Update: I have a new course on Affinity Publisher: skl.sh/2L91Y07
Update: Affinity Publisher is now available for purchase and is ready for professional work.
Check out my courses on design: www.skillshare...
Is it time to ditch the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription for the single purchase Affinity apps?
The answer really depends on what you need to do. In this video I examine it from the perspective of only needing to use Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Can you replace them with Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher?

@@OurFantasyLife There are a number of good tutorials on Final Cut on KZbin. Once you get your head around the magnetic timeline you wonder why none else has come with the idea before. Then you discover background rendering and Premiere suddenly looks like a relic from the last century. Also have a look at DaVinci Resolve. It's very similar to Premiere with the big difference that it doesn't crash and flies through 4K footage. The grading functionality of Resolve runs circles around Premiere and best of all you can get a free version which does quite a lot.

I don't mind paying for software, I just don't want to pay an ongoing subscription for as long as I live. The subscription model can work if you are wanting to work full-time, doing tons of work and getting high cash flow. But not everyone fits into that category. By choice I do not. I have busy periods at certain times of the year and other project work.

Subscription is a way to make more money from users. On average, Adobe issues out 3 or 4 updates a year, with a new version 1 to 2 years with very little features added, sometimes a new version is all about connecting with its other products or a re-designed splash screen and tools moved around. So they need to wait until something happens with their software to make money. Now, with a subscription, all they do is charge everyone and create a new cash flow. I am so glad for Affinity taking on Adobe. Especially since Adobe killed off its competition, QuarkXPress, Macromedia (Aldus), CorelDraw and others. Subscription software was not Adobe's idea, it was Microsoft that fondled the idea first. They were not increasing sales (rich wants to get richer), after several Windows releases, especially Windows Vista, they noticed people were not upgrading to new versions - why? - there was no reason to switch or upgrade, nothing new or worth upgrading was added to Windows, so why switch. So, they announced Subscription Software in several press releases but because of the Federal Lawsuit and bad publicity they did not move forward. Yet, Adobe liked the idea and ran with it. Like most of us, we kept working with Adobe CS1 or with earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. It did the job, no need to update or upgrade. Despite all the new features, what we had, did the job, period. The only reason we would update or upgrade was when the Operating System could not support an older version of a program or application. We used to "own" to use the version we bought, now we "rent" or lease the software. Like an apartment, you stop paying rent, you lose the apartment. Adobe is now motivated by greed.

Subscription is lucrative to companies because it evens out cashflow. The apps do cost more in Adobe's case, but that's not mutually exclusive. See, when a company creates a new version of a peice of software, they need to research, understand and prioritise new features, market them and hope that they get it right and they sell the anticipated amount of seats. If they have a successful launch they get a big revenue spike, which effectively becomes the budget for the next version, as sales tail off towards the end of the release cycle (for obvious reasons, users expect new features) subscription allows a consistent stream of income and the idea is you can have more frequent releases and less need to drop loads of features every X years. It also means they can work through bug backlogs. All of this is in principle, of course. Adobe had initially intended to have a much better release cadence with their products when CC came around, buy have so far struggled to manage it. I think it's a mixture of complacency, ageing codebases in a lot of their apps and the need to divert resources to new avenues as their current core market is pretty saturated. All that being said, subscriptions aren't fun and Adobe ultimately do not deliver enough value for the cost of creative cloud. A great example of a company doing it right is Bohemian Coding(The guys who make sketch). They've adopted a maintenance model (so you pay yearly for updates but do not lose full access if you stop paying, very similar to a subscription) and they consistently deliver bug fixes and new features. For a working pro, CC isn't very expensive if you make use of it. Affinity is great but I'm concerned that they've underpriced their apps and they'll struggle once they reach the latter part of their lifecycle. For all of the bandwagoneering, subscription pricing is a symptom of the current condition of the software industry. Loads of companies don't want to do it, but it's a hard game. Anyway, ramble over. Not sure what the point was. For the record, I've worked in the creative software industry for a decade, so not speculation, actual insight.

I grew up using my dad’s copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 (probably around 12 years of usage) with no updates. It was an amazing program, but I lost the disc so I went to put out some money to get photoshop only to discover they only offer it in their subscription. There’s no way I can justify spending thousands of dollars (over the course of the coming years) just for Photoshop. That’s insane. I gave Affinity Photo a shot and it’s basically the same as Photoshop. Everything is where I can find it. Perfect (except for making transparency, but that’s just a matter of learning how to make masks) I went and bought Designer immediately and just recently put in a pre-order for Publisher. Great programs. Definitely worth the price.

