Before watching... I'd like to say that this is a great topic. I have my 3 watch collection all set. 1. Your favorite diver. 2. Seiko 5 on a leather strap 3. Timex Weekender with lots of NATO. However, a five watch collection adds to the all around dynamic.

Great list! I think a $100 Gshock and $115 Bambino is a no brainer these are excellent! the Kamasu ($175) is a winner. I would also go for a Seiko SNA411Pilot's Flight Alarm Chronograph at $250 It also shares the 21mm strap size so you can share with the Bambino. or get a Seiko SRPA27 $150 instead of the bambino great price right now.

This is my list: 1. Diver: From Ebay New Seiko Samurai 250.00 ( you can find them probably cheaper second hand on eBay if you really look and have patience) 2. Seiko Flight Master (Flighty) Quartz Jomashop 220.00 3. Seiko 5 Sport SNZ Field watch 120.00 4. Casio G Shock : Amazon DW5600e 41.00 5. Orient Bambino: Amazon 113.00 Total: 744.00 Also you don't need to spend a grand. A nice diver and nice field watch with a nice not so busy dial can be dressed up with a nice leather band or tone it down with a leather or cloth Nato strap.

It's a nice collection of watches. For me the weak spot is the Bambino with it's highly domed thus very exposed mineral crystal. Why not change it for one of the various Aliexpress dress watches with better specs from Cadisen, Reef Tiger or Carnival? Whith the Kamasu there is another Orient watch in the collection anyway.

The bambino is just a classic entry level dress watch. Being so affordable and coming in so many different styles plus coming from orient which is one of the cheapest options for an in house movement, it's the perfect watch to recommend a new collector. And like he said in the video, it's a dress watch, not a beater lol. Some people like the look of the domed crystal, I personally think it looks really cool.

Great collection, great choices. Looking forward to the review of the Escapement Time flieger. About the Bambino as a scratch magnet: that watch is made to be worn under a cuff, so if you use it as it is designed to be used, you shouldn't have problems. I have three (v2, v3, small seconds), but I go hiking with a Casio, and for playing with my daughter I have some Chinese specials with sapphire crystal!

Great effort, Shane. I guess I have totally given up on trying to keep a lid on my collection. I guess the things I am drawn to are watches that lean towards the pilot aesthetic and divers. I was extremely fortunate to have gotten my Citizen Nighthawk while the price was still somewhat civilized. I can't believe what they have been going for the past year on Amazon. Wild variations that end up around $300 ($297.99 @ 3/14/21). Not sure I would pay that if I didn't already have one. But, I think you are absolutely correct going heavy with the Orient brand. They are stepping into the area that was once owned by Seiko. With Seiko seemingly willing to abdicate that area of the market. This is really not a bad time to be "into" watches. There are some really good deals out there, if you just look.

If you have the extra cash, the colareb napoli makes a fantastic 21mm leather strap for the bambino. They're typically somewhere around $90 and I understand that can be hard to justify for a watch that's under $200, but if you really like your bambino and want it to be the best it can be, colareb is the way to go.

Shane, I was watching this year old video of yours again because it just came up from the home page and when I started thinking I realized I had in some variation 4 of the 5 watches (sort of) already. No Vostok at all. But I have the exact Escapement Time flieger, same V2 Bambino white dial rose gold, just the basic G-Shock 5600 g but should have gotten the solar Bluetooth radio version) and two Orient Mako USA 2 colors that is a close cousin to the Kamasu. Of course the Mako USA 2 is not available and unfortunately has no after market straps available but I got them for $200 each. Don't plan to get a Vostok but you could switch in Pagani Design PD-1644 with white dial and you would have a chronic. No wonder I like your channel so much.

My 5/3/2 watch collections always start with the Casio World Time. Quartz? Yes. Sports? Yes. GMT? Yes. Chrono? Yes. Alarms? Yes. Good Backlight? Yes. It doesn't look very fancy and it's no dedicated diver with lume, but that's kind of it. Also doesn't really impact the budget at all. For the second watch, you can combine diver&pilot with the Vostok Komandirskie 650840 (there are other colours if you don't like the red). Or, if you just want the high WR and don't need a bezel you can also pick the Escapement Time mentioned here, or the Steeldive/Addiesdive Fliegers. For my third pick, I'll go for a cheap sporty dress watch (or dressy sports watch?) and just take the Pagani Design Mecha Quartz PD-1654 or if I want something more minimalistic the Starking BM0965 ultra thin sapphire dress watch. Now, that's 20€ + 60-90€ + 20-30€ = ~120€ for a reliable three watch collection without any huge follow-up service costs.

Thanks for the shout out. Love your picks, and the process on how you narrowed the field. That vostok is atypically alluring 👍. Interestingly no seiko pieces, whom traditionally dominated the entry level. Is it your subjective choice, or are they simply not budget friendly anymore? I would swap the bambino, "babying" a watch to make sure it doesnt scuff seems impractical.
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 3 жыл бұрын
No problem. In some ways I think Seiko has sort of priced themselves out. This was actually the second set I came up with. The first one I had the grey Seiko DressKX in place of the bambino. They are going for around $250+ still just for the watch, let alone an additional strap. Which made it a bit harder to pick out a good 5th watch.

@@timedrightwatches7999 There were a couple I was thinking of. One was a Cadisen watch I called the Cadisen Imperial but looks like you can't find it anymore. I was also thinking Chronos, so I was looking at Timex Weekender or the Timex Fairfleid supernova. For some reason, those are dirt cheap now. Although the collection didn't seem quite as balanced with the dresskx taking up so much of the budget.

