We must remember that Toyota at the end of the day is a private company seeking to bring in revenue year after year. It also doesn't help that the United States has very different safety and emissions regulations to which new vehicles sold abide to, as opposed to most countries who follow UN-ECE standards mostly based off European vehicle regulations, which means that cars that have been certified for sale in the European Union can be sold in most of the world, that's how Mexico got the GR Yaris but the USA didn't for example, because Mexico also accepts vehicles that comply with UN-ECE standards as well as North American ones.

US has much less strict emission laws than EU for many years now. It ain't 80's/90's anymore. And US safety tests are less strict than Euro NCAP. These regulations were placed in US to keep budget European cars away from the market with high import taxes and tons of regulations specific for US market. But the reason why Yaris GR didn't make it to the US is even simplier: US market hates small city cars and manual transmissions.
@LouisSubearth
@LouisSubearth 2 жыл бұрын
@@gameboyterrorysta6307 US safety standards are tested at higher speeds than Euro NCAP, and emissions regulations are stricter, which is why very few small diesels make it statewide for example, and like you said, the market isn't too kind to small hatchbacks, and that means that there's little incentive to spend the money needed to homologate cars that will sell poorly and/or at a loss.

Toyota is the least boring of the Japanese manufacturers. Nissan had been very close until 20 years ago. After watching the intro i need to say: can you blame any manufacturer at this point for not giving the US market some cool cars? Every time they do, the car ends up not selling as much as they want because it ends up standing on sales floors for at least 50% increased markup. One car that comes directly to my mind is the Ford Focus RS, a car that could have sold a lot but who would buy a Focus RS for the money the stealerships asked for. Anyone that think Toyota is the “most boring” just isn’t informed. Toyota is actually the best Japanese brand with the most fun offerings yes better then Honda and Nissan but like this video said because America didn’t get 97 percent of it… “Non” Toyota enthusiast just don’t know. What also hurts Toyota in the Public eye is that they do not advertise any of their racing heritage or any of their performance vehicles really. They only advertise their money makers. I should be able to walk into a dealership and see paintings and posters of Toyota going F1 racing, rally racing, baja racing and you see none of this when you enter a dealership it’s like Toyota completely ignores their racing history.

The US market gets the Civic Si. Japan doesn’t. It is equivalent to the Golf GTI being sold in the US but not Germany. Cars are cheaper in the US. Japanese cars are cheaper in the US. Imagine American cars made in the US being cheaper than imported US cars in Japan. Most Japanese people pay close to USD40,000 for a 2022 brz or USD (highest spec of course) - because the navigation or even the audio system doesn’t come with the car. Also we have to pay for the car carpets separately. Also Japanese incomes are lower than American ones. So the thing is - while we may get better things, we can hardly afford them.

Super presentation. Well put together ! I thoroughly enjoyed this video. The world got the Yaris, after it won the Gold Steering award in Europe. I had the four-door sedan, a simple super-reliable car with a 1300cc engine. Excellent handler. In Japan the same car came with a 1500cc (1NZFE) engine, sold as the Belta. The 2-door & 4-door hatchback was sold there as the Vitz in 1,000, 1300 & 1500cc engine sizes. The sporty hatchback, the Vitz RS had traction control, rear discs, came as 2 or 4 door, in Auto or manual Transmission. In 2001, you could buy a 2-door, manual 1500cc VVTI (1NZFE) with a Turbo and Intercooler ! Since the Vitz came on the market in Japan, all three iterations of the tiny hatch could be bought with a Turbo Intercooled engine ! When Toyota re-entered the Rally competitions, the Hatchback GRMN (GAZOO RACING MASTER of the NURBURGRING) Yaris (Vitz) had an 1800cc (2ZRFE) supercharged motor. The domestic street-legal Japanese GRMN (NCP-131 model Vitz) came with a 1500cc Turbo (INZFE) motor. I have seen the 1800cc street-legal version Vitz being sold in Japan. In recent years the epic GR Yaris has evolved with more horsepower with a new 3-cylinder 1600cc engine. This car that have rally-enthusiasts by the balls, is what is featured in the latter half of this video. I used to import used Japanese cars in my country, and our family had the 4-door hatchback Vitz RS in the first (NCP13) and third (NCP131) iterations. Both had Automatic transmissions. In my opinion, after importing hundreds of cars from Japan, the Yaris/Vitz cars are some of the most durable and reliable cars that Toyota ever made. Oh ! The Yaris was sold as the Echo in some countries. The nice part ? Each citizen in my country is allowed to import a new or used car every 4 years ! Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.

