In this video I use my own art done over the last year as an example of how to think about self critique and giving yourself things to focus on in the coming year/time period.
I discuss the benefits of being able to direct your own art journey. There are also a lot of benefits to getting advice from others, and I think all methods of getting feedback are valuable, this talk focuses on figuring things out for yourself.
It follows on from a previous video I did which talked about goal setting:
You can find that one here: • Have You Made Your Art...
In that video I outlined a simple plan for setting goals and refocusing your art game. To be used if you feel a little bit lost or deflated. Or as a new year resolution style boost.
In this video I follow a similar process, using my own work as an example. Basically doing what I suggested... so you can hopefully learn from my examples and specific situation.
Your journey and your goals will be totally different. But I think a lot of the process is universal.
Happy Drawing!

I'm still in the beginning of my art journey, but you and I seem to be drawn to similar methods, ideas, and aesthetics. For a few years, I was using plain copy paper for all of my practice and rough work. Then I switched to Strathmore 400 sketchbooks because all of the individual papers are hard to organize, and it is hard to see my progress in them. One recently switched back to copy paper, the 32 lbs / 120 GSM kind, and it's so great to work with, especially this higher quality kind. I'm using plain paper folders to organize things, and when a folder gets to 100 sheets, I will transfer them to a 'punchless clamp binder' . I hope this will give me the best of both worlds. I really enjoy your content. Thank you for contributing your knowledge and experience to the ' teach yourself via online resources ' world. I'm benefiting from it greatly.

I think there's a special charm to physical comic books. We have our collection of Tintins, Asterix, Elfquest, Papyrus, Suske & Wiske, De Geuzen and De Koene Ridder (don't know if those last 4 appeared outside of Belgium) proudly standing on the shelves. The cover art is always pleasant to look at, and we change up the front ones from time to time. The upside, just as with paper sketchbooks, is that you can pick them up anytime and read them absolutely anywhere (especially outside), without fear of empty batteries or it being stolen like the case would be with phones or reading tablets. I have the complete Elf Quest series digitally, and a tablet and laptop to read them with, yet I reach for the physical ones every time. A physical copy to me seems worth the money more, even if it's more expensive, those you really own in your house, they're really your own collection, whereas digital is out of reach if the phone/battery dies, than you are left empty handed. We have the same philosophy with books, and music. We rather buy CDs and LP than mp3s. There's something about touch and collecting something. I don't think physical will ever disappear, the market may shrink, but it will always be there. Just like video- and mobile games haven't truly pushed out board games.

This has been so helpful. I've grown alot as an artist over the last year, but recently have been feeling like I've reached a point where it's difficult for me to move to the next level. I keep asking for feedback and critiques through Instagram but of course no-one wants to provide any. I've watched this video a few times, but its really become relevant to me lately and I intend to take your advice and hopefully that will help me upgrade to the level I'd like to be at. Thank you again for these free tutorials - they're tremendously insightful and constructive.

Thanks a lot for another great video. Really inspiring!! Actually i combined the critiques from both myself and others, and later I pick and chose the critiques again with my own goal is storytelling. Your early works reminded me Miyazaki's watercolor painting. Are you a fan of Ghibli?? Can I ask the name of the comic at 20:15??

Hey MAI! I'm a huge Miyazaki fan for sure. Some of the tests I did this year which were trying to get faster looser results were inspired by his ability to get really great results in his concept sketches with those loose lines and watercolor. One day I will figure that out :) I think storytelling is an awesome goal! The Comic there is nothing so far. It has no name and is not released. This video is the only place to see them so far! :) I did those pages while waiting for a few big comic projects to start in late 2020 and early 2021 (almost as a warm up) but they never ended up happening.

Hey this is interesting stuff. Would you recommend wide gamut monitor for comics?
@TheDrawingCodex
@TheDrawingCodex 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dorobo! Yes I would. It doesn't have to be a crazy high wide gamut pro monitor. But something with a decent range is really helpful thesedays. And it will become more so in the future. I'll make a video on monitors soon perhaps? I think it's an interesting topic
