A friendly critique: If I see episode 3 of something that I like I'm automatically gonna look for episode 1 or better yet, the playlist. I don't wanna have to struggle looking for it on your YT page. I'd prefer to see it in the recommended videos on the left or worst case, I'd to open up the video's description and find the relevant links there. Sadly that wasn't the case with this video... Anyway, I still love this video and I hope to one day see episode 1 and 2, and if you guys kept it up, episode 4 to 10,000 lol. Cheers.

How has teh Wayfarer sailing been going? Everything figured out? I've had mine for 10 years and still figuring the rigging out - sigh.

@@DanandRow Honestly! Mine was given to me like a used toy and no instructions. I'd love to find a Wayfarer community to share pictures and questions with to fast-track things. Figuring out the spinnaker for example and I also have some hardware at the base of the mast that I'm not 100% on.

You should be able to raise the mast by laying it in the boat and fitting the tabernacle pin. Then raise by one of you liffting the mast while the other pulls the forestay.

Interesting, we are making plans for the wayfarer and it needs to be set up correctly so we will give this a try next time we take the mast down. Thanks 👍

@@DanandRowand attach a line to the forestay to make even easier for the person hoisting

Take the mast and lay it on the boat and slide it into the tabernacle. Pin it. Attach the stays. Then lift it up into position and attach the forestay. I attach a line to the stemhead and bring it back to the cockpit. After I have lifted the mast I run that line around the mast above the boom fitting to hold it in place and then go attach the forestay so I don't need anyone to hold the mast up for me. Note I have a 2nd pin in the stemhead I attach to because my jib is not hanked on (clipped to the forestay). You may or may not have a place for a pin there.

Hi I live in Thailand and am in the process of renovating a Wayfarer. Like you I have no idea how to rig the bitch and yes I have named it the *Bitch.* Could you do another video slowly rigging the boom, kicking strap etc.. Or come to Thailand and play with my boat.

Your dinghy is very similar to a Chrysler Olympic sailing dinghy I had. My brother and I had fooled around with sailing a fishing boat with a sail and it was fun so I bought the Chrysler dinghy with a broken transom. I repaired that and took it out on a lake. Where the fishing boat plodded along when the breeze hit the sails on the Olympic racing dinghy it took off. It wasn't fun it was exhilarating and my addiction to sailing started. After about two years sailing the Chrysler I went to a 18' Prindle catamaran and that thing is a rocket. It is a demanding boat to sail but worth it. You will have a lot of fun with your boat you should use a head / jib sail with the main and it will sail much better.

What a great story, thanks for sharing it and taking the time to comment. A jib with the main is definitely the plan. 👍

Your highfield lever is too low. It should be really hard to lift up. This puts tension in the rig. Once you have more tension the clips that hold the sail to the forestay are not needed. To start just lock the traveller in the centre. Once you start sailing in a stronger wind you can let it off some. This allows the boom to move out while you keep the sheet in. This keeps tension in the leech (back edge of the sail) keeping the sail flatter so having less power. In very light wind you can pull the traveller to windward. This allows you to centre the boom without putting much tension in the leach, but in practice this is not easy and only worth it when racing.

Ok, we just put the new highfield lever at the point the old one was. What you’ve said makes perfect sense… Thanks 🙏

A fun and honest video. Thanks for sharing your experience with your Wayfarer. I have an older one as well, sail #2186 from the 1970s. Mine is still under repairs and I’ve yet to launch it. It came with a book which has been helpful to me. Good luck!

@@DanandRow That would be amazing! I can find one on RYA channel for a newer Wayfarer but nothing for an older MK1 which I assume will have its differences!

The fun is they are not all the same even for the same model. There are different masts with different layouts. My wayfarer II has a magic box on the mast in addition to the original sawtooth setup and uses a wire rope (cable) for the jib halyard and the jib is not hanked on and is also on on a furler. The jib tensions the mast not the forestay once the jib is in place. There is a spinnaker setup and a host of blocks to lead most everything back to the thwart with the exception of the downhaul/cunningham and the jib furler control. Very complex compared to this setup. How you use those blocks is your preference of course and the only hints I had was the length of the various lines. I don't think the guy I bought it from ever sailed it since all of the sheets were missing from the shelf where he kept the bits. Oh... the mast I have has a tenon on the bottom that is supposed to slide into a mortise with a pin to step it but that bit of kit is missing and I have the flat plate for the standard 'log' style mast instead. One of these days I'll maybe fix that.
