One way to help eliminate other cases quickly is to notice a+b-1 is odd/even iff b-a isn’t. So we only need to check 1/24 and 3/8.

very nice of you to say that! my tip is to enjoy the problem solving process... whether or not you end up solving a problem, there are usually some highlights along the way where you learn something. the joy of discovery keeps me going.
