Hello- I love your videos!!! Thank you so much! They are lucky to have you; the love spills out of you! I have had whippets for over 30 years; have 2 now. Here are my ideas; 1. Exercise. I have found that they are like light switches, either on or off. I agree with everything you say. I do think they need to run free (safely). I have a fenced yard ( which my girl can pop right over but usually doesn't). I walk them at least an hour several times weekly. I exercise mine at the end of a fishing pole- I swing it around and they chase a plastic bag tied to the end of the line. My whippets start getting mischevious in the house if they need exercise. 2., 3. 4., 5. Cost, insurance is variable- I live in upstate New York, USA... I do not have health insurance on them; they tend to be quite healthy; some have heart murmurs but that hasn't affected their health or logevity... I get 15-17 years out of mine. No teeth issues. They do get chews to monge on. We have had a few cuts requiring stitches, not much. 6. Nails need to be somewhat short or they will injure their toes while running. I cut them every 2-3 weeks and use a dremmel tool to sand the sharp edges. 7. Anesthesia..There is special anesthesia for sighthounds; most vets are aware of this but it doesn't hurt to remind them. The wrong anesthesia can kill them. There are short acting ones for older dogs. Be sure you have a vet that knows. 8., 9., 10., 11., Training is easy; use positive reinforcement as they can be sensitive and shut down on you if you are harsh. "Playtraining" is a super good way to train. Lots of treats. "Come" "down" and "stay" are super important for their safety. I start a vocal reward "good doggie" as soon as they make the first move to come. I do not make them come and then, sit- just come with lavish reward. Aggie of Cape Cod has good training videos on You Tube. "Playtraining your Dog" is a good book. We are not very "structured" but consistent with training and follow through. Not sure what structure means, really, sorry. Simple clear commands as you say. They run right through invisible fencing and won't take a "hit" to come back, so we don't have invisible fences. 12. Easy to housebreak, no problems there 13. Cats- I had one cat killer ( never succeeded); 3 chase but don't hurt; 3 don't bother chasing. We have one cat now but wouldn't recommend. 14. Recall- extremely important- see above. We train by going to a fenced area and calling the dogs back and forth between us, over and over until they are tired. 15. They sleep as long as we do... alot. Mine are sleeping now this cold, rainy day. 16. Mine don't like the cold or the rain; we have nice plush sweaters and coats like yours for winter walks. 17. I use tightening collars that they cannot slip; don't have a harness but probably should. I would say you have to be careful with tightening collars, probably not for inexperienced whippet owners. 18. Travel. MIne are good travellers. My girl likes to curl up under the back of the driver's seat so I put a little bed there for her. I haven't had good luck with seat belts; they struggle the whole time but we don't travel much. Should be in acrate ideally, I guess. 19. Important: Come, down and stay by far in case they get loose on you. 20. Children. Mine can tire of children but are very tolerant. Just have to be mindful. 21. Fireworks don't bother mine at all. One of mine likes to watch them. Very cute. 22. Beach. Mine do not want to even get their feet wet. We live on a river and watch out for ice, they can fall through and drown. ( never happened, thankfully) 23. Clean..They are very clean and don't smell "doggy" too much. I wash their beds alot and bathe them every 3 months or, so. 24. Fox poo. yes, baths!!! hehe..We do not allow them to eat it. Whew! Big assignment, my man! LOVE YOUR VIDS!!!! GOD BLESS!

