The consensus of scientific studies shows that the vast majority of our traits are determined by our genetics. The other part is determined by the all experiences up in till this point (with events happening in your childhood having the biggest impact since your brain is still forming). That not to say that you can't change to some degree but it is completely wrong to believe you can suddenly override your genetics (and the way information is structure in your brain) just because you heard a 5 minute motivational video on youtube. If you do change, you will do so very slowly, progressively and with difficulty since you're going against the current structure of your brain (i.e personality).

a mind hack I use to overcome doing-things-I'm-uncomfortable-with-but-must-do is by thinking that life is a game, and the tasks are the quests, other people are just NPCs. it doesn't matter if I failed or succeed, I'd still gain experience points. but that still doesn't make social interaction more exciting. especially when the hack effect has worn off.

Introvert turned extrovert here. Humans are made to adapt to their environment. This is why your muscles grow when you work out. I don't see how the brains should be any different. At the same time, I believe that being educated and capable of critical thinking is more important than raw IQ.

Well, your brain IS a muscle so the comparison is more than obvious, and when we say that "IQ is genetic", we should see to avoid ALL environmental biases (which has never been done in all IQ studies that I checked) and understand that correlation does not imply causation, in addition to the fact that the "genetics" behind IQ may simply be due to genes that may change expression over the life of an individual, your brain is composed on average about 95% of these types of genes, so even if IQ remains genetic, the environment influences it to a really large extent. By the way, other studies show that we can increase our IQ by 20 to 30 points by training in mathematical and spatial representation, and that it can continue : www.theguardian.com/science/2011/oct/19/teenagers-iq-scores-adolescence Another important point that reinforces the impact of education and experience on IQ! ;)

I nearly didn't click on this video just because of the title. naturally, I'm a growth mindset kind of person and I think IQ is stupid because I believe I can learn anything I want to learn (and I believe IQ is not at all relevant to adaptiveness, success or happiness). however, in the end, I did click on it because this is the second-to-last video on your channel that I have not watched and I have enjoyed all your videos so far. so, because the video doesn't really talk about IQ, I think the video is titled inappropriately. what if you were to title it, "Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset" - or something like that? personally, seeing the words "growth mindset" would have inspired me to click it, and I think it's more positive, too.

The title is designed to lure people in who take iq to seriously, such as myself, and show them that they should move forward instead of quivering from the thought of not being good enough on a innate level. also I don't think you understand what iq is and you've probably never taken a test before, iq does not test knowledge, it tests your ability to see patterns and your spatial reasoning skills. and although iq is not necessary to live a fulfilling life it is a very useful tool, kind of like memory. but iq won't get you anywhere without patience and determination.

It's funny, or sad really. I've always been a strong believer in the growth mindset, or that basically any human can achieve pretty much anything given the right motivation, training, environment so on. But my whole life i've lived with a fixed mindset controlling me. In school or at games and sports i've always approached it with a view that either i have the skill or i dont, now i've always believed i have the skill for anything i've encountered, which makes me a coward towards the possibility of failure. Rather never try and never fail than prove my assumptions wrong. I definately wish i could fully embrace the growth mindset which i believe to be true with all my heart, on a subconscious level also.

Tijmen J IQ is a measure of how good you are at thinking intelligently. It's not a representation of your physical properties (ie brain size). If you train to become better at thinking, your IQ will increase. On a tangent, IQ is a rediculous measure, and some people have gone through the effort of taking 20 IQ tests, to have the results range from 105 (pretty average) to 160 (incredibly genius). My point, don't worry about a silly number to indicate your intelligence, learn to be confident about your intellectual capacity, and if you're not happy with it, train to improve it.

***** There's many "textual" forms, but most of them seem to agree on 130+ means "Upper Extreme". (Wikipedia has a ton of them with sources. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_classification) 160 is definitely level of genius. I think the only people unable to train that are people unwilling to train it. Especially people who always keep telling themselves that they cannot learn it.

Aidiakapi I don't know, maybe it's not entirely possible for more intelligent people to know what it's like to be pretty unintelligent. I know some people who just don't have the ability to learn. Not intentionally and not because they think they can't, they just simply can't seem to comprehend certain things that we take for granted. Yes, 160 is genius, just not incredibly genius haha. More like 180+ is incredibly genius. But that's just a subjective term.

Ex drug addict high school dropout who had a 115 IQ score who also thought they were doomed to failure here. Ever since I got out of jail 8 years ago, I made the decision that I wasn't going to let my failures stop me. I now have a 125 IQ and run my own business. I was kind of forced into business as it's hard to find a decent job with a record. It was either work at McDonald's or do something with myself. I decided to change my outlook on life and learn. Never let society determine if you can succeed or fail. Go against the grain and give life a good kick in the rear. One thing that's constant is change. You're either changing for the better or changing for the worst. Pick one.

