I also watch Sailing Ruby Rose II amongst many other channels, they have a new Seawind Cat and have had anchor problems as well from a new buy! You may have seen it. My uneducated guess is you need a rocna anchor with 90m of 10mm or 13mm chain for your size boat. The weight of the chain is significantly heavier and the tests I've seen on this anchor show they are superior. FYI.

😊😊 thanks for watching and for your comment. Our problem is with the windlass gipsy (plastic resin rather than metal alloy) it’s a “value engineering” decision from Lewmar which we do not agree with 😂😂. We have an ultra Anchor 77 lb which sets and holds like a champ and we love it more than any other anchor we had on our boats (this is our third boat) We looked at the Rocna (immensely more affordable at a third of the price) but we would not be able to fit it on our bow roller because of the roll bar. For the chain, I agree a heavier chain has a stronger catenary effect. In French Polynesia you typically anchor in deep water and crowded anchorages so we needed 100 meters of chain, mindful of the additional weight, we downsized from 70 meters 10 mm g40 to a longer 100meters 8 mm G10 chain (Maggi aqua7) resulting in identical weight. G10 8mm is stronger than G4 10mm but as you point out does not have the same catenary effect. We are not too happy with the chain, not because of the holding power but because of the poor galvanization which is a known fact with G10 chains. Maggi claimed to have solved the issue with chemical bonding of galvanization to the harder steel but clearly they did not. I am not sure which anchor is on Rubi Rose. We are going back to a 10 mm g40 when we reach New Zealand. Cheers 😊😊😊😊🤩

Quick response as begin this episode........of course you can up and set anchor without a windlass. To up it m power the boat forward till the anchor is loosened then pull up the chain. Good to have gloves for this.
@HarborsUnknown8 ай бұрын
It can be done, in 50- 60 foot of water there are about 80 lb of chain plus 77 lb anchor is 157 lb at the beginning of pull. Feasible but not easy 😂😂 at my old age. Thanks for watching as always 😊😊

Hi guys, thanks for yet another great video. You get better and better and both look so happy compared to the early days, Great job. Question as always, I picked up you have 8mm chain, I think you have a wonderful Ultra, how big is it?
@HarborsUnknown8 ай бұрын
🤩🤩🤩 thank you! The chain is an 8mm Aqua7 by Maggi. It’s a G70 chain (as compared to the more common G40) supposed to be as strong as a G40 10 mm. The galvanization is however poor and cannot recommend this chain. The anchor is 77lb and works like a charm. We have a swivel. The windlass is a Lewmar VX2 and is undersized, soon to be upgraded 😂😂😂 Thanks for watching

Nice video! How much scope was out when you dragged? Do you think more of the problem was the scope or ground (was it just hard pack)?
@HarborsUnknown8 ай бұрын
Thank you 😊. Probably a combination of both, short scope, 1/3, and coral under sand. We do well with 1/3 in good sand. Not a lot of room in the anchorage, and I was dreading pulling up the chain with a faulty windlass. Thanks for watching and for you comment
@gbsailing94368 ай бұрын
Hey guys just seeing this now and I hear your problem. If you have your scuba tanks about (which I know you do) whether they are full or not, unless they are completely empty, you can pop it onto you BCD and drop down to the anchor and do a quick dive down and up using the BCD to help haul up the anchor. Two methods: 1). Just grab the anchor and sit it in your lap as you squat on the bottom then use the power inflator to raise YOU and the anchor to the surface. You don't need to come up too slowly because you have been down very long as long as you breath out hard on the way up. 2). have a small rope loop with a Carabiner attached to the BCD. Drop down to the anchor and put the loop around the stock near the head and then attach it to the BCD - you could probably do this without having to wear the BCD meaning that you can control the tank/bcd/anchor in front of you as you ascend. This is probably the most safest method as you can keep you gauges on top of the anchor and everything in front of you while you breath off the octopus reg (the long hose). You should only need 50Bar to accomplish this, certainly a lot less once you have done it a few times and have the method you like down pat. Hope this helps. Not to watch the rest of the vlog....It was great that you kept the other 10" wheel. I think you need to clean that anchor well while you're there Fabio. Fair 💨's and Following 🌊's.
@HarborsUnknown8 ай бұрын
Great advice as usual. I have done that for friends who had a stuck anchor, we felt that the anchor was slowly coming up without getting wet so we persisted. 😊😊 all stainless needs cleaning 😂😂😂 Being a bit lazy 🤣

How was that pork? Was it hunted or raised? Glad you had a spare gypsy. I'm sure it's challenging to decide what to spare and what isn't worth the money and weight to spare with the plan to improvise.
@HarborsUnknown8 ай бұрын
The pork was delicious. The hills are full of feral pigs. They were introduced by the first Polynesian settlers with chicken and dogs. Later the European introduced goats which now roam abundant. These wild animals are a source of food for the locals. Hunting them is a strong tradition and serves as population control. We are learning that we need all spares for critical systems. It takes a while to learn what is critical 😂😂 You are correct, it’s a delicate balance with cost and weight 😊😊 Thanks for watching and for you continued support 🙏🙏