Thank you @orbit underdog, agree with you 100% , I have the impression with share the same dog, travel, clean, exercise, etc but the beach, mine loooooves running in the beach. Same as not being structured, but I get a good "seat" "down" "lay" and recall. Angie from Cape Cod is a star !!! she knows her business and I wish I could visit her. I've only owned one Whippet but I have always had sight-hounds and the Whippet is the perfect sight hound breed for someone who lives in a small house or apartment. Their relatively small size means that you don't need a large place for them as long as they get out for regular walks and one good daily run in a safely fenced area. I love the breed. My dog was happy if he had a chance to run hard once a day and have a quick walk when he woke up in the morning, after meals, and before bed-time. My one warning to people who are getting a Whippet puppy is that they can be wild when they are puppies, chewing anything they can get their teeth into and with absolutely no sense of "recall" until they reach about eight months of age. Make sure you have a well fenced area where they can run safely when they are little as they don't arrive with any 'traffic sense'. If you can find a puppy obedience training class with a teacher who never yells, hits or punishes harshly, your Whippet will soon grow to be a wonderful dog citizen. Whippets are not difficult to 'House Train' and you can teach them quickly to respond to a word like "Empty" if you start taking them out after every rest period and meal. Your Whippet will need warm clothes for wet or cold days because they have a very thin smooth coats and can get chilled easily if they aren't actually 'on the run'. They do best when wearing a harness specifically designed to fit sight hounds. If a Whippet wears a collar it should be one that is quite wide (at least 2 to 2 1/2" wide) that doesn't put a great deal of stress on one part of your dog's neck. Whippets accelerate so rapidly that a thin collar could cause damage to their necks. In the house make sure that your Whippet has a crate with a comfy bed for the night-time and a spot of its own on a couch or comfortable chair where it doesn't have to worry about being stepped on. Whippets need very good quality high protein food. They don't eat a lot so what they eat should be the best food you can buy. Supply hard 'milk bones' daily to help keep your Whippet's teeth clean and healthy and train them to accept tooth brushing early! Provide lots of fresh clean water for drinking. Ask local sight hound breeders in your area about the best vet to use for your dog. Sight hounds react strongly to anesthetics and need a vet that is accustomed to working with them. They tend to be healthy dogs. Whippet breeders used to have trouble with early blindness in their dogs so speak to your vet and local hound breeders about 'Progressive Retinal Atrophy' before you buy your puppy. It is a disease that can be passed on in a blood-line so make yourself aware of this concern. Whippets will not "guard your house" for you. You could live with a Whippet for years without ever hearing it bark! They get along best with other sight hounds and seem very patient with children as long as the children have good supervision to ensure that they are never rough with the dog. If you intend to have a cat in the house, introduce your Whippet to them when they are young puppies and supervise their contact carefully until you are certain that the dog will not chase the cat. The Whippet's 'hunting genetics' are very strong and a cat could easily become an object to chase and catch! Other small pets would probably never be completely safe in a home with a Whippet. Whippets are very clean dogs and never seem to develop a "doggy smell". Get a soft brush to keep them tidy and polish them with a soft cloth if you really want their coats to shine. Wipe their feet when they come in from a walk and most of your grooming will be done!

I completely agree with you. Our whippet is wonderful, so sweet and cuddly, loves to sleep, also very funny, smart, and playful. Like you said the only problem we’ve had is recall due to her prey drive. She chased a fox once and flew right over the fence and was gone in a flash and didn’t hear a word we yelled. I found her at the end of the block walking on the sidewalk toward home looking sad. Recall is the only issue. She’s an amazing dog!

1, no we took our boy out for 1 40 minute walk mostly off the lead 5/7 days a week 2, we bought 1 coat which lasted all his life. Dry food £24 which was every 3 months. Insurance we didn’t after he was 6 and saved the money just in case. His last 4 months of his life cost us £500. Nail clipping as I couldn’t do it. 😂 3, yes they are very healthy. The only time our boy went was the last 6 months of his life (except for yearly jabs). 4, we took our boy to puppy classes, then went onto the bronze level. He was pretty good. We still kept the training up until he died. We moved his feeding around as we were told he would get stressed if it wasn’t given to him at the same time every day. (Just in case something happens to us and we couldn’t get home to feed him). 12, Be consistent, use same words. 14, 90% he would come back. 15, no (My husband says so) 😂 To be fair our boy would make a double bed into 1/2 a single whilst he would have the rest! 16, nice fluffy inside water proof outside coat. Fluffy blanket when you come back! 17, we had a collar as he walked to heel most of the time but when we get another I will get a harness. 18, yes our boy had no choice, start them young. Our old boxer didn’t as we didn’t do it from young enough. 19, very sensitive, needs a lot of human contact and love. If you are not patient and loud a whippet is not for you. 20, yes 21, I purposely put our dog outside when there were fire works at a young age and played with him. Never had a problem with him. 23, our boy was never smelly unless he washed himself in poo. 25, our boy loved the beach when we took him which wasn’t often as we don’t live near one. But he loved the woods!