North Americans have themselves to blame for the Yaris GR-Four not been sold here. Because of everybody's obsession with big ridiculous unnecessary vehicles they can't really afford, people chose to ignore the sub compact car market. And because of this all of those cars went away, including the Yaris. The fact of the matter is Toyota is not going to spend thousands of dollars to certify a car they are only going to sell a few of, one fact everyone is missing is this, in every country that the Yaris GR-Four is sold in they have the regular Yaris, the GR-Four came through the door on the back of the regular Yaris certification, that's how we got the Focus ST, Focus RS, Fiesta ST, Civic Type-R etc.

When listening to this video- I can only think of the 'what if's' from nearly every car manufacturer that isn't American! While yes we have muscle cars- the rest of the world has unique style, simpler reliability and ingenious components that defy time and modern cars! I for one think that if Toyota regulated the GR Yaris for U.S. standards then Toyota would have a following in regards to the MK4 Supra! (But we'll definitely get a de-tuned engine 🙄!) Yet the GR Corolla maybe what we wanted but just bit heavier? I'm juxstaposed but I'm also excited to see what Toyota can do. Plus also I have to be patient the car crisis is putting a clamp on just about...everything [Regarding automotive industry].

Let's say the Toyota GR Yaris comes to US. Than some journalistic automotive hack will lay his mittens on that car. 50% of the article he will write, will be dedicated to the infotainment, the size of the screen and the functions of the programs. 45% will be dedicated to the size and comfort of the seats, outward visibility, materials used inside the cabin and available colors. Somewhere hidden towards the end he might mention the size and specs of the engine and drivetrain.

I drive the GR Yaris for 9 month now and I'm very happy with it. It's an everyday Rallycar, a bit weak under 3000 rpm, but very powerful in higher rpm and the AWD works like a dream, you can't compare to any other AWD hatchback. Since October 2021, you can't order the GR Yaris from Europe, but Toyota will still deliver all ordered cars up to summer 2023... I think Toyota is beliving in old cliches that people of the US only drive huge cars with huge motors. Greeting from Germany!

To be fair, there's some truth in that. The SUV/Crossover/Trucks segment absolutely dominate the NA market with the RAV4 as Toyota's best selling model there, while small hatchbacks like the Yaris or even Ford's Fiesta ST doesn't sell all that well.

Hi. Nice work on that video. I just wanted to mention few details about toyota's engagelent in rallye. After the celica GT4 group A, toyota came back to wrc after their 1 year ban form the FIA. They actulally came back with the corolla wrc during the second half of the nineties. They wasn't as dominant as they used to be with the celica, but still they won some rallyes with the corolla. Only after that they left for a while till recently.

They've announced this GR Corolla when I bought my Veloster N back in 2019. It's already 2022 and Hyundai has 2 more N cars out, the Elantra N and Kona N. 3 N cars are already out and Toyota is just starting to tease a GR Corolla... Keep in mind that Hyundai is a company that isn't known for making enthusiast cars and yet, here we are with 3 N cars out. But Toyota keeps limp dicking the NA market of these fun cars that we are asking for. Hell, Mexico got a limited run of the GR Yaris just for asking and even South Korea got the car too. Me and a couple other enthusiast aren't holding our breaths anymore Toyota. No, we don't want a Subaru 86 nor a BMW Supra. We want something 100% Toyota.

In the UK, they had a 1.8L back in 2006. And then there was a 1.8L supercharged GRMN back in 2018 that was available in the UK and Japan. There's apparently new GRMN coming out in Japan. The Yaris is kind of popular in Japan and the UK. Its mostly about marketing and lifestyle. I used to drive a NCP93 1.5L and I loved it. It was fun; the lightweight made it fun for what it was. Not to mention, getting around the city was a lot easier. I own a FK4 now, which I also love/hate (honestly, you can't enjoy something if you don't have things that you don't like about it). But if I were tobe able to drive manual, I would go back to a Yaris. It's not a touring car, but it's the fun little car from point a to point b. I'm also an Evo fan girl, so the Yaris is the little gem in my heart :')

Since the first generation of the Toyota Vitz (Yaris in non-JDM) there has always been a 4WD version. As a matter of fact, almost all Toyota's JDM models have a 4WD version. Any model number ending with 5, is a 4WD, like NSP135. Toyota has many nice models, which are only sold in Asian markets. Many minivans that are practical but still fun to drive. Many also have a Gazoo version, even though it's mostly cosmetic with a little bit of suspension tuning.
