Can we save this turtle? 💔🐢

This poor, morbidly obese Diamondback terrapin was taken illegally out of the wild when she was a baby. She was raised in horrid conditions and fed an improper diet. She was power fed to reach adult size in only 2 years!! She was recently surrendered to us and now she’s out challenge. Keep her in your thoughts!

I found or a frog found me! One sleepless winter night, i was watering my plants. And there sat a Frog. I set up.some water let him hibernate in the soil. As soon as t3mps.warmed up i put the frog in a cup w a lid and airholes. I drive him to a Nice lake. He sat frozen as in still the entire trip!! As soon as i stopped the car in the woods at a lake .he started jumping up& down inside that cup. He , He the Frog, knew where he was .he was so happy. I gently shook the cup close to the ground and out he jumped & he tok off leaping. I was going to miss my He frog She Frog. But i knew i was doing what was right by THE FROG! AND I DID!

My aunt took a picture of a wild snapping turtle that was even fatter than this poor girl. I still wonder what it was eating to become such a chonk. Snappers are normally pretty chonky, but this one was so fat she looked like someone inflated a balloon inside of a turtle shell.

We had box turtles that hatched in our back courtyard every year. We also fed our dogs there. They would steal the food if it was wet. They were robust but not as fat as that one. We never took them out of nature even though friends wanted them.

@@judigrumm7190 I've had box turtles and even a pinching turtle lay eggs in our yard. I have never tried to take one in. I was so worried, when I first saw one lay eggs, that we could accidentally harm the eggs with the lawnmower. I was also worried about our doggy maybe messing with the babies, once the eggs hatched. I marked the area for awhile, but they bury them so well, you can't even tell where they laid them just a few days later. Luckily our dog has never messed with one. I wouldn't have known this terrapin is overweight. I don't know enough about them to have a clue. So that's a very good reason for me to leave them in nature, where they belong. I'm happy an expert stepped in for this terrapin. I hope he got to her in time to save her.

@@pamalawashington9371 If a turtle lays eggs in your yard and you want to make the spot, get 4 traffic cones if you can or you can make your own with old 5 gallon buckets with lids or gallon milk jugs even and fill the buckets with sand or kitty litter and make a good size square around the area

I grew up in Jersey (which is why finding this channel, now that I am retired in Arizona, and loving OTIS is a blessing) box turtles were everywhere and as children we would pick them up and run around with them as if they were toys. (Then let them go) I wish opportunity like this channel existed 60 years ago. Maybe you understand why I said what I did. Where I lived, Box turtles were as common as sparrows. Thank you Judi!

@@Donna-P It's probably a little disorienting to fly around if you're a turtle/ tortoise.... but not life threatening😁 They may even like it. Our box turtles lived free in our area but choose to come into a secluded safe area... our 8 foot walled enclosure... and they became familiar with us, as they lived a pretty long time. They would come up to us even after years of flying 😁 So I'm thinking they didn't mind much. The babies were the size of a 50 cent piece and very soft. Soooo cute! We'r did occasionally feed them bologna.... they LOVED IT! I've done a lot of freelance fighting for animals. My list of rescues is long 🙂 18🐕 5🐈 2🐭 2🐹 1🐰7🐦1🦅 5🐿2🐸 100's🐢 20+🦎 4🐍 🐚🦀 🐌 🦋 🐛 🐝 🕷 these and many more...

@@OfficialReckM8 Overfeeding anything that much is torture. I'm a firm believer that unless injured and not returnable to the wild no animal belongs caged and that it usually is torture. Most people feed captive animal unhealthy and sometimes deadly crap. They don't allow enough space for proper healthy exercise. And in the case of young children they demand unnatural behavior from animals. I also don't believe in the breeding of pets. There are plenty to rescue that get euthanized while someone creates more 'perfect' versions.

Yeah, we got a tortoise, and the amount of research that has gone in, from finding reputable breeders so we know its a healthy tortoise tgats not been taken from the wild, making sure the enclosed is the right size, what to feed him, what to avoid letting him eat, if he needs hibernating or not, ect. And even then, he still surprises us by doing things like eating cat poo that the neighbours cat left in the garden without us noticing when we look away for a second... or when we let him have strawberry the first time and he decided he liked it so much he refused to eat the rest of his food because it was not strawberry (he went back and ate it as soon as he realised he was not getting any more strawberry)... it takes a lot of work. Not to mention that you gotta then find a vet with an exotic animal license. Our garden has nothing (other than cat poo) that the tortoise shouldn't eat. And that also took effort. Then we have to bath him, and monitor his weight and size because he's still recovering from the cat poo incident. (It's looking up, no worms and his shell is the right shape again, and he's the right size for his age and species). There's also cleaning the tortoise table, and letting him roam the house (and, in warmer temperatures, the garden. In his little tortoise pen that is a good size for him, and clean of cat poo because, knowing him, he will eat it again if given the chance because his little tortoise brain is not very intelligent. It's alot of work, but we do it coz we love the little guy.

Hi! Thanks for the attention on this short. We hope it gets out there enough to deter people from taking animals out of the wild and that it shows those who choose to keep any species (legally) that you need to do it the right way. I will post an update on her at some point but as of now there isn’t much improvement yet. As suspected, she is suffering from fatty liver disease from being power-fed and of course from living a life on the wrong diet. She doesn’t swim anywhere near as well as a fit Diamondback terrapin, so she’s got a long road ahead of her. She’s still with us so that’s a good thing so far. Because to many reptiles, amphibians and especially fish aren't real pets, but mere decorations. To this day you hear about goldfish being short-lived, even though a quick google will tell you, they are some of the most robust fish there are and can easily live for more than a decade, even thirty years!