+Sodium Raccoon I think. Yes you can. You can improve the result of the IQ tests just by doing it more often, this will higher your results, but it doesn't mean you will be more inteligent. One definition of Inteligence is "coping better and faster in unknown situation" if true. Then you can increase your performance just by increasing your health(especially of the brain) status. If the kids became more inteligent while growing, why not the adult person grow too, it is possible obviosly. Genetics can be a limmiting factor but, even they can be changed, some people already do it in different way. It becomes too long, not enought space to defend my theses :D

I think there are two major errors in this video 1. Thinking that a guy with a low IQ can't become a genius does not mean you have a "fixed mindset", the video however implies that that is what it means. Studies have shown that 65-80% of your IQ is genetics, which means that if someone with for example 80 IQ points works super hard to get smarter, he will still probably never break 110 or 120, which is not even close to being a genius 2. You completely ignore the fact that a lot of people have a fixed mindset when they view others, but not when they view themselves. This video assumes that people use the same standard and logic when they view themselves and when they view the people around them.
@Norway1503
@Norway1503 8 жыл бұрын
You "think so". Well too bad studies show otherwise can what you're guessing based on no evidence. To be more precise from the first comment, around 65-80% of your IQ is genetically determined, meaning the genes you get from your parents.
@FeelFree3
@FeelFree3 8 жыл бұрын
People have fixed mindset when they view others, so for e.g. when a person failed badly, his/her colleague & supervisor may say "you suck, you are not suitable for this job" and hardly give the person a second chance, this cause lots of embarrassment and discouragement make it hard for the person who fail to open his/her mindset.
@Aidiakapi
@Aidiakapi 8 жыл бұрын
"Inheriting" intelligence isnt the same as genes. Most proof I've seen of intelligence being linked to genes, is actually linking it to heritage. My point is that if you have intelligent parents, it's likely that the environment in which you grow up, includes more intelligent conversation. The child then adapts to also become more intelligent to keep up. That's not genes, that's simply being more intellectually stimulated during childhood, therefore becoming more intelligent themselves.
@Norway1503
@Norway1503 8 жыл бұрын
This is simply not true. The studies I have seen have shown that identical twins, twins and siblings who were grown up in completely different families showed similar IQ because of genes, which proves that your genes are indeed a big part of your IQ. I saw a video of someone who had a PhD in something related to this topic(don't remember exactly what it was). And he linked sources and explained this phenomenon.
@KokuzumaHatena
@KokuzumaHatena 6 жыл бұрын
Ah crap, again this shit.. If you try to justify the heritability of IQ by Cyril Burt's experience with the twins, then Leon Kamin, a psychologist at Princeton, has carefully checked out the details of this research. He discovered an extraordinary amount of contradictions and errors. For example, the late Sir Cyril Burt, to whom we owe much more information about twins raised separately, continued his research on intelligence for more than forty years. Although he has argued for the representativeness of his various versions, some of his coefficients change only from the fourth decimal point, which is statistically impossible. It was then proved that Cyril Burt had been researched and that his studies were just as imaginary, as much as the collaborators who would have participated in it, and that it had been invented from scratch (Research No. 113, July - August 1980) Also, other studies show that we can increase our IQ by 20 to 30 points by training daily in veral, mathematical and spatial representation tests : www.theguardian.com/science/2011/oct/19/teenagers-iq-scores-adolescence Another important point that reinforces the impact of education and experience on IQ! ;) Besides, if IQ was really 80% genetic, in studies on "IQ increasing", we should not see an increase of 20 points (from ~80 to ~100), and this by a simple mathematical calculation : If the 20 IQ difference points between 80 and 100 IQ persons represent 100% of the differences, then the 20% of the points due to the environment would represent 4 points of the differences. But we see an increase to 20 points. The 80% are already extremely incoherent! x') 20 pts -> 100% (20x20)/100 = 4 pts ? -> 20% And if you want to contradict me by telling me that the 20 points of difference may not represent 100% of the differences, know that if the differences were greater or smaller, we would still see an increase or decrease in environmental points superior to the famous "20%", I let you check yourself with the calculation that I put you above! ;) Finally, I will advise you this good documentary : "QI, Histoire d'une imposture" (or "IQ, History of an imposture" in English), if you manage to find subtitles, because this one develops the important fact that IQ is not even considered by psychologists (who are directly behind IQ and their use) as a test of intelligence but as a simple test of performance to detect emotional or motor problems to the individual to contribute to diagnose and treat the patient. Its use as a "measure of capacity" is therefore an abberation : kzbin.info/www/bejne/q33RoYSOhMybqq8

