I’ve been looking for the answer to this question forever! So I’m an art major, and I was thinking about minoring in scientific illustration for my bachelor’s. Will a minor be enough for a job in the field if I end up getting my Master’s degree in something that isn’t scientific illustration? (I’m probably going to get my Master’s in education, but I’m torn between the fields). Thanks! Great video!

Hi Emily, glad the video helps. To start earn money from you art, you only need a good portfolio to show your clients. Who your clients are will most likely related to the network you are in. From my experience, my work experience in science has been the key factor of my client source.

I am a doctor and I am just finishing residency, but I did study product design before (although I did not finish the course). I really want to make the switch into medical illustration, but since I am not near any of the institutes that offer these graduate programs, that would mean investing an insane amount of money for more education when I just finished a nine year long education.. hahahaha I am really not sure if it would still be worth investing that much money, time and moving abroad for it...

You can start to be an artist today. A degree is not necessary.

Thanks for the useful video! What basic software a beginner scientific illustrator needs to know to get a job? Adobe illustrator, Photoshop, Maya?
@DrawBioMed4 жыл бұрын
Hi Margarita, happy to know you find my experience helpful. Adobe Illustrator is the skill I'd like to see when I hire contractors. Medical Illustration you need to know photoshop. For applying master programs you must be able to draw in traditional media e.g. pencil, watercolor. Best way to figure this out is to look at the scientific illustrator recruitment ads on LinkedIn and see which skills they are looking for. I wish I had done this research while I was study! It would've made my life so much easier.

Hi Asaad, you can start with still live drawings. Observation is important in medical illustration.

Hi there. This was a very informative video... I am a veterinarian and have practiced for over 20 years now. In all honesty I've always sort of wished I had gone into a more art-based / creative career field. I studied art in HS and college and have always taken classes a local art museum. I'm a little "trapped" in my current career being a mom and a practice owner so formal education would not be an option currently but would LOVE to get into the world of medical illustration. What would be your recommended first steps to start getting into this field without pursuing a degree? Thanks so much, I really think this would be a good fit for me.

I’m curious - would the doctors who do scientific illustration as a side hustle still be able to become a certified scientific illustrator? (Eg. They don’t have a master’s degree in scientific illustration, but would be willing to take the board exam to become AMI certified.) And how would being certified vs not certified affect your pay, job prospects, etc? I had the impression that this field is very niche and highly regulated since you have to do continuing education, boards exams and license renewals, similar to what many doctors must do to keep practicing.

Hi Pearl, I suggest you can ask @learnmedicalart about it through instagram DM. AMI is a certificate in the USA, so I am not familiar with it.