I had my whippet almost 15 years; he made me a better person. Exercise: yes, the light-switch -- ON or OFF! Beach: He hated it! Recall: Very easy, I could walk him off-leash everywhere. He was better known in my neighborhood than I was. His one flaw: Eating stuff off the ground, which sometimes got him sick -- much harder to train him out of than anything else. Bed: He cycled each night among several spots to sleep, always ending up back-to-back with me. Health: I had to use an acid-preventative because he had reflux, but it worked.

When I decided to head off travelling in my van I realised there wasn’t really space for two so gave one away to a lovely couple who already had two and wanted a third. So I still have Zippee and I agree with all your comments and observations regarding whippets. He is a joy to live with and I can’t imagine being without him. @@onemanandhiswhippet That's sad.The first one (the oldest) I took on walk during fireworks and everytime the went off he looked up at me to sort of ask "what's that? is it a scary thing?" and I just talked softly to him how godd he was and I did not show him any worry from myself when they went off so he learned that it's nothing to be afraid of. I did the same with cars and lorries. I did the same with the second one and the older whippet helped too, so when we adopted the third one who was 4 years 10 months and lived in the city in a flat, we had no idea how he would react, but he was just as cool as a cucumber. I've had 3 whippets over the last 14 years. They love to sleep and are very adaptable to your lifestyle. I live in western Canada, and it gets down to negative 40 Celsius in the winter. We don't go for walks outside if colder than negative 6 Celsius to negative 10C with wind chill. They just go outside and do their business and quickly run in the house or a quick loop around the yard. We play games in the home and they do just fine. These temperatures can last for 3 months. They have a Chillydog coat and muttlucks boots, and a snood that I can pull over their ears for the walks. Two of them love to travel and one would be very stressed. They loved to go boating, swimming, hiking, and ripping around on the beach in the summer. I did agility, competitive obedience with one of my girls but the other two dogs had no interest. Not good dogs for offleash parks as they have thin skin easily ripped with boisterous play of other poorly behaved dogs. Skin tears were my biggest cost at the vets. I live in a wooded area and they had a lot of tears from branches because they tend to run full speed with little concern for their wellbeing. I use the same ruffwear harness and a wide martingale collar for quick walks. I find whippets very healthy dogs, one of mine had a sensitive stomach and the other two could eat anything. I feed minced raw in morning and best quality kibble I can afford in the evening. Two of my dogs were killers, multiple hare, rabbits and one unfortunate cat that wandered into our yard. They lived very well with our own cat; though if he ran they would give a chase until he stopped to tell them off. They are sensitive and gentle and not good with a loud boisterous household. They are never off leash in the city unless in a fully fenced space as they will chase anything that catches their eye and could be hit by a car. I do not ever want to be without at least one whippet.

Thanks for a great video. Regarding how whippets are in cars. Freddie (6 years old now) was a rescue and I picked him up from Caithness which was a 6 hour drive. I asked the staff not to give him breakfast as I was picking him up around 08.30. Unfortunately they had fed him and after about 10 minutes in a cage in the back of the car he was sick. I pulled over to clean things and he was so traumatised he messed as well, not a good start. By the time we got home he had had enough of cars. I gradually got him back in would drive a hundred meters and back again, 8ncreasing a little each time. Now when I pick up the car keys he is at the door waiting for me. He comes everywhere. I'm a volunteer driver and he will be quite happy with a 6 hour round trip as long as he gets a stretch of his legs. He sleeps most of the time but really sulks if I go anywhere without him. So...no problems in cars.

Dear OMAHW Long time watcher - first time commenting. Your great vids helped us confirm that a whippet was the right choice for us over here in Aus. We have a 14 month old black brindle male and he is a beautiful dog / companion / family member. I would just like to mention that Whippets are quite susceptible to bites and cuts more so than other breeds that have thicker skin or longer hair. An innocent looking game of chasing at our local park ( we rarely go to dog parks!) ended with our dog getting what looked like a little nip on his side. A Labrador or poodle etc would not of even felt it. But because whippets are wrapped in tight paper thin skin and fine hair there is next to no protection and once punctured tears like tissue paper, if the dog keeps moving . My advice would be if your Whippet is bitten by another dog flush the bite with saline if you can, cover it loosely keep your dog from moving too much and get to the vet asap as the bacteria/infection starts very fast. Normal cuts and scrapes same but not so critical to get to vet. Other than that Whippets are Awesome dogs!!! An affectionate, loyal, smart, funny, fast , cuddly bag of hangers!!!

