For anyone wondering, the GK64 is not a well designed board. Adding arrow keys to the 60% layout makes for odd rows and key sizes (like the small r shift key). Also it has no pcb mountable stab holes for the Left shift. Also the left shift is 2u size, so again non standard. Also as Linus found out, if you're using a hot swap board... check the pins are straight first.
@Figureight6 жыл бұрын
Also anyone wondering about cost. You can build these things for WAY cheaper. The Tina case is a pretty expensive case, there are cheaper aluminium or wood options. Or even cheaper plastic options. Linus used Cherry switches, and there are way better value for money switches out there from Gateron and Kailh (seriously, Cherry does not mean the best, just because it's the original). The MX switch top removal tool can be made with a couple of binder clips and some pliers, and Linus paid top money for those springs. However, yes custom boards can cost more money (although sometimes you can build interesting things on a budget), but the reason why so many of us do it is because you can get exactly what you want out of a keyboard, and when you start looking at the variety of switches, layouts, styles, keyboard sizes and all these other things available, you will start to realise there are far more typing experiences out there than what you get with some stock prebuilt board with some cherry switches in them.

What's the difference in price when soldering yourself?
@foshiz976 жыл бұрын
Hardly any difference. You just give yourself more options in terms of pcb's which means more layouts/features. Hot swap pcb's, like the one he used, aren't too common. The pcb he bought was $39 while there's another 60% layout, from the same website, that's $33. The $33 one lacks per key rgb, but does have rgb underglow. If your worried about price, I would say Linus spent more than he had to. You may have already figured that out from other comments though.
@bbbb-mj7hd6 жыл бұрын
As foshiz97 said, the price is not the issue but rather the availability. I know of like 2 or 3 hot swap PCBs thats easy to get a hold of, and all of them are non-standard in some way. The one used in the video has a pretty strange layout. While it is nice that it supports arrow key-cluster while still being 60% size, that means that the left-shift is only 2 units long. This severely limits the options for key cap sets, as most have the standard 2.5 unit shift key. If you know what switch you want and dont plan to change it, its better to just get another PCB and solder it. If you on the other hand like to change switches often, hot swap might be worth it despite the layout.

The point is that the quality is magnitudes greater than most prebuilt boards.

Funnily enough, I got into the mechanical keyboard thing not because i wanted a better typing experience or anything but wanted to customize my keyboard layout. It's basically what Linus said at the end there, "uniquely ours" (I use a variation of what is usually called a "UNIX layout" popularized by the SUN type 6 and type 7 keyboards). The biggest issues for me where all the options, i was so paranoid about getting the wrong parts that won't fit together (less of a problem if you just want a normal layout these days, you can go for what is essentially a prebuilt - just need to pop in the switches and keycaps of your choice) and of course the money. It's a lot better now with the likes of keychron but you're still looking at 100s of dollars for a keyboard, more so if you want to do anything even remotely fun or unique with it. Things i wish i knew at the get go: the thing Linus mentioned about warranty - my first PCB essentially crapped out on me one day, and my only option was to troubleshoot myself and/or buy a new PCB and replace it (which, again, I have to do myself); and of course something a lot of people would tell you - get a hotswap. Especially as a starter, there are so many different switch options, and there's really no way to know for sure how something is going to feel or sound until you actually put things together and start typing (even something like the size/shape and material of the case will make a huge difference), there are youtube videos you could watch where someone records themselves typing with a particular build or switch or whatever but it's really not at all the same.

@WorBlux6 жыл бұрын
Look into wire wrap techniques.
@eideticex6 жыл бұрын
You might want to look into PCB fabrication. The Sodium Chloride method is fairly easy and produces something good enough for a keyboard. It's literally drawing on the board with marker, soaking it in the solution, washing it off and drilling holes for your pins and screws to go through. I would suggest at least a cheap Chinese PCB stencil tool to make sure you get nice clean lines on your board but it's not required if you have a steady hand and a lot of patience. For soldering there are many Hakko 936 knockoffs out there that are actually good. Aoyue (available through SRA soldering in the US) are my favorite but I've heard plenty good about Yishua as well. These irons make soldering a lot of pins a breeze. Just tape your components into place. Set the iron to 250C and go through the pins with some silver based solder. Shouldn't take any more than a second per pin thanks to the rapid thermal recovery of the 936 irons. Can go as high as 350C with a good tin-silver-copper solder before you start to see any notable degradation in the solder joints if you need a higher temperature for larger contacts (like common ground). Doing it all with snakes and wraps is kind of nuts. Unless your running shielded pairs for each key your going to wind up with a lot of cross chatter by time your done.

On Banggood you can get a GK61 which is basically the same PCB with a slightly different layout than the GK64, with an aluminum case for around $110 US or even lower since its on sale and new users get an additional $20 off and EVEN lower if you go with their wood or plastic case options which are all on sale as the time of this comment being posted. Settle on some HyperX PBT pudding key caps for around $25 on Amazon, buy some O rings as well on Amazon so you can take advantage of free shipping, and some Kailh box red switches from mechanical keyboards, 7 packs for around $32 with free shipping. You can spend as low as $115 if you choose to go the budget route before taxes and if you are patient enough you won't have to spend a single penny on shipping. $115 is bare bones if you choose to buy lube, brushes, opener tool, different set of springs, key switches or key caps the price will go up but at the end of the day if you must have a custom mechanical keyboard but are on a budget $300 + isn't what you have to spend.

Instead of looking for a PCB with hot-swap terminals you should have used the opportunity to tell your viewers that they should stop to freak out every single time they hear the word "soldering". Everyone without two left hands can do it after trying it for a few minutes. Even soldering SMD parts was much easier than I would have expected. Even my first result was more than just acceptable (of course with some normal soldering experience). Of course, hot-swap terminals make it easier to, well ... hot-swap switches later when you want to use different ones, but I would expect that most people would never do this and rather put the keyboard together and only open it if a switch got broken.
