Great video as always. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to spend $1000 to fix up a $200 tool so it'd perform like a more expensive version. It's so hard to just stop and admit that there's nothing that can be done! Kudos for stopping yourself before you got too far into it! That's a very valuable lesson that a lot of people need to learn!

I wonder if regular maintenance, a bit more care and knowing their limitations might avoid problem with some of the lower end power tools, but the old truism - you get what you pay for - almost always applies and especially when it comes to tools. Thanks for yet another helpful and entertaining post Scott.

I have to confess. I often salvage tools that are past their sell by dates. I have machined custom bushes, rewired, and other things for them with the results a mixed bag. I have found that the lower end tools are as you said good for a weekender but unable to take the wear and tear of the higher end models. The higher end models are also more easily repaired. That is not to say that I haven't wasted good time and money trying to "improve" a tool only to be somewhat chagrined at the outcome. But I enjoyed watching this none the less.

I've had a go at doing the exact same thing - trying to improve a cheaper mitre saw - with the exact same result. It makes shopping around for another cheaper saw way more difficult too. I now have a Festool. :)

Yes a predictable result. How do you rate the Festool?
@bafman
@bafman 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I like it a lot. For the reasons Joel mentioned. The dependability/reliability is such a feature you actually forget the issues you were dealing with in the past. I recently did some work in a friends workshop, dealing with cheaper tools, and it hit me how fortunate I was to have tools that simply work the way they're supposed to. It might seem like a small thing but being able to depend on something without checking (and re-checking and re-calibrating) for accuracy makes the whole process that much more enjoyable. Hard to put a price on that I reckon.

I've had my eye on a new miter saw for a long time. Until I can afford it, I'll continue getting by with my current one which is definitely not as accurate as I'd like, and also requires a lot of free space in the back for the siding rails. But it at least gets the basic job done. Thanks for sharing!

Also like the way the Festool can be pushed right back against the wall. Most compound mitre saws need a lot of clearance for the slide mechanism behind the saw. I hope all the manufacturers/designers are thinking about this because I'm in the market for a new one but I don't have "Festool" money.
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious

Yep. It is good advice to get the best tools you can. Sometimes that happens to also be the cheapest and in that case you cheer yourself up with the thought that the tools you have are way more useful to you than the ones you don't have. I bought a Ryobi pedestal drill once years ago and I didn't get to use it for a while. When I did, I found that the morse taper on the quill was bashed about to the point where the chuck would not stay in the drill and the quill had so much run out that I had to go next door to change drill bits. To my disgust, Ryobi agreed that it hadn't been used, at least not noticeably, but they refused to honor any warranty on the machine or even give me a chuck that would hold tight in the quill. I have "repaired" that pedestal drill to a point where it will drill semi-accurate holes but it's still a bit of a dog to use. It will get a milling machine for competition eventually. After those limited dealings with Ryobi, I promised to never buy another Ryobi Tool or to deal with that particular tool shop again. They missed out on quite a few thousand dollars worth of tool purchases by myself and family members and will continue to do so in the future. I know that my decision will not hurt them at all, but that decision has helped me to be more careful with tool purchases and to buy vastly better quality tools when ever possible. Funnily enough, I have a Black & Decker drop saw that's not too vastly different to your sliding job and that has issues too, but different ones to your saw. I still have that saw because it will cut accurately with a bit of coaxing and probably better still if I attended to the faults better. I enjoyed your video and it gave me a few pointers as to where I might be able to improve my saw with out having to buy a new one yet. Thanks. 👍

ive a cheap saw, i shimmed the pivot point on my chopsaw, theres too much play in it so i lock the slides, the detents are crap so i check with a square , its a pile of junk but it gives straight cuts at least. id love a kapex, but wouldnt we all. id say the best upgrade on any saw is a good quality blade. these days i tend to use the table saw with a good mitre guage on it for accurate cuts, love your work mate.

Thanks Kevin. After talking with Joel I'm steering towards the Kapex. I too use the Table saw, but I go from ripping to cross cutting with the sled all the time so I like the convenience of the mitre saw for work flow.

If your shop space allows it, find an old radial arm saw. They get a bad rap, but if you take the time to read the manual, set them up correctly, and just plain don't do the more ridiculous things they advertise being capable of, it'll beat the pants off that festool or any other miter saw you find, day in day out. Easier to set up dust collection, too. For example, I got mine for free off of craigslist from a guy that had bought it new in the 70's and hardly every used it because he didn't know how to set it up. He'd recently purchased a super expensive miter saw to replace it, and thought he was just having me haul away trash. That old ras, once I got it dialed in properly, is now my most reliable piece of equipment.

Discuss the virtues of the Fesstool. When she is onboard with the idea of a quality saw, tell her the price. If she balks, then it will make a quality saw at $1400 or so not look so bad. You might not end up with a Fesstool (which is, admittedly, expensive), but you will get a well-built saw for your workshop. I love how we’re all over here scheming on how to get you a snazzy new saw. 😄

Abrazo, amigo!

The blade seems alright, unfortunately it doesn't spin by itself. Come to think of it: *fortunately* it doesn't spin by itself.

For such a well designed saw the trigger grip on the festool mitre saw is the dumbest un-ergonomic design flaw, in a tool I've ever seen. Anyone with any RSI or arthritis will struggle to use this. Seriously, put your hand out in front of you like you're shaking hands with a ghost, then tilt your wrist up and grip. How is that comfortable?

Well, um.......I just got one yesterday half price, with stand, demo model unused for less than any other quality saw. Lucky for me I have no RSI or Arthritis. I'm going to have to put up with it I guess :)

Lower end tools "built to a price" tend not to be built with servicing in mind - take that motor for example.

I've used woodworking tools in my career for 40 years. I personally believe your thinking is wrong. Your trying to get a tool to do what it isn't designed for. A miter saw is just that, Its not a radial arm saw, it's not meant to have a sliding blade, these are all compromises by manufacturers to get more functionality out of one tool. I use a crosscut jig for wide cuts, I use a miter saw for miters/angles, and most of all, If I need accuracy I use a table saw. Your buying snake oil. And do not get me talking about cordless tools, the most expensive and irritating tools to use. I love the argument that their cordless, and the first thing plugged in on the job is the recharger base,, laughable. I still use the drill/corded Milwaukee 1/2" hole shooter I bought is 1983. Never cost me a dime, if I had bought batteries since then I would pay over 900.00 instead of the 70.00 I spent on it, and it never needs charging

I appreciate your comment Stewart. I was highlighting the limitations of these cheaper saws but also hoping to resolve my blade wobble to no avail. I know what you mean about the cordless tools. They become obsolete very fast due to battery technology ever changing.

Figured we would see some real hints on how to improve a cheap machine to make it more usable. But you got lazy and ran out of imagination for video subject matter.
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like I disappointed you, though thanks for the feedback all the same. The video was highlighting that the cheaper saws are almost impossible to get the same high standard as the expensive saws and people should be realistic for what the cheaper saws can do. About all you can do is fit a good blade. I didn't get lazy, I dismantled the saw, tried fixing serious issues and realised the futility.
@428Mario

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious actually you started down a decent path and then stopped. There is certainly a way to fix the backlash in the spindle and true the blade surface. The angled parts are a matter of figuring out the error and allowing for it. Time vs money, which do you have the most of? The disappointment was seeing the title of the video and not seeing it thru.
