Can't wait to see how that monster rebounds this year. If you do any grilling, you might want to save some of those logs. I've never tried fig wood, but it might be alright for putting in your smoker.

That lichen on the tree bark would produce a bitter taste on the food you eat if used in a smoker or on a grill. I used some oak branches (that had lichen on it) on a grill once and the food was ineddible because of a bitter taste. They just need to go to the burn pile like Travis said.

I have the exact battery-operated chainsaw as you. A few months ago, the chain broke. Do you know where to go to get a replacement chain?

Not sure, but I bet Amazon has them.

What about trying to move an unestablished fig tree? I planted a fig tree in ground in September or October & I’m having some regret about where I planted it, I’m scared to move it bc I don’t want to kill it.
@LazyDogFarm8 ай бұрын
Should be fine to move. Just dig up a nice root ball around it.

Will it produce figs this summer after a severe pruning?

It should

I planted a 5 inch pitiful looking Brown Turkey twig last March here in Louisiana. It grew about 9 branches and a few were three feet long. I took two cuttings after the first frost and one is putting on leaves. I covered it with a thick white plastic barrel before the nightmare freeze we`re having. Before putting the barrel over it I piled pine straw, chopped leaves, and some green grass clippings over it, then put a garbage bag and thermal blanket on the barrel and tucked the limbs under it. The temperature was about 10 degrees this morning and Mississippi got down to 11 below zero. I covered my turnips with leaves and pine straw, an old dog blanket, and covered my best mustard greens with unassembled greenhouse plastic. Not sure yet if any of this helped. It will be Sunday or Monday before this cold ends.

You'll start getting more figs from that tree if you didn't wait to long to do it. I like Brown Turkey figs, I grew up on them and didn't know there were any other cultivars out there until I was about your age. Now I'm trying to get my hands on some cuttings from Malta where I ate figs as big as lemons that was the best tasting figs I've ever had. I have a person that lives there who keeps in touch with me and I'm hoping to get some cuttings shipped to me very soon.

Just started 7 cuttings from my neighbors fig tree this weekend. Following your directions.

I have two cuttings rooting inside from the Brown Turkey twig I planted last March. One of the cuttings has rooted and it growing leaves under a light. I hope the one outside survived the freeze. It was 10 degrees in central Louisiana this morning. I covered it but it has been very cold and more to come. Mississippi was down to 11 below zero!

Would have been cool if you cut those large limbs into “steps” that you can use to pick the figs off of the taller growth.

Travis, You have to gut the new growth off that big log you're trying to root... The new top growth will take the energy the log needs to grow roots...

Good video. I enjoyed seeing this one. That was one really big fig tree. I did some large cuttings from my grandparents house a month ago but nothing that large. I haven't a clue if they will root but I'm hoping so. Looking forward to seeing the results of yours. Thanks for sharing.

Looks good that tree looks the way I did my pear tree I butchered my pear tree. It was getting too hard to harvest pears, so I brought it down quite a bit. 🍐

I could, but I try and keep all my trees true to variety. I have seen folks graft a bunch of different varieties on a single tree and it looks pretty cool.

I wished there was a fig tree that could stand the cold here in TN, & didn't die back to the ground. But they usually grow back each year to produce! I'm sure the heavy pruning will rejuvenate the tree! I hope the fig tree does great! The old generations coated the cutoffs with something, looked like paint... to seal them off. I'm not sure if that did any good or not...

I did exactly what you did to an old fig tree and am waiting for spring to see if I need messed up. I buried some fig limbs from another fig tree last year! I had many fig trees that I shared with friends!
