I found an old 1858 map online of Union Deposit, and while there is only one canal on it, there are a few basins and a furnace. Perhaps the one route was for the canal and then rerouted for a furnace bellows water wheel later on.

Perhaps one of those two channels was built to route the creek around the dam while it was being constructed? I have no additional info, just speculation.

That channel is called the mill race it came off the Swatara creek and dumped back in the Swatara creek. It was basically an oxbow that fed the White Oaks Mill where my great great grandfather worked. The original grind stone is still lying there close by. The mill was taking down around 1905.

What an enjoyable hike. I loved the beaver trees, the snake with the cute little face, and the adorable turtles. I didn't know they were wild, we used to buy them in the store. Loved this one❤❤❤❤

Lock 29 is still there on the upper channel if you would’ve kept following that one. You were so close. The channel closest to the park was either part of an old iron furnace operation or flour mill that were both in town in the 1850s.

What is your favorite PA trail to hike? I personally like the Stone Tower Loop Trail.

Do you use any Permethrin to repel ticks? Sure looks like tick heaven with all of those multi flora rose bushes you have to crawl through.
