How about trying to use a tightly covered slow cooker to melt the resin shavings at low heat over a longer time period of time. My theory is that the reason the resin shavings burn is because the amount of heat being applied is too much and as a result does not allow the bonds between the molecules of the shavings to slowly become unstable and then break down, causing the shavings to transform into a fluid state.
@pettigrewwoodworks4 жыл бұрын
Nice outcome. Just so you know, epoxies are thermoset polymers and by nature usually will not melt or dissolve.

That's what I thought, i left a comment. Since it takes 2 chemicals to harden, you'd have to be able to separate them in order to reverse the chemical reaction. It only goes one way, the reaction that is. The nightlight is a super idea! It looks amazing!
@claudiodiaz97524 жыл бұрын
He probably already knew that. But people kept asking after he made a video with reasonable ways to reuse it. That's why he made this last video to show people it's not possible to reuse it the way they would expect.

Ok I understand and I know it’s a joke but i would like to prove that it is in fact a stainless steel cup. So if you look closely you will be able to see horizontal lines in the cup and I have a stainless steel cup and they do look similar. I also a have cup that is closer to its size and shape and again they are very similar I also have a couch cup holder and although similar, there are many differences

I liked the"thicker wisps of smoke" effect the dyed shavings displayed in the resin. I see a potential use for that and similar effects in future projects. Could there be a possible use for leftover shavings as a near-transparent spacer between objects in resin? For example, you choose items that tend to clump together, all float to the top or bottom of the container when put in curing resin, etc. Granted, the spaces in between the objects wouldn't be completely transparent, but that could be an effect of its own. Just a thought. Love your channel!

Ok finished the video and I do have a idea, the most plausible way is to treat Resin like plastic. When melting down plastics you recycle after you get the pieces as small as you can you can do one of two things, lol it in the oven like Peter Brown which you saw is a bad idea here as direct heat burns it. The other method is double boiling you were on the right track when you just put it in water, it just doesn't allow for heat transfer that will melt the resin or plastic for that you need to allow the heat to flow from the water into a more conductive item that doesn't also have a cooling agent. So boil your water just the same, but do not add the resin to it. Instead take another pot (best bet is a rounded bottom one for even heat) and set it in the water as it boils, the n add to that the chopped up resin and hopefully it will react like ABS (Lego) and HDPE (Milk jugs, bottles of is very common) and slowly melt without burning. Double boiling is how some candies where you want the crystals to form even in are made (a great reference for this if you can find it is the old Food Network Show Good Eats with Alton Brown) and from my very basic understandin of plastics is they behave a lot like sugar. I could be very wrong so be careful but one thing I know double boiling has very little chance to burn what is being heated. Also sorry for the double comment, I had to say thanks and knew that my reply after the video might be a long winded one. Hope no one you know is in danger during this silly distancing process, my local comic con was pushed back from this month to July but hey at least I'll be going to it then. My shop will make its vendor debut there once I get it up to the level of con size, it is a goal and it's thanks to inspiration from my fellow Makers like yourself I ever even thought to make it a dream.

I don't think a cured epoxy resin is going to melt in a double boiler, considering there was only scorching and no melting in the oven. A double boil is more useful if you need to melt something at a low temperature without burning it, like chocolate or egg custard. Since water boils at 212ºF, the double boiler can't get any hotter than that. Interesting video!