Beautiful dogs and some good advice, oh man Fox Poo 🤢 I know that blinking smell too. As a trainer we used to go to said to us about poor quality food, you have to feed them more so there’s more to pickup. Still on the plus side warm hands 😂. We now feed our dog raw food much as I hate the stuff our dog seems to thrive on it. We’ve always had insurance and it’s really been a god send for our dogs.

As always, a great video. I agree with nearly everything you say - but stopping a whippet when chasing something is (in my experience) almost impossible..... Recall is fairly easy to teach them - unless they are chasing a small animal.....

Hello from Perth, Australia! I am getting my first whippet in a few days. She is absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to start training her and having a best friend. Just another question, my breeder has her whippets in Martingale Collars and strongly recommends them. Have you ever used them?

I had a whippet growing up and she grew up around cats with no issue. Like you said, if they grow up around them, it’s much easier for them to accept cats. I’m an adult now and recently got a 9 year old whippet rehomed to me. With the way she reacts to cats on a walk, I think she would kill a cat. Her prey drive is so high and she has never been around cats before. So to those out there who have cats and want a whippet, it’s absolutely possible, but your best chance is with a puppy. Start them young.

I concur but I would add that on training, I don't think I've ever actually ever engaged in formal training with any of my whippets. Simple commands and voice tone works as does praise and encouragement. I'm hopeless with money so I do buy insurance until they get too old and it gets too expensive. I've had two that lived to be 15, one that died at 9 due to a heart defect and his twin who made it to 12 because his wasn't so bad. I rescued the latter two at 3 and wasn't told about the heart defects. I went to the vet to have them vaccinated and he checked them as usually, told me the bad news so that was a blow and messed things up for insurance. They cost me a LOT of money when they started getting sick but when you love them, you love them. My current lad is 3 years old and apart from a cut foot that got infected hasn't cost anything yet. Some of mine have slept on the bed, some not. I've always had two before and this can be impossible with two. With my current boy, I am single - he has his side of the bed and I have mine!

Juliet’s head shot up when she heard your voice, probably thinking the same thing I was “Where’s Louie?” ~ have to change that to “Where’s Louie and Rosie” now though 😂 ~ As for the claw and beach questions, Juliet broke her left (index) claw too with having her mad 5 minutes on the beach (healed pretty nicely and started to grow back!) 😊 ~ And don’t get me started on Fox poo, yes we live in a town near a beach but she ALWAYS finds it! And getting a 34kg half greyhound into a bath is harder than it looks 😂😂 ~ As for now, I gotta get ready for work but keep up the great videos and hopefully be seeing you sooooooon, until then keep smiling 😁🐶🐶🙏🏻❤️🚐

Hi there, I have just subscribed to your channel, love your dogs. I have a question, I own an ex racer greyhound blue colour, I feed it on orijen six fish 300g a day. She weighs about 28kg. She has terrible wind would pooch and mutt dog food erradicate this. I’m in despair I’ve had her for 2 1/2 years. Which one do you feed yours.

Having an owned and bred greyhounds and whippets for best part of 40 years... DO NOT FEED THEM DRY OR ANY PROCESSED FOOD. All dogs need to be fed a species appropriate diet. There’s around 10 essential amino acids Thad dogs need and can only get from raw animal protein. Plenty of raw animal fat. Dogs get their energy directly from animal fat. Dry foods contain carbs which prevents it from being able to process fat. This leads to dogs being overweight.

