Willie K Vanderbilt did inherit $55,000,000, but could not have been the richest man in America in 1885 since his brother Cornelius II inherited $70,000,000 of their father's fortune. Tessie Oelrichs was herself nouveau riche; her father was an Irish (Catholic, no less) immigrant named James G Fair who was a partner in the Comstock Lode silver mines. She was the money in her family, not her husband, as she and her sister "Birdie" (Mrs. Willie K Vanderbilt, Jr) inherited their father's whole mining fortune. FYI: Jim Fair was planning a Nob Hill mansion when he died, but his daughters had no interest in San Francisco property so they built the Fairmont Hotel on daddy's land instead. The term "Robber Baron" was first used for American industrialists in 1870 in The Atlantic Monthly. Whole videos could be done about the antics of both Tessie Oelrichs and Mamie Fish. Another fyi: Ruth Livingston Mills even looked down on Caroline Astor based on the social standing of the Livingstons vs. the Schermerhorns (pronounced as Skermerhorn).

Thank you for this well researched video. I am watching "The Gilded Age" and have been pausing it to look some of the characters up online to see if they were actual figures. In interviews with Morgan Spector, who plays George Russell, he said that his character is based on Jay Gould. I think that it's a combination, as you said in the video. A funny note on my part is that I can't get beyond the beard and Gould had one. I knew about the Dollar Princesses, but I found a book at my local used bookstore by Anne de Courcy, "The Husband Hunter's". It describes NYC society of the period very well and the individual women who were, I would call, "sold" off to the British aristocracy with Jennie Jerome Churchill being the first in the book. I'll look forward to your next video on Consuelo Vanderbilt. There is quite a bit of an American bloodline in the British aristocracy.

William II built Eagle's Nest in Centerport NY. The estate had a planetarium and it was turned into a museum. Every school in the vicinity were given access at a very discounted rate. I know my class would visit the estate and planetarium at least 4 times a school year. William had a variety of collections it was like visiting a small Natural History Museum and having a Planetarium 5 minutes away. We had hands on learning of astronomy. I don't know if it was the State, County of request of the Vanderbilts that schools would have access at such reduced costs yet all of these years later I still appreciated the opportunity.

Thanks for your hard work on these videos, really enjoying them! As I understand from an interview with Julien Fellowes, the characters are compilations, so he’s not bound by reality. But, there was a similar incident in history, from Ep.3, where some aldermen were trying the same thing to Vanderbilt, and tried again later by some senators, and both times Vanderbilt outsmarted them, ruining them financially. That’s one thing I really enjoy about the show, it’s drawing from many different things and people. Keep up the great work!

I think the characters are more inspired by; Bertha Russel in Alva Vanderbilt characterized by her aspirations to be included at the top of the social scale in New York City, now for me George Russel would be inspired by Jay Gould, who although he was a successful businessman amassing a large Fortune and being part of the newcomers new money, their business practices were not recognized as honest, earning the dislike and hatred of many. It should also be noted that the names of the characters of George and Bertha Russell sound somewhat similar to the wealthy characters of George and Bertha Dorset in Edith Wharton's novel; The House of Mirth.

I agree with Bertha being Alva Vanderbilt (and daughter Gladys as Consuelo Vanderbilt), I don't see George as Willie K. Vanderbilt. George Russell is based on Jay Gould. I studied the local history of Tarrytown, NY for years while attending Columbia. I focused on the Lyndhurst Castle there that was owned by Jay Gould. One major error: Cornelius was the son of William H Vanderbilt who was the son of "Commodore" Vanderbilt. When the Commodore died, he willed 90% of his fortune to his son William. America is just as classiest as England. We just do a better job of hiding it as it is direct opposition to our American Dream bumper sticker. There are so many layers to an old money vs new money war that mostly have nothing to do with actual money. Somehow this show isn’t capturing that. It needs a character like the Dowager to capture the “old way/old money” of thinking. These old money characters are fluff and the new money characters are horrible.
