well as the pros of any product. I think thats one of the biggest things that make me trust a review/reviewer more. If you're willing to tell me where things in the product fall short, even if you have a good relationship with the brand, that tells me that you value your fanbase.

all great points! also, even with smaller youtubers than mikala and jeffrey. i get so annoyed when their favorites of the month or of the season are always completely different. tastes change but your favs can't change that often. but they are incentivized to change up their recommendations bc it widens the pool of money they can get from affiliate codes. but it loses people like me who want a regular person who wants this creator as a resource. i guess this is a cost of the"democratized" influencer economy that is based on brand deals and codes. i guess maybe its usually safer trust wise to take a deal that isn't totally tied to your brand like a makeup guru promoting a VPN but that will drastically limit the money you can make. like what is an influencer but a sentient billboard when you dilute it all down?
@andrewharmony2 ай бұрын
I agree that it's hard to trust influencers because they get paid so much for speaking positively about products. One thing though I want to point out is that I think Patrick Ta's glitter eyeshadows are overpriced and the quality does not justify the price of $42 for 2 eyeshadows (see Kiki Chanel's video on greedy makeup brands that she posted today).

But now we're so inured to that reality that we freak out, but can't honestly expect anything different because it's the norm. Being a successful beauty influencer feels like a catch 22. They start to gain followers because people trust their opinions, which is the exact reason that brands end up wanting to work with them. But by doing a lot of collaborations and promoting many products, they in turn become less trustworthy and reliable. You follow someone on social media until they become so successful that you can’t trust them anymore. Then you look for smaller creators whose reviews you can trust, until they become bigger. And then you rinse and repeat the cycle lol.
