Huge thanks to the team at Ironroot for putting up with my antics for a week! Make sure to experience their bourbon team, it's mind-blowingly good! And nah, Im not back in Texas again. We just sat on this video for a little while.

I have a different (and possibly better?) Suggestion for the removal of the oil. Just chill the whole thing in a walk-in freezer and you SHOULD be able to return the oil to a solid state, and you can just remove the whole puck.

That’s only going to work if they use an oil that is solid at room temp, which vegetable oil isn’t. i
@ArthurEKing8472
@ArthurEKing8472 Жыл бұрын
@@codename495 ? No... If it was solid at room temperature you wouldn't need to put it into the freezer in the first place! Everything has a point where it will freeze, and any of the vegetable oils are no different in that they will turn into a waxy solid eventually. In the case of doritos, they use a mixture of Canola (-10 C); corn, (-11 C); and Sunflower (-17 C) So they just need to chill it to around -20 Celcius (right around -4 farenheit) and YES the oils WOULD indeed freeze solid. Seeing as my original post LITERALLY said "chill the whole thing in a walk-in freezer" and industrial walk-in-freezers average between 0 and -20 farenheit, this would 100% freeze that oil solid. Seeing as they are all on the top, it's a comparatively simple matter to remove the whole chunk of ice (that contains the alcohol but in low enough concentrations that it's not going to stop the ice from forming) and just cut off the top chunk that contains the nasty fats. This way you're removing 99.9% of the fats that smelled/tasted nasty to begin with. Ergo, you're going to get a much better over-all end product.

Buccees is an experience. When i visited my buddy in Houston. His friend explained Buccees by opening with "I would not eat off a bathroom floor, but if i had to... I'd eat off the floor at Buccees". This was magic.

I ran something similar about 6 months back. I let my mash rest before fermentation and drained from the bottom to get the oil off the top after it cooled. I did not do a all Doritos though and it was only about 10% of my grain bill. Mine came out cheesy but not in a bad way. Aging it on oak, and chili peppers atm.

Awesome episode! I really enjoyed the antics. Been watching for a while now. I'm a beer brewer for the most part and have been curious about distilling but cant. I just moved to Texas and have a quantity of prickly pear cactus on my property. Was thinking of the use in beer. I'm also curious about a prickly pear cactus Rum. would like to see something about it. and thanks for the heads up on a local Distillery. I will be looking for it on my next run to the store. Cheers

Sorry this is off topic. I have been a home beer brewer for years and distilling scares me. My worry is how do you know/test that you are not making methanol? I would be interested in putting my toe in in the water with distilling. Could you point me to one of your videos that would address the safety issues and perhaps an all around beginner still. I have watched the Air still (coffee pot sized video) and that is not for me. Thanks Bill
