I used mine on a commercial flight to Florida with permission from the pilot. Made some high altitude contacts on VHF simplex :D

FYI, I brought over my Yaesu FT-950 to Korea, using Delta airlines. I had it packed in the original box with original packing. It came double-boxed to me, and I also shipped in the box the same way on the plane. It counted as one checked baggage item.. It arrived safely. I have also brought two 12mHD Spiderbeam poles with me to Korea, using United airlines, and the two shipping boxes that the Spiderbeam 12mHD poles were shipped in, fit allowance within a few inches, when taped together as one. No additional fees. It counted as one checked bag.

San Antonio, Tx. they had me pull my HT out and show them that it was operational and wanted to see my FCC License as well. After that it was all good. I did go though the Pre-check line and was a random carry on x ray. The agent did have to call over a supervisor to see if it was ok for me to have a radio with a license from the FCC and he told both of us that yes with a license in possession it was allowed, so just back stop yourself and make sure you have your wallet card with you. Your mileage may vary...

Wow! That's interesting. I'm surprised they went that far. Good info though, thanks.

That was back in May of this year, just about the time they started doing the increased scrutiny for all travelers...

I have taken my dual band Yaesu on several commercial flights. I purchased a small padded handgun bag at Wal-Mart to transport the radio. Plenty of pockets for cables, antenna and spare batteries.

Are you allowed to use a short wave radio?

one airline I took mine on requested the battery be removed and put in your check in bag...I only had this issue with one airline and it was philippine airline. Out of manila and in Korea they tried to destroy the battery pack. I recommend taking the battery off.

Great info! I've never flown but know I will in a year or two and will be wanting to take along my 857D and several antennas. Do you have a link to the bag/case you are using for your Elecraft? I have a few like that but nothing that large, I like it.

I have taken my radio in travel many times. No hassle. I can use it in the airport. No issues. Have only used it on a flight 1ce, it was a private flight - I had permission from the pilot.

Can u take a radio scanner such as a sds100 on the plane and use it? Could you imagine the police departments and etc u could hear up there

Turn off any electronics in flight, except for Flight mode built in: Phones, tablets and laptops. You can’t use RTL SDR in flight.

If I saw someone take out a giant ass radio on a plane I think I'd freak out and think they're about to detonate a bomb or something

Would I be able to take my Hanhel CB Radio and my Baofang on a flight?
@FrancisLitanofficialJAPINOY3 жыл бұрын
Yes. It must be strictly turned off. Disconnect antennas and put in a small pouch inside carry on bag. Battery terminals must taped with electrical tape for safety. Mine, I brought Baofeng radio, took off PTT and Call buttons, but on stopver in Hong Kong, UK, Japan, Philippines, Taiwan and Canada.
@FrancisLitanofficialJAPINOY3 жыл бұрын
Cruise ship might confiscate Baofeng or CB radios and any kind of Transmitters like FM transmitters. You can pick up confiscated items prior to arrival at the final port at the end of cruise.

Just letting you know, If you have your licence and get permission from the Pilot in charge then there is no problem with using a radio on a commercial flight