I've always liked Ali watches, I just haven't been covering them as much. Part of that is lack of time. It seems like I spend at least 10-15hrs per video (not very efficient), and I can only do so much. The other reason is that for a while I never saw anything I quite liked. I'd look every couple of months and see the same dress watches from Starking, Cadisen, and Guanqin. So after a bit I stopped paying attention. Some point after that newer brands started popping up with some more interesting choices, like Steel Dive. As well as San Martin went from "Your crazy to spend that much" to "Best Bang for your buck!" I'm still surprised to see as many San Martin videos coming out as their are. When I put out that flieger video way back when, it seemed like most people had never heard of them.
@HonestWatchReviewsHWR

@@RelativeTime That makes sense. I'm beginning to get to that point myself now. Too many watches, not enough time. First World problems hey? I know what you mean about things got a bit stale for a while. I didn't have a channel back then, but I was buying quite a few Ali watches, and it felt like I got to the point where I had all the good ones, and was waiting for something new and different to come out. San Martin really do make some quality pieces. They just need to work on the branding a bit though. They seem to have a new logo for each watch lately. The other thing with them is that their prices are getting a little steep for the Ali model I think. They should probably consider becoming a proper Microbrand at this point perhaps. As I can't see them reducing their prices again now.

@RelativeTime

I don't like the design quite as much, but that was done due to the new movement. Which is also the big advantage that the defender 2 has. Adds hacking, and hand-winding. So for me, that alone is worth it. The hands are also a little different. Partly skeletonized, and a little more aviation like. Which I think I like better. Especially the skeletonized bit as it doesn't obstruct the subdials as much. Also love the red tipped second hand that the original didn't have. That macro shot at 00:49 looks great.

Good choices with the exception of the Bambino. I know mine is an unpopular opinion, but i cannot give the title "dress" to a watch that is 42mm and has a date window. Especially when in most Bambinos the date windows are terribly incorporated, thus make the watches suffer aesthetically. And aesthetics is where a dress watch must shine. I'd suggest Vostok Classica instead. Check them out, they are great and big enough to be considered modern dress watches without being oversized.

Obviously the G-shock is a GMT too. Just a digital one. Also a dive watch if you think about it. So in fact you're covering three in one (quartz, GMT, diver/beater). So no need for the Vostok. The Bambino actually is a nice dress watch and casual watch. For the flieger I would go with the Citizen AW1360-12H. Yes it's not a real flieger but close enough and very practical. And if you want to be really cheeky, get the Nighthawk as that would be a pilot's watch and GMT. So with only three watches I would cover all the basics. And would leave more money for something a bit more special. Like my Zelos Blacktip Frost or the bronze 40mm Swordfish for $299! (Except I ordered the 22mm bronze bracelet for it as well for $200, so that's a bit of cheating).

@@RelativeTime You considered a GMT, Flieger, dress, diver, ... but no Gyrotourbillon Perpetual calendar with Minute Repeater, that is basic in any watch collection. For just $800.000 you can have this kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXTNh6qImbFrn8U

My dude, a $30 strap on a $90 watch is NOTHING. I wore a $70 Barton on a $40 Starking for a long time. It was ridiculous, but they really worked well together, it was a good look.

I've heard that. When I put out the review on the Chrono version, I sent them a message linking it and asking for more information about them. All I got back was a "Thank You". So not quite sure they understood what I was asking. I'll try again sometime. I'm really curious to know more about him/them.

I think I've seen that, plus most of them are Seikos. I think I should try to put together another collection, but with no divers. Although still have few with good water resistance.

@@RelativeTime No divers in a collection would make WIS heads explode. "How can I time how long it takes the pizza guy to get here?! M'PASTA! Grrrrrrrrr!" I can absolutely appreciate a screw down crown and water resistant but divers, as a whole, are chunky, ugly and don't _slip right under my chuff in donkeys ages._ Happy to see some non divers with screw down crowns becoming more plentiful in the market (RZA Resolute, Traska Commuter/Summiter, Mitch Mason Chronicle, etc.)

meanwhile i am in the conundrum of all i want is the casio duro but with the best lume in the world. that's it. a $40 casio duro with the absolute best lume that exists. i want that watch. it doesn't exist. how can i get it?
@RelativeTime
@RelativeTime 3 жыл бұрын
You could always buy a duro and try to apply extra lume to it, but that's going to cost a bit more then $40. Unless you are dead set on the Duro design, my best bet would be to take a look at the citizen eco-drive Promaster. BN0151-09L kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWS8Zqqen8t9mqM Really fantastic lume, and every so often Amazon has them on sale. I've seen them down to around $100 before.

@@RelativeTime your response is partly indicative of why yours is my favorite watch channel and you are my favorite reviewer. i have that promaster. snagged it for just under $100. i think this was based on your thoughts about a year ago or so. one of my '5 watch collection' of a vostok, g shock, duro, promaster, and the invicta sub looking thing. the duro is just my favorite all time watch. it's very well built, looks great, fits me perfectly, bezel works pretty good, i really like the movement so far as it is pretty accurate, reliable, and always hits the indices dead on... and all that considering it costs $40 ish.. the only thing i don't like is the lume. i've considered trying to apply lume myself and very briefly looked into paying someone to. it just seems as though after paying $100 ish to have it lumed, the appeal of the watch would fade a bit seeing as how it's now 'expensive' in my taste. but that may be how i'll go. gotta figure out how to go about it first. thanks for your very logical, very well informed advice.
