I think a lot of people who use positive reinforcement for training want to find a way to say "no that is not what I want". So I think that was a good way to overcome your problem. 😄 Very interesting vidéo 😄😄

I tried EVERYTHING with my horse. He used to bite very badly. The only thing that worked was positive reinforcement! This should not be called an "unusual way", this is the correct, ethical way! :)

If +R training created a biting problem or whatever, then we would have some major problems with dogs 😂 they're mainly trained with +R Granted they're two completely diff animals but at the same time, food is a universal need to all animals At the barn tht I work at, I see both sides of +R and -R, and the +R has much better results Keep doing what you're doing Jill! We're rooting for ya

Oh yes the video I’ve been needing! My gelding is very mouthy, he never means harm he just wants to play, (another ottb) but it’s getting a little bit out of hand, and what I’ve been doing hasn’t been working. I want to try positive reinforcement with him and see how he does, but I literally have no idea where to start so this is very helpful, thank you. I’m also a little worried that he will be the exception to what you say about +R making mouthy horses, as well as his owners (I only lease him unfortunately) are very um... set in their ways (not that they beat their horses by any means) and would probably think I’m going crazy. But again thank you for making this video, it was extremely helpful, now off to listen to those articles and podcasts you recommend...

This couldn’t have come at a better time as I am working with a pony who is a nipper. Her issue is turning as to nip the person walking her while she is being lead. Is there a way to modify it while in motion? Would you use a target in front to touch while leading? She doesn’t seem to do it when standing still from what I have heard. She hasn’t tried the behavior with me as of yet, but I have only worked with her twice. I really love the idea of using positive reinforcement, as I like the bond and trust, not through being forceful. Although I was told “ don’t be afraid to really get after her if she tries to nip at you.” Yah no, I don’t operate that way. Going after a nervous/ stressed pony.. I think that would open up more issues than solve them. I would rather want her to be calm leading then being “calm” out of fear or submission. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I couldn’t agree more with what you said at the end. I would work on a head away or head in the center of your body behavior and then ask for that, after you’ve got it really going consistently, and then add a step of walk and keep that criteria of head away from your body. You could also try using a target and having her target at away from you as you move into her body, so she learns that when you move towards her she moves away.

This is awesome, but how would you handle it if the nipping happens during the feeding? The pony I'm working with takes the food out of my hand so violently, and I'm trying to teach him to take it gently. How would you incorporate a reward when the reward is involved in the problem??
@bellahuddle3406
@bellahuddle3406 5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps use something other than food to reward, eg. scratches. Or put the treat on the ground for the pony to eat:)
@sidilicious11
@sidilicious11 5 жыл бұрын
Josie Rose I’ve been clicker training our horses for over 10 years. Here’s what you could try, after you click, hold the treat in a closed fist in your hand, face down. When your horse is polite and not grabbing you can turn your hand over, still closed. When he’s ready to politely and carefully take the treat then open your hand. They can soon learn to be more careful about treat taking with this technique. Good luck!

I tried this on my horse who won’t let me put his halter on..... he start to back up and then eventually turns around and bolts and gallops laps around the pasture and I can never catch him.... let me tell you in a matter of minutes he was letting me take it on and off a few times... I guess this helps with things other than biting😂

Hi Jill. I'm only about halfway through the video but how do you think the best way to calm down a cinchy horse would be using PF? My mare is cinchy to the point of coming around and try to bite me and doesn't like being poked. We have tried ulcer treatment for a month and nothing has changed.
@JETEquiTheory
@JETEquiTheory 5 жыл бұрын
do you mean +R? I’m unfamiliar with PF. and to answer your question, make sure you rule out anything pain related. Check the saddle fit, check her teeth, have a chiropractor see her, and be sure she doesn’t have ulcers. Sometimes if horses are in pain, even when they aren’t in pain the things that made the pain worse still have a bad association. So if she did have ulcers and you girthed her up while she had them, the girth is now conditioned as painful. So you need to undo that association, and it works super well with +R. I can’t stress enough, that you must rule out the pain first. After that you can work in successive approximation, hold the girth up, let her sniff it give her a treat, jingle it give her a treat, put the girth on the billets give her a treat touch your hand under her belly give her a treat& so on until you can girth her up. ive done it successfully with a few! and make sure that you aren’t reinforcing her ears going back or her having a negative expression.

Hi! I have a horse that has aggression issues to other horses and people! He lunges at other people and horses in the cross-ties.. I have tried to correct his behavior by a small smack on the stomach and he stops for a while.. he lunges at people who don’t correct him but he doesn’t lunges at me because I corrected the behavior! Don’t get me wrong he is such a sweet boy when he wants to be, very smart, and loving. Do you have any advice on how to make it stop or correct it properly?

How did you teach them to stand at the target? My horse targets a sitting target, but she quickly gets distracted from it
@JETEquiTheory
@JETEquiTheory 5 жыл бұрын
hmm it’s hard to say, but maybe your rate of reinforcement is too low or the time you’re asking her to stand there is too difficult so back down from it a bit. what i would do is give your cue (touch, target, whatever you say) and when she touches it, click and walk towards her, holding the food towards her chest so she takes a step back on her own. then give the touch cue again. this way she’s set up to go back to the target. then you can slowly start increasing the time

this video was really helpful, but can you make a video about how to work with a horse that gets extremely anxious when i tack him up.
@iriolexisbierle6697
@iriolexisbierle6697 5 жыл бұрын
I've used what we call the "play button" to deal with this. For example, I present the saddle pad. When he touches it with his nose, I gently place it on his back then click and reward. This basically gives HIM control of when things happen. He knows that if he is not comfortable with having that particular piece of tack put on, he will not touch it with his nose (aka "press play") so I will not proceed to put it on his back. This has also helped me determine if there is something in particular that bothers him. For example, he will quickly "press play" for the rubber brush but usually won't for the curry comb. The anxiety horses feel usually has to do with them feeling a lack of control over what happens to them. If you allow them a way to communicate BACK to you (instead of you just telling them) it gives them a form of control that can help to drastically decrease anxiety. Hope this helps!

i think the previous comment is awesome! Some other things to consider however, would be does he have ulcers, do his teeth hurt, does his back hurt, do his feet hurt, rule out everything medically before you start trying to address anything with training. Training won’t work if the horses in pain. Another thing to consider is, is he enjoying the work. Obviously this can be easily interpreted in a number of ways but if the work is extremely stressful or painful for him then it may be a source of anxiety as tacking up is a cue for the ride that’s about to happen
@Lexi-is7ct

JETequitheory okay thank you so much, i’ll contact the vet to make sure everything is good. i don’t think the work is stressful for him because i only ride for about 30 to 45 min and i only walk, trot, canter and jump no higher than 2’ 5’’ but thank you for the advice, i really appreciate you taking the time to help me out!!

So what is the point of the target? I like the whole positive reinforcement thing but that is the one thing I don’t get.
@sarahluv6228
@sarahluv6228 5 жыл бұрын
I would love to hear her side of it as well, but usually when I clicker train I use the target more as a starting point. It reinforces what the click means while also allowing you to alter how you use the target in order to lure other behaviors. For example, if your horse won't offer to put his nose in the halter you can present the target through the halter to make what your asking more clear. Or you could use it to lure them into a bow. Scary side of the barn,arena,etc? Slowly lure them closer and reward as you go. The willing equine I believe even uses it to start teaching them how to lunge :)