As a former Adobe CS user, I now use the full Affinity range. Prior to Adobe, I was using CorelDraw. I went back to CD when Adobe went subscription only. They lured me back when Corel had a special promotion allowing an upgrade to CD X6 from any version of Adobe CS at the upgrade price! I duly went ahead avoiding Adboe's subription service. And this is where Corel screwed up. For they have now followed Adobe's path in promoting subscriptions over perpetual licences. Their yearly release plans have doubled the cost with upgrades being shut down and a yearly rolling upgrade being the best available option. You can still buy the full version of course.

Did an entire magazine solely using the Affinity suite last week. Fot now, Serif advises against using publisher for real jobs because the softsare is only in beta, but I went ahead and did it anyway. Of course "Photo" has been my go-to software for the last year and so is "Designer" when it comes to vectors. I exported the magazine and it was printed without any problems. For now, I'm going to stick to Serif's advice, just to be on the safe side, but I can't wait for the commercial version to come out. Serif is working hard smoothing out some final bugs and misses and I think we can expect the stable version pretty soon. I'll be hanging on to indisign for a while because i have 15 years of files worth for which i might need Indesign every now and then. New jobs will be done in the Affinity suite. The open source alternatives are surprisingly good and versitile but, as mentioned in the narration, have cluncky interfaces. Scribus also misses smooth implementation of a few features like hyphenation (which is a bit of a hassle) and justified alignment. You can however make fully professional lay-outs in the software. Master pages and export settings work very well. The new gimp is a step up from the old one and does everything you expect from a photo editor. It doesn't handle CMYK though, which is a bit of a must for print-oriented design. Haven't really tried Inkscape, but I see that some aretist make amazing vectors in teh software. People on a budget can definitely put a fully functional suite together with that software.

I could have just used GIMP, but when I used it in the past, I wasn't really happy enough with it to go that way. Some years ago, Ormr (I think they renamed it Bloom) looked like it could be a replacement, but it had few features...and I stopped trying their beta versions, because they, apparently needing some more money, said that if you gave them $25 during the beta phase, you'd get a full copy when it hit 1.0. They lied. When I tried out AP, it blew my mind...I was expecting to be a little disappointed, but it does everything I need it to do. Last year I checked into getting a Adobe CC subscription. I came across multiple forums of users and ex-users of the Abode programs who described their experiences with the subscription business model. Basically it's hostageware - keep paying the subscription if you want to access your files. But worse were the stories of how difficult it has proven to cancel subscriptions. People have had to jump through hoops to stop Abode from automatically taking money to renew subscriptions. All those stories add up to Adobe making it very difficult to dip out, forcing people to go to ridiculous lengths to get results. Many were forced to cancel their credit cards to put an end to Adobe's failure to stop taking their money when so requested. I've never come across such blatant greed built into a business model. Adobe lost countless old and new customers because of their shonky business model. Enter Affinity. I have used their Designer and Publisher programs and they are truly value for money. The nice thing is that you can open Adobe Illustrator files from Designer, and then convert them to Designer format. But the best thing is you don't pay through the nose to a company willing to screw over its loyal customers in the name of corporate greed.

I may not if it were no more than £10/month for it all ... but it’s £50/month... so I WILL ditch it when my current subscription year ends... their iPad photoshop and fresco is disappointing...even it they catch up with other options, they still don’t deserve my £50/month for the rest of my professional lifespan! I have switched from Adobe Photoshop to Affinity Photo already a while ago, pretty much as long as the app was on the Mac Appstore. I liked it so much that I did purchase Affinity Designer right away, when it came out. Same for the iOs versions. They are just the perfect graphic apps for my work as selfpublisher. I was using Quark XPress for some years now to get rid of InDesign and was pretty happy with it. Quark provided pre-sales offers that were ok, however, still pretty expensive. Now they have switched to a new sales strategy, requesting to join the "Advantage Program". They keep on telling it's not like Adobe CC, but in fact, it's kind of a subscription needed to receive updates, and it's more expensive than the former presales opportunities. Since I was trying out Affinity Publisher all through the beta, it was time to make another switch and I just placed my preorder for the Publisher, coming out on July 20th. I'm currently testing the beta with one of my book layouts and feel like a very happy camper. For freelancers like me, I currently can't imagine anything better and go with 100 percent Affinity. Photo/Designer/Publisher on Mac & iOs.

