Been paraplegic for over 30 years, since the ripe old age of 17. I've had different jobs/women/goals in life, and still feel like I haven't done as much as I could (or should?). First thing I had to do was accept the shitty situation, and make the best with what I have. Claw my way out of that hole. Doesn't mean I haven't strived to walk again, or that I'll ever quit, but I haven't forgotten that life is about so much more than that! Gotta make the most of it.

Thank you for this podcast Jocko. In the last couple years I've had a career-ending accident, started a new career, divorced my unfaithful wife, moved to a new community and learned to "co-parent." Life has been a continual "reality check," and the potential for a pity party has always lurked around the corner. Through conscious choices and thoughts, I've stayed focused on my true reality, and been thankful that I've landed on my feet in spite of things looking entirely different than what I'd planned years ago. This podcast was a nice booster shot for my emotional/psychological immune system. Thank you.

I recall laying in a hospital bed with a broken back at 17, trying to wrap my head around it. When the nurses wheeled a 21 year old who recently broke his neck. After watching the man break down in tears because he couldn't scratch his nose, the thought of feeling sorry for myself just disappeared. I still think about that day, especially when I feel like giving up or throwing a pity party. Reality can definitely suck sometimes, but it doesn't get any better until we work to improve it. Keep rockin'!

So true. Not accepting reality is a killer. Those looping thoughs of "what if I had done this" "what if I had not done this." "What if I never met this person." Will freaking kill you. Yet it's so hard to snap out of those loops and accept that it's done. All those what ifs are bullshit. In fact I try to get into the habit of replacing the words "what if" with "bullshit" in my mind. So whenever those thoughts come up. They are quickly shutdown.
@jzen14552 жыл бұрын
I have a tendency to ruminate about the most mundane sh!t. It's weird, sometimes minor sleights get really under my skin for hours or even days while certain major sleights slide off my like Teflon. What helps to orient my mindset towards accepting reality for what it is (instead of lamenting reality for what it's not) is to remind myself that the world is like one massive complex video game with certain preset parameters that dictate every reaction to everying action. In the game Mario Bros, if you collide with a Goomba you shrink or die. That's the reality of the game and no amount of yelling or complaining will change that reality. In the real world, if you say something to someone in a certain way, they will react in a preset manner based on their genes and experiences. Some reactions will be disgustingly upsetting, some will be delightful, and induce many other reactions. Fixating on how others ought to react to you will just drive you insane. People will do as they will. Many of us are obsessed with what ought be or "if only...." scenarios while paying little mind to cultivating their best selves, not taking things so personally, accepting reality, and allowing the chips fall where they may.

I'm in no position to lecture any other human, and would never try, but what helps me has two primary primary points of view. 1.) Learn from past mistakes and successes, but do not dwell on them because it is tomorrow (and next decades) that you can have an impact on going forward. 2.) Only you are in control of your mind, if you cannot control that you will not be able to control anything. Take it or leave it, no warranty is implied.

I like how you say you're 100% in control of you're response. Responding vs reacting means not getting caught up by the moment, and seeing it for what it is, not what you wish it to be. As a parent this can be difficult, and I struggle to do it all the time, but it's helped me a lot thinking about things like this. Thank you for sharing stoked to listen to the rest of the podcast.

Your reality is just that, yours and only yours . So many people listen to what is expected of them through the eyes of others. Then they start making excuses and playing the blame game which turns them into the victim. My late husband, a Marine Corp Vietnam combat vet would always say overcome and persevere in situations where he thought he failed. In my eyes he never failed. He's been gone for 6 years and I can still hear him say " Failure isn't in my vocabulary. That's just an excuse for giving up". His middle name was Louis, names after Chester Puller.

Staying in the loop of "what ifs" is a 1 way ticket to self-destruction. Alcoholism, drug abuse, stress, anger, strained personal relationships, etc. It's tremendously difficult, but if you accept you can grow and thrive. If you don't accept you are dead-ending your own life.
@jzen14552 жыл бұрын
Or the "If only....." or "Why are they acting that way and not this way!?!?!" loops. People will act how they will act based on numerous factors including their genes and past experiences. Fixating on how they ought to react is a recipe for frustration as reality will be what it is. Much of social media posts are based on the mindset of "If only the world operated how I see fit, it would be awesome" and the frustrations born from the disconnect between expectations and reality. They desperately want to control the uncontrollable. It's a no-win mindset.

I took 277 volts at 30 amps up my leg and out my arm working under the instruction of a city engineer. I heard the wireman I was working with died from a heart attack ladder which can happen to electrical workers who get zapped too much. Your entire immune system can go out of phase. I went from waking up at 4am every day and working out etcetera to not being able to use my legs while electrical burns slowly moved around my body. It was the most horrible pain I ever imagined possible. I still get PTSD and frustration. I miss walking I miss my ability to walk without pain. I had one worker tell me I was just cooked from the inside out and I have to live with it. I was 29 and my life collapsed. What was crazy was it never should of happened just so someone could save time by putting someone elses lives at risk. I am trying so hard to move on but this could kill me if they don't figure out how to treat it. So I will be another skilled electrical workers lost to poor leadership decisions. Ok ok extreme ownership that's right... right.

I am 23 years old college student (accounting major). When I was 14 years old I lost my vision in my left eye due to retina detachment. That is not the worst part. I also have really bad night blindness where I need someone to actually hold my hand and walk me to my seat when I go to a movie theater. I can’t drive because my field vision sucks. Whenever I get invited to a party. It’s always at night. So that means I can’t go because I couldn’t see very well. But during day time I am perfectly fine, I do BJJ, basketball, and football. My vision impairment really took my confidence. Especially when it comes to dating or making friends. Whenever a girl asks me to hang out. I feel nervous and insecure because I couldn’t take her out on date nights or drive. People always want to hang out at night or go on dates at night. But due to my night blindness, I couldn’t do those fun things. I mean technically I can do it as long as the person I am with agrees to hold my hand but I don’t want to feel like a burden. But I accepted my situation. I am not going to lie. There are days that I wish I could drive and go out at night by myself. Thanks for this podcast Jocko !

I thank my god every night that my life is peaceful right now. I have seen quite the opposite for most of my life up until 4 years ago. An angry drunk dad, mom who didn’t stand up for me/my sister, bullying at school, severe OCD/anxiety. My mom and I finally found relief by moving to another state, then after a year my dad shows up at the door demanding to live in the house he helped buy (instead of staying in a sober home up north). He was still drinking, parents still fighting constantly, then my sister moves in with her 40 year old boyfriend, they’re fighting, she’s fighting me because I don’t want him living with us… couple years later I’m in an abusive relationship, takes me a year to leave him… wind up in another one 4 years later.. leaves after 6 months… a year later, here I am now. I never accepted my reality, I always just tried to escape it. My memory is so fucked up, I can’t remember most of my life. I was disassociated. I am still so hopeful. Hopeful for better days to come. I know they won’t always be good so I’m really relishing in them when they are. My best friend’s mom is a drug addict homeless in Los Angeles, and she is constantly in this painful reality. There’s not much she can do because her mom wants to be on the street. I don’t know what to say to her most days to help her find peace.. I wish someone could tell her how. If there even is a way.

Correct. It’s a legal construct. Under the M’Naghten Rule test, the criminal defendant must either not understand what he or she did, or be unable to distinguish right from wrong. This test relies on the notion that defendants may be diseased such that they are incapable of understanding their own actions.