TriggerCurtis I highly recommend you read Mindset by Carol Dweck. She gives a great overview of the subject. But in my opinion, I think we overrate talent too much. We look at success and all the benefits it brings while failing to see the hard work that goes behind it. If we took more notice of that, then we'd realize that talent isn't that big of a factor. Even stories about people being born geniuses are often inflated. A common example would be Mozart. People say he was a naturally talented prodigy and composed music when he was only a child. However, for starters, his early set of music wasn't really critically acclaimed. And more importantly, were also heavily corrected by Mozart's father who was a musician himself. In closing, read some examples of people who overcome their shortcomings through hard work and most importantly, read the book :)

FFS! IQ and learning are two different things! A person with an IQ of 80 can learn multiple languages and person with an IQ of 200 could learn only one language. Does that mean that the person who knows multiple languages increased their IQ????? Is the person who learned multiple languages somehow more intelligent than the person who only knows one language? No. IQ is a measurement of how easily a person can learn and apply knowledge, not a measurement of how much knowledge they have!

Growth mindset is great to have. Person with growth mindset will achieve much more in life then person with fixed mindset. But having growth mindset will not increase your IQ. IQ is your capacity to learn. How fast will you solve problems. You are born with what ever level you have. Yes, probably everyone can learn anything. But those with higher IQ will learn it faster... And that will make all the difference. Still this doesn't mean you should not have growth mindset. I believe everyone should strive to achieve what is best in their capacity and grow constantly

The issue with the opening question is that IQ tests your ability to solve a problem given all the information, how quickly and how frequently you are correct determines your IQ. I have to find out why I have an IQ of 132 & seem to only to have the parietal lobe of Paris Hilton who has an IQ of 115 as I only appeared to be that brilliant at maths in the classroom. I seemed to have an attempt made on me only to fit into that profile meaning I tried & achieved to the best of my ability & no one seems to want me for a job or relationship. Note it seems to be the fact as if I'm the only person in my area (Newcastle, Australia) who doesn't have a fixed mindset, meaning I have went solo & tried all different things. I was sent to see a doctor in 2009 by an employer,the doctor committed me to a mental hospital who kept me under observation for a week. I was diagnosed with having persecutory delusions because I told them I felt that people such as that were always attacking my character. One of the hospital doctors just said I think you're right to go home,a state department of health psychologist & nurse said that they would never employ me again because I embarrassed the employer & their client meaning I made them look bad. Him & her said that it would be too costly for them to get me to fit into their protocol meaning that I'm better off looking for another job. All of the employers haven't been any better since then,so I haven't worked for over 5 years,so can anyone tell me how I can improve myself & my IQ so that I have better success in life after all I have been through with all the sort of people I've talked about ????

This idea that everyone can achieve the same heights with enough dedication and commitment is just profoundly wrong. To give an example, I've been skateboarding for 10 years. I'm pretty passionate about. I used to skateboard every single day for years. Constantly trying to push myself. 10 years later, although I'm skilled, there are people who have skateboarded an equal amount of time and are significantly better. There are also people who have been skateboarding the same amount of time and are significantly worse. Now, for someone to tell me that the whole reason I'm not pro is because I didn't put enough effort in is crazy. That's just not true. People can not achieve the same things. We need to fucking get with reality. It's gonna be significantly harder for kids to find out what their true strengths are if we convince them they can cultivate any strength if they work hard enough. No you can't.

If the growth mindset can be learned, wouldn't that imply starting with a growth mindset? I mean, if you have a fixed mindset, then wouldn't you believe that you'll always have a fixed mindset, because it's a self-fulfilling prophecy?

lol...no you can not truly grow your intelligence. You can stimulate your intelligence and extend it to your genetic limit by studying and searching for stimulus and combining the studies. You were born with a genetic path that set your intelligence size with an upper limit. Depend on the level of stimulus you faced and the environment, you might or might not reach that upper limit during your life. If you do reached that limit and at that point you procreate, your children will have that limit possibly at a higher number but with a very small level. It is only possibly because there are many other factors that can interfere. Intelligence is mostly genetics / inherited. Yes your mindset is super important. many mediocre people have the genetic code in them to be 20 or even 30 points higher intelligence but they never reach because of lack of stimulus and most importantly the wrong mindset. I give the video a thumb up, pointing out the importance of growing mindset.

+Erik Präntare If you think you are good at something you have more confidence in it, which in turn means you are more effective. You are good at everything, but you can always improve at everything also. Thats the mindset people should have, the first one will give you more confidence to do the task and the second will keep you curious.

What the hell is this topic? I have a master's degree in psychology and have never even heard about this "growth mindset" stuff. It's just OCEAN traits but given a new name? Why not just tell us what personality trait it is then? Why this pseudo-scientific "growth mindset" stuff? And why not even answer the question in the video title? This is not just a cop-out. It's misleading. A stupid kid can raise his IQ? Really? By how much? Why even say such a thing without any proof?