Honestly, it does not make sense to stick with Adobe anymore for most people unless you need industry-standard apps (as in you're going to be working with others with the same apps). Here are all the Adobe products that I have already replaced it with: Photoshop -> Affinity Photos ($49.99) Illustrator -> Affinity Designer ($49.99) XD -> Lunacy (Free) Premiere -> Blackmagic Davinci Resolve* (Free, and I plan to buy the one time license for the studio version for $299) After Effects -> Blackmagic Fusion (Free or $299 for the studio version) & FXHome Hitfilm (Free, just for motion graphics which I don't do often) Audition -> Presonus Studio One Artist ($99 + $80 for 3rd party VST support) Dreamweaver -> lol I don't use this, I just code my webpages using Visual Studios Code, which is free. If you use Macs, you can use some of these replacements: Premiere -> Final Cut Pro X After Effects -> Motion Audition -> Logic Pro X XD -> Sketch With all of this said, I still own Adobe products, I'm waiting for my year contract to end (which is in a couple of months from when I'm writing this). There are still two programs that I'm not entirely sure what to replace it with, and if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all open to trying out new software. As long if it's not a subscription-based app. - Adobe Lightroom - Adobe Acrobat *regarding NLE, I actually own several licenses to different programs including Avid Media Composer, Apple Final Cut Pro X, and Magic Vegas Pro. Tho I don't use these often. Especially Vegas which I don't even have installed right now lol.

Vegas is a train wreck IMO even though I have it installed and use it. UI is efficient but it's still very buggy. Resolve is what I'm defaulting to these days for video and given it has Fairlight incorporated now there's no need to work with other apps for video/audio editing. You just need some decent hardware specs for editing video. Lots of tutorials on how to get the best from lesser hardware when editing.

I never succumbed to Adobe's rental software. At the time of their strategic switch, I was a registered user of Lightroom, InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Now, my professional needs are addressed with Affinity Photo (Photoshop), Designer (Illustrator), and Publisher (InDesign), as well as ON1 Photo Raw 2019 (Lightroom). I eased my way into the transition by purchasing the Affinity apps as they became available and adding them to my doc and removing the Adobe apps. I slowly weaned myself off the Adobe apps and haven't looked back since! I've been using the beta of Publisher since it was released and have already purchased the program in advance of the official launch. While Affinity recommended against using Publisher in a production environment because it was in beta, it worked fine for me most of the time. I'm confident that Affinity is going to make huge inroads into the Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress market once it's released. Publisher offers most, if not all, of the same capabilities, for a fraction of the price. I'm a huge Affinity fan. Perhaps, their next step will be the video market. :-)

Many Illustrator users (at least the ones I know) go right to print from Illustrator. The majority of printers want a .pdf file, but unfortunately some still want an .ai file. Other artists are definitely going to ask for an ai file, so this eliminates being able to use Affinity in many professional environments off the bat. 3D artists are sometimes heavily reliant on bringing vector art into their 3D apps. Most 3D apps only accept .ai files (Illustrator 8 typically). The monopoly will continue on the pro end of things. Some gripes I had keeping me from switching to Affinity Photo have been resolved in 1.7, but I'm still trying to find some work-arounds to get past all of them.

I don't use these design feature except for Photoshop. My trio would include: Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects with an honorable mention for Audition. Affinity should aim beyond what's presently offered by Adobe such as 10 bit photo editing and enhanced utilization of graphics card processing for example. Nevertheless, the most important aspect of Adobe's product line is their dynamic link. More than any other single element, any competing developing product must be able to at least match -- if not surpass -- this most important feature.

@krane15
@krane15 5 жыл бұрын
@@unoengborg You are correct. In many cases its just as good. In others, Resolve is even better than Premiere. The biggest challenge in the change is adapting to the new ecosystem. Nevertheless, it does not overcome the biggest reason Adobe is able to do what it has. The reason it switched to subscription only is that it has virtually no competition particularly in it's suite. Sure we can match the applications piecemeal, but there is no combination of products currently available that can match Adobe's seamless integration between applications. In that, they are unique. The good news is that most of us don't mind the minor inconvenience if only to avoid being railroaded into a permanent subscription based tool. It also takes away all incentive to improve. Depending solely on Adobe's good grace to give us the improvements they want, when they want. Not the type of ties I'd want my livelihood dependent on.

I'm in the process of switching now only because the subscription was the simplest option for me to take although not happy being forced into that position. My main reason for switching now is the extreme amount of bloat that keeps multiplying with every adobe release. It wouldn't be a stretch to define it as malware at this point consuming loads of resources running numerous processes in the background even when the software is not in use, you have no idea what they're actually all doing and ending them will instantly see them start running again.. The only thing holding me back from switching to Affinity is having to deal with employers, clients and other designers who require or expect me to work with Adobe products or to supply tidy, supported files for Adobe apps. The features, UI and performance of the Affinity apps are good enough for my needs. I don't want to miss out on opportunities because I don't use the preferred or expected apps, nor do I want to deal with any inconveniences entailed when exporting, importing and tidying up supported file types for each app, potentially having to call upon other apps in the process to prepare files for use in Adobe apps. I am only comfortable switching when a file can be exported from Affinity Designer and opened in Adobe Illustrator and everything is as intended, or when Affinity apps have a significant share of the market, and therefore fewer missed employmeny opportunities and inconveniences will arise. If I were a hobbyist, I'd switch today without hesitation.

