It should go down... when water freezes it increases in volume, so when it melts we should have less volume.

Total volume of ice and water, yes. The question is about water level. Only part of the ice cubes are in the water and because of physics, the volume of water that's displaced by the ice will be the volume of water to make the same weight as the object. When the ice melts it will turn into water and hence fill the exact amount of space already displaced, so same water level.

Ice is 10% less Dence than water. It floats showing 10% of its volume above water. As it melts the water levels stay relatively similar. Portraying the are the same type of water is salt content. Guess Where and at what level I study??

Uhhh isnt the density of ice less than water? Because we know that water expands when frozen as a unique quality. Meaning when it melts the volume will decrease?

@@matthewbeasley2336 yea but the amount of water is denser than ice will also melt and add tonthe water level so the level will go down a little. ..

@@leif1075 ice is less dense than water but when it melts it becomes water so changes to the same density as water

I believe that's actually wrong - it would go down. Volume determines displacement, and since ice is actually less dense than water (due to the nature of the bonding) - the increase in density would be balanced by a decrease in volume (since the mass is constant) hence the volume should decrease.

But doesn't water expand when it freezes? So the displacement caused by the ice in the water would be more than when it melts back into water?

We have a given mass of substance in the cup. We can clearly see that ice is less dense that water as it floats in water. Density = mass / volume Density increases from ice to water phase change and mass stays constant so volume must decrease. Therefore, the water level decreases overall when the Ive melts.

Some of the ice is out of the water when it floats so this method doesn’t work, you need to use archimedes principle
@pawandesilva
@pawandesilva 7 ай бұрын
@@projam7534That makes a lot more sense actually as I didn’t ever consider the parts of the floating ice that is not submerged by the water. I don’t think I covered Archimedes principle in my time of school because I didn’t do A-Level Physics so I went for a more simple GCSE approach to the question. Thanks for the correction!

Eh!! The water level would increase,reason being;the object (ice) isn't fully immersed to enable it float;so the volume of water displaced is equal to that occupied by the floating object;so what of the outer bit of the ice which isn't immersed?? It's the one leading to an increase in volume, however it is considered negligible due to absorbed heat as u insert/pour the ice cube into the glass

@noonneel
@noonneel Жыл бұрын
bro your answer is wrong ice is floating over water, meaning you need to work with density density is inversly proportional to volume , therefore water in ice form occupies more volume and when melted its density increases , volume falls and water lever decreases

But won’t their be discrepancies in molecular energies? And does ice not take up more volume than water because of its lower density due to its more crystal like structure?

@fab as it has got nothing to do with molecular energies but mainly it has got things with displacement theory where it is said that weight of water = weight of ice and when the ice will melt into water it will occupy the space in water which ice created in initial stage by displacing water into sides and causing it to increase the volume of water in first stage while dropping ice cube in the water but when its completely melted The volume of water won't change it will remain same!