Question 1, nope not really need loads of excise, there the most lazy bunch I’ve had and I love them to bits, 2, I mostly spend about £100 to £150 a month on my four :) 3, Yeah that happened to me this year :( I had insurance but they said they wouldn’t cover it :( 4, I clean mine few times a week plus dental sticks. 6, I’ve always let mine heal them self and crystal been the worse for clar :( 7, 8, I had easy training with them, never had a problem with mine they always ask me to go to the toilet. It’s amazing when I say no to mine they stop dead and hide sometimes, crystal is stubborn sometimes. 12, I never had any problems with there toilet, I did the same when they was puppies I always take them out the same, mine always ask. 13, nope mines not good with cats. 14, mine been really good on recall, I whistle and they come straight back :) Rosie loves the camera. 15, I’ve always had mine sleeping on the bed gets a bit cramped sometimes when it’s cold 😂 but there like hot water bottles :) Beautiful beaches :) 16, yes mine don’t mind the cold they go mad on the snow, mines just don’t like walking in the rain, 17, I rather have mine on harness, but when I had jasmine someone grabbed her by the harness and nearly walked off with her, I had to chase them was a horrible experience :( 18, mine all love to travel. 19, there amazing and loving dogs and I cook for mine great health food :) 20, my girls are great with my nieces 21, I have two who hate fireworks and my other too are ok with them :) and the same two hate thunderstorms. 22, mine are crazy on the beach sandy 23, I bath mine ever month. @@onemanandhiswhippet and it all started when my sister bought a whippet in 2005, I fell in love with them but wasn’t able to finally buy my first whippet till January 2010 :( now I have four beautiful girls, love them to bits, this year was a tough year for me tho with 3 of them and still soo grateful for you and jo and everyone else who helped :) means a lot to me. Did feel so helpless this year :( I’ve spent soo much on my girls. They both have two coats each, hat and neck snoze, three collars each they all have one jumper each but my little sapphire my second she has three different types, ever since she was bitten on her foot in 2016 by a ada snake she feels the cold more, her balance is well off she runs like she’s be drinking all night 😂, but she’s still the same adorable crazy girl :) been some times I have spent more on them per month tho. The funny thing when crystal first lost her claw my Ver said don’t worry it won’t grow back she did ten times before it stopped 😂 she’s my old girl now. Most of the time I wake up she be licking back of my head 😂 I would get another whippet in a heartbeat if I could. There been on so many holiday trips me I’ve lost count now, I never had a problem when I travel from Bournemouth to the highlands Tain in 2013. They mostly slept, there always good when travelled apart from jasmine when I first picked her up she was car sick couple of times but al ok now. Pearl hates a bath but she happy running through dirty puddles 😂 I have leather leads for them since they was puppies with there names engraved on the handle neck part :) there only thing I’ll like to is get them back on to a harness tho and those beautiful jumpers Rosie and Louie have :) ♥️💜🐾🐾🐾🐾🍟🤗🥰😊

Have had two whippets. Around health, they have very fine skin, helps keep them cool when running but it can tear , have spent money on both whippets for stitching where they have snagged themselves on a twig. My present whippet was doing zoomies and slipped a disc and since then I have met several whippet owners who also had the same injury. It’s in the fast running with a swift turn. On a lighter note, they can be drama queens. Both of them have yelped and limped badly . Close examination and trip to vet and no injury found. I have since learned a good exam and sympathy and suddenly they are walking perfectly! Lovely dogs and make the best hot water bottles ever 😆

Obviously you love whippets, no doubt but there are several errors in the vlog. Dental hygiene and overall health of whippets (or any dogs for that matter) is down to their diet. Dogs are 99.9% wolf. The 0.01% difference is the appearance of the dog due to selective breeding. The internal make up and digestive system is exactly the same. They need to be feed like a wolf. I’ve never heard of a wolf hunt dry or wet dog food so don’t feed dogs it. Dogs need to be fed a species appropriate diet consisting of the following 10% bone 10% offal 5% veg/seeds/nuts (which they would eat from animal intestines) 40% animal protein 35% animal fat ALL RAW! The chewing of bones cleans their teeth and will perform better than “the ball on a string.” The sinue acts as a natural floss too. Their teeth are designed perfectly for cutting through meat and bone. I could go on and on about this for days. Happy to debate this with anyone but it’s worth remembering... Processed dog food is only around 100 years old. Dogs - domesticated for around 30,000 years.