I do think that it's great that Serif seems to build a serious competitor to the Adobe Products functionality wise. The huge issue is that Adobes CC is an industry standard and therefore impossible to get around when you're working with other people. Also when making the switch to Affinity you have to learn new software which costs time and thus money. Switching from Quark Express to InDesign seemed to be a good idea in hindsight so maybe it's worth a shot but it will take some time until your customers and coworkers are okay with Affinity deliverables. If you're willing to spend the time learning new software it think it's a good idea to use Affinity for private projects and Adobe for your customers.

I will probably never switch over from the Aobe CC Subscription. Theres one major reason I've found a huge hitch even if you're only in it for the few apps they covered. Because of Affinities price, Serif have spent less time optimizing their programs to run faster during heavy projects. If you take 4k photos like myself, you can find that even on decent computers such as the XPS series by Dell have a hard time maintaining fast and smooth photo edits over the course of one to two hours. I have no issues like that running on Photoshop. This issue can be quite significant, and if you're on a tight timelines, then you cant afford to have to wait for effects or touch-ups to take effect.

I’ve been using photoshop since v2, illustrator since v3 (and before that Macromedia Freehand!) and Indesign since v1. So much of app usage comes down to muscle memory, and I don’t need to think using the cc apps, but I have both affinity apps on my iPad, and have been beta testing publisher. I like what I see. And I HATE Adobe’s subscription model!

The most confusing thing I suspect recently about Adobe subscription is they charge differently. I almost pay Adobe CC through their website but vaguely remember Adobe has a promo Email in my mailbox, the promotion link has expiration date but I’m still able to get the discount price a year after the expiration. Then one of my colleague also got the subscription but $5 cheaper than me. Nobody knows how much Adobe really value their software.

i've said the same about the Scribus UI to the developers. This being said, if Scribus' interface could be brought kicking and screaming into the 21st century it would be a serious competitor to InDesign. (for the record my PC uses InDesign CS6, Scribus 1.5.4 and I have recently finished testing Affinity Publisher, however with no support for RtL languages or footnotes/endnotes it is not something I can recommend at present, though it has now come out of beta and is available properly from later this month).

This will really give me something to think about! I bought Adobe disks years ago and as Windows evolved they became harder to work well together, plus they can only added to so many computers before they lock you out which is unfair. Every reload to fix a problem and every new pc counted against me til they wouldn't load properly at all. Luckily then I found an newer but obsolete version of AI and PS on line but it too is having trouble with Windows 10. Comparability goes back to XP LOL. I do most personal craft designing and paying every month is idiotic for what I do. It had been my hope that Apache would come out with something as they did with OpenOffice but Affinity sounds like the next best thing. I hope though, if after enough people jump to Affinity that they too won't put the thumb screws to the users like Adobe? Thanks again I'd never hear of Affinity before you.

No problem, glad I could help. Be aware though that affinity does have some limits on the numbers of computers you can have active installs on, I think that is pretty standard for a software company to do. Let us know how you enjoy Affinity!

It's not a subscription, you will never be automatically charged for an update, if you want to purchase the new version you can, but if you want to stay on the old version you can do that too. Its basically like the Adobe Creative Suite (CS) used to be.

@@chucklesdeclown8819 yes for major version release you will have to buy it again (just like the old day with CS 4, 5, 6, etc) but only if you want to upgrade. And so far I think we are three years in and we haven't had to rebuy it yet. I'm also betting they will have an upgrade option that will be cheaper than buying the app again outright.

I get that subscription model sucks but Adobe is 19 a month for everyone teachers, students, educators. The first month free and 3 months if you say your thinking of canceling then you can contact support for deal. Plus places like envato market only have good effects libraries for adobe products.

So I installed AD on the Mac as well on PC, still have to give it a try. there are some things I need to get adjusted to cuz some are different from AI's workflow but overall both programs seem to have a lot in common. I've seen some follow designers work in Affinity and I couldn't be happier to see that designer is a crossover of Ai + PS in one. Honestly using raster effects in AI eats up a lot of memory especially if it's a complex project
@bendesignsmedia

Hi Romeo, that is one of the biggest advantages of the affinity ecosystem in my opinion. Even though I use Illustrator as well if I need raster effects in a project I use affinity designer because it is so much easier.

The illustrator eyedropper tool can be set up to sample any attributes one requires. Can you do that in Affinity Designer? The combination of vector and pixel features in Affinity is really great, But Illustrator is still the best for me it just flows - particularly, when using the various vector shape manipulation and pen tools - great ergonomics and haptic - but at a price. Does Affinity Designer have a perspective grid tool like Illustrator? well if not that´s because I don´t really like Illustrators grid tool because it is kind of clunky and restricting. What is really missing in Affinity Designer is the object blend tool; which is really indispensable when it comes creating realistic spatial gradient illustrations
