I heard Texas and Oregon spent more. I believe it, too. So this coming from a Michigan fan. Ohio State did a better job keeping their players and filling the appropriate holes with the right amount of available funds. So they did better than anybody. Congratulations, Buckeyes.

You're going to have to spend in order to win. Look at the AP final poll and contrast it to the biggest NIL spends.

Ohio State retained their roster. 18 starters were recruited and signed out of high school. They were developed, grew up together and gelled as a team. Collectively they played a total of 580 games. NIL/transfer portal just so happens to be the world we live in now.

I want to know if the 2001 miami hurricanes didn't score a point on offense if they would still be 8 and 4. If that's right, the U needs that defense back right now.

As a Tennessee fan, I think can speak for at least most of us on a couple of things. One is that there is no universe in which we lived through roughly the 2007 - 2020 time period, a period of over a decade with an overall losing record, and don’t immensely appreciate where we are now, with an overall record of 30 - 9 in the last 3 years. We take nothing for granted, with the exception of some clownish, cocky, very loud, very obnoxious Tennessee fans who very much seem to have forgotten those years ever happened. They made their presence very well known leading up to the TENN / OSU playoff game. In any case though, our appreciation of where we are relative to where we were being what it is, we definitely expect more. Hanging everything on having a good defense while being content to watch a regression on offense compared to 2022 is not something we’re ok with. The offensive struggles were frustrating to watch, and I don’t think most of us saw this season come to a close for Tennessee feeling like the issues causing those struggles are in any way resolved. Fixing those issues is something that’s still ahead of us. And seeing them fixed is definitely an expectation. It’s not something that would just be a bonus. Seeing those struggles continue indefinitely is unacceptable. I expect better offensive production, and I believe Nico has more than enough unrealized potential to do his part in making that happen. There are definitely some among us who are ready to give up the guy. And while I’m not with those people, because it’s ridiculous, I am tired of just seeing glimpses of what he can be. Nico threw 19 TDs on the season. 8 of those came in the last 2 regular season games. One of those games, he had something like180 yards, give or take, in the first half. And the thing about it is that it wasn’t because he went crazy and played a ridiculous, electric 2 quarters of football. He just simply played better and did what he can do more consistently, and being on pace to throw for well over 300 yards in that game was the result. He made it look easy, like there was nothing remarkable about it. That’s what I want to see. Better, more consistent play from him, which I believe he can do, and better WR receiver play, among other things. Anyway, to answer your question. Major improvement on offense, much better offensive production is certainly an expectation among Tennessee fans.

They were saying they wasted the money before they turned up on my vols. Then they realized who they were and went on to dominate everyone. They spent alot yes but they really kept players and plugged holes.

The answer is no. You cannot buy a national championship. You have to recruit the right kind of players, who are willing to put in the work for multiple years, and stay committed to the process, and then when you’ve got enough of those guys, who are also talented enough for it to matter, and you have a roster built on those guys in every year class, stacked from freshmen to juniors, and then have a large portion of your draft eligible senior class, choose to return for one last year. The portal cannot be how you build your rosters. That shit will not work. You have to recruit the right caliber of players, who are also the right kind of people, year after year after year. It’s still the same as it always was. The returning senior classes have always had a major impact for the best recruiting teams. Look at Cam Newtons Auburn year. That wasn’t the most talent stacked team. But they had something like 22 or 23 returning seniors, and they had Cam add in as the cherry on top, who pushed that team over the top. It’s the same as it always was, there is just a lot more that the front offices and recruiting staffs will have to manage, in terms of who do you pay to keep and how much do you pay to which guys. But the foundation of the sport is largely still the same. You have to find and recruit the right caliber of players, and the right kind of people, and you have to be capable of inspiring them to stay committed to the developmental process. That takes more than what money alone can account for.

I have to disagree if you have the money you can keep your talent and having a team full of 5stars makes it a lot easier.

People seem to think there is a very short, very straight line connecting those dots. Pay big NIL money for a top recruiting class / Recruit star player or 2 - Win national championship Obviously it helps, but people acting like that’s all it takes, like if you do that it’s just a foregone conclusion, it’s just nonsense. Quite a few more dots to connect.

What have we got here? Just say a thing you want to be true and see if you can just will it so? Its season was, at best. But college football changes every year. That should be evident by the fact that Michigan won a national championship last year, and was horrendous and not even close to the playoffs this year, and by the fact that the national champion this year lost their bowl game to Missouri last year. The SEC didn’t have a great year, which means that now they only have 13 national championships in the last 19 years instead of the last 18 years. Mid.. it’s a joke.
