@@PeterJohnBolgert It's because the story arc of the challenge is weird. There's a rising action in the first act, so to speak, until rockets. Then there's another rise from Claire until the elite 4. Then there's a drastic fall in Kanto. Then a huge rise for Blue and Red. It just doesn't work well.

Funny to think that ponyta doesn’t learn anything new until level 30 because you can’t catch them lower than 28. So a level 5 ponyta shouldn’t exist in gen 1. Pokemon has become so much of a strategic battler collectathon that we can forget how gen 1 was a much simpler RPG adventure.

@@stevenclark5173 Normal types were way more powerful than psychic, moves accuracy is way more realistic (why a move would never miss, lol), attacks like fire spin compensates with low pp and damage so i wouldnt recommend it, and i agree with focus energy being one of the few real flaws (although not an attack that you really need). Even if all of that was true it still wouldnt be bad. Being incredible revolutionary and still playable and yet is a portable game released in 1996. If its a bad game for having some few unbalanced aspects then Final Fantasy is bad, Earthbound is bad, Chrono Trigger is bad, etc...

I have watched a video talking about this idea recently and I remember that video says that it is impossible to not encounter a glitch. Basically in the introduction of the game, there is a nidorino shown and the game plays nidorina’s cry instead of nidorino’s cry. (Also I saw jrose’s comment in that video and he said he does not want to attempt this)

there's a video on lowest percent about this. i would argue the wrong cry being used in the intro is not a glitch since it's the game acting directly how it's programmed, they just used the wrong cry sound ID. but everything else is solid

Awesome to see you back! I think Bellsprout would be a fun run to see. It has very limited attacking moves, but it gets both Growth (at Level 1!) and Swords Dance. Also, I feel like maybe skipping the Agility on Gyarados and just trying to 2HKO with Body Slam may have been a more consistent option.

Only possible reason would be if the Dragonair has Thunder Wave (making it too risky to set up on, as even though Agility bypasses the Thunder Wave speed drop you still have a 25% chance of not moving each turn) but I don't think it does. So if he has to set up Agility it would be much better on Dragonair and instead go straight for Body Slam on Gyarados.

I nearly beat red at minimum battles with Bellsprout, jrose style. Final moveset was growth/sleep powder/mimic/acid, if I remember correctly. The early game is pretty tough, until you get through Mt. Moon. First bug catcher has the most resets, you have to hope that it just keeps using string shot. Can take a while, but growth really helps. I got stuck on the Elite 4. It seemed very doable, I just didn't have the resources. And I kept getting frozen by the damn lapras. Lorelei is easy if you don't get frozen. Bruno is Bruno. Agatha depends a bit on sleep luck. I mimicked dream eater and put them to sleep with sleep powder. As long as you hit with sleep powder, Agatha isn't tough at all. There's just a lot of little luck things with Agatha and Lorelei, I swear I got frozen by ice beam 5 times in a row before I rage quit. As long as the gyrados doesn't use hyper beam, you should be able to take it down though.

Gen 2 has so much going against it when it comes to these challenge videos. The rival fights are all easy save Azalea town, the rocket plotline is a slog, and the kanto boss rush is usually incidental at best. It's a real shame, Johto is my favorite region.

as another gen 1 fun fact, you WERE safe against rhydons fissure but not for the reason you think. the level check for ohko moves was a gen 2 in addition. in gen 1, the moves instead always have 30% accuracy, but do an extra check. if the targets speed stat (and thats actual speed, not base speed) is higher than the user's, ohko moves will fail. this is particularly funny because as far as i can tell the only time youll see the ai use pokemon with these moves is rhydon (giovannis and the rivals) who are crazy slow. typical gen 1 design though in that sense.

I think I know what pokemon will dethrone mewtwo. The crit specialist. The most forgotten pokemon in all these runs. Victreebel. Starting the game with sleep/stun spore abuse, and the guaranteed crit of Razor leaf. Brock and Misty get obliterated in record time. All the random trainers? One hit. Swords dance plus body slam or wrap takes care of any grass resist. Lets go for our grassy lad!

I agree that gen 2 is pretty lackluster but I actually really like gen 5. I thought the Pokémon variety and quality was great, the quality of life changes like reusable TMs, refreshing repels, and abilities being improved were really nice. The story wasn’t anything to write home about, but having the character of N go through a lot of development was pretty neat. Team plasma themselves were pretty boring but ghetsis and N were strong characters

In the grand scheme of things you're right, but for Pokemon standards the story was outstanding. I think Galactic was the most interesting game (just because they didn't even have the same goal as their boss, it was all a lie) but Plasma wasn't bad by any means. Especially the way they're introduced and then the first encounters with their grunts doing bad stuff. It felt more warranted than Rockets "eh, we're gangsters here" or Galactic's "we kidnapped this man and are using him as a slave because reasons"

Your "Can you beat" series has been great, dude! Glad to have you back again. In fact, you actually inspired me to finally try one of my own, with Tentacool! I had to do it on emulator but I self imposed all of your rules onto myself + no save states and no speedup to protect the IGT. It has been such a wild ride, especially the early game and then the E4. I got an end game time of 5:09 and Tentacool ended at level 59, fighting B(my Blue) freshly at level 58. You could make a good video for it, if you can stand the RNG in the early game. I wonder how you'd rank it; while my IGT and level beats Mankey and in practice it is quite a self sufficient battler with a great BBG move in Barrier covering its low defense, it's countered by the fact that unless you grind out levels you cannot beat Brock or Misty w/o near perfect Supersonic luck and at least some lucky Acid defense drops, and since I opted for no wild grinding, there were plenty of IRL hours of resetting on those two, mainly Misty cuz I lucked out pretty early with Brock. It doesn't even learn Water Gun until 22 and it can't abuse something like Wrap + Screech until 40, and the 2nd best thing, Acid + Wrap, is about as inconsistent as Supersonic thanks to bad accuracy, not to mention all of this becomes unnecessary once you get Bubblebeam from Misty. Quick note on OHKO moves in Gen 1, it's not based on level like later gens, but rather the Pokemon's current speed. The pokemon using the OHKO move must be able to outspeed its target, otherwise the "pokemon is unaffected" message will appear. If the Pokemon using the OHKO move does outspeed, then it'll factor in the move's usual OHKO % chance to hit. It's actually why the Gambler in the Stadium 1 Prime Cup tends to use moves that either slow your pokemon down or speed his up in conjunction with OHKO moves. Great video!

These are some of my favorite runs to watch. A pokemon like Ponyta isn't immediately thought to be some crazy insane S+ tier but it's also not one you really think of being bad either. I think it's more interesting to see where average pokemon struggles or succeeds VS an obviously great or obviously bad pokemon where it's a bit more expected.

Jrose, I think you made the E4 a lot harder than it needed to be. You always used agility against Gyarados, but judging by how much damage body slam was doing (even at level 75ish) after one agility, it would've been a 2HKO without the badge boost from agility. Pretty sure you only needed to tank one hydro pump, not two. If you really needed the agility, using it against dragonair would have been a lot more consistent, imo. I'm thinking Ponyta might've been in a higher tier if you got past Gyarados earlier. Anyways, love the vids, keep em coming!
