Just did! Just for you know, you can. BUT... Use SAME brand and SAME speed. If everything goes well, the MB might still recognize both sticks as dual channel, which was my case (16gb + 8gb Kingston Fury 2666Mhz).

For those wondering if mixing RAM with different capacity but same clock speed and latency is fine : Your RAM will run in Flex Mode, meaning it will still run in dual channel and a portion of the RAM run in single channel. For example : 8 GB + 4 GB RAM = 4 GB + 4 GB will run in dual channel, and the remaining 4 GB from the 8 GB will run in single channel. Single channel means the remaining 4 GB will run in lower performance compares to the dual mode one. BUT from my research, someone said that actually Flex mode's dual channel is (arguably) still losing by a bit in performance compares to its pure dual channel counterpart. I don't know if it's true. To be safe : make sure that you have the same capacity, clock speed, latency etc. But if you can't, you'll still be benefited from the Flex Mode's dual channel although the performance might possibly be not as optimal as the pure dual channel mode. Would love to hear anyone's experience on this. Regardless, running in Flex mode is still MUCH better than having a single ram running in single channel. But keep in mind Flex mode only works for modern motherboards.

💻 I have a question! My laptop currently has 8GB RAM, 3200MHz, DDR4, and I'm looking to upgrade. Can I buy a 16GB RAM stick and combine it with my existing one to make it 24GB RAM (same frequency and MHz)? Is this okay? If anyone knows, please let me know! 🙏✨

Great informative video guys. I was running 16gig of HyperX 3200 ram in my system, but decided to upgrade to 32gig, So I bought 32gig of 3200 T-Force Vulcan Z ram at a good price. My wifes work pc also had 16gig of ram. I thought she had the same brand of ram as my 16gig I just changed out, but alas, it was a diff brand, Corsair, but all the other specs were the same. I'd did some research on ram compatability, and found I might get lucky & I could use them together. I stuck my old 16gig ram in her system, and it works just fine. It's been in there for around 8 months now, and she hasn't had an issue. Btw, all the ram is DDR4, which I had heard was a very much hit & miss with mixing ram. I guess I got lucky. :)

Currently running the 2x16gb sticks in dual channel. In theory they should run fine as they'll be the same speeds 3600 mhrtz, and same manufacturer, but wanted to get others' opinions. @@madaragog2689 The thing is, with running this configuration (flex mode), you will get the full speed for the 2x16 stick, but the other 2 will run in single channel.... look it up, I been wondering about this too so I did a little research, it's sad that it does this.. as for the performance impact, not quite sure, but as you will have 2x16 (32) at full speed, the impact should be minimal, UNLESS, you want to do stuff like he mentions editing or 3d software or some very specific games that are memory hungry, but it's hard to imagine a game that make use of beyond 32gb, ..(I wouldn't be surprised if an odd game like factorio for instance would be affected somehow) But you should also know this : 8gb is single rank 16gb kits is dual rank, you get slightly better perf running dual rank, especially with zen 4 (non 3xd I would imagine), but if you run 4x8gb, suddenly it becomes dual rank, it's quite tricky, not sure about the real impact with other architectures than zen4 but there are tests out there.

I found ram to be one of the most important parts of my build. This is because it's the reason I had to get rid of my Lenovo Laptop that I was using before. It only had 8gb of ram and I was always maxing it out. I also use the adobe suit of products now as well. I have 32gb but I regret not going with 3600, and now I'm like shit why didn't I just spring for the 3600 instead of 3200. I'm thinking of adding a bit more. Do I need to add 32gb more, or if I buy the same exact brand and speed can I add another 16gb? I'll probably just add another 32 bc why not, but I'm just curious if I have to add the same capacity as well as speed & brand.

Im not completely agree with some statings in the video. If you use sticks with mismatching FACTORY DEFAULTS, that doesnt mean you cant set em' up in the bios as matching specs. The factory speed and timing doesnt really matter, since every memory stick can work on countless different setting, so you just set them up in a way that both sticks can work on. Actually I have 2x2666 and 2x3000 sticks, so 4 sticks, and i can run them on 3000mhz with my custom timings without a problem, however these sticks are completely differ given the factory specs.

I was told that if you want a four stick RAM configuration then you should buy all four picks as a package as the manufacturer has "matched" the set. And, if you start with two sticks of RAM, then buy two more of the exact same model from the same manufacturer (i.e.the same part number), then they may not necessarily be "matched". Is that just crazy talk? It sounds like crazy talk.
@ThermaltakeAustralia
@ThermaltakeAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
It's not crazy talk! There's some truth to that, however, while it's best to buy 4 of the same brand and type in the same package - it's still totally okay to pair up separately too. In actual fact, it's actually better to get the capacity that you want in two sticks rather than four. I.e. if you want 64gb, then it's best to go with 2x32gb instead of 4x16gb. 😊

@@ThermaltakeAustraliaokay but what if I have 2x16, just bought 2x32.. in what configuration can someone use all 4 sticks and what are the tradeoffs? 1. Capacity - doesn't seem like it should matter? 2. Frequency - all ram will just run at the worst spec of the pairs? So 2x16 @3200 with 2x32 @3600 will all only run at 3200 (possible bios tweaks but just assume this)? 3. Latency - do these run similar to frequency? As in you'll just get the worst between the two or are they not compatible at all if not very close? Where's the tolerance? 4. Slot vs spec / capacity considerations - pending how the above Qs work; id assume just put the biggest capacity pair into the 'right' (2 & 4 always?) slots?

You have 32gb but in single channel mode. Capacities all have to be the same for Dual channel

If I had 16x1 ram of t force can I buy a different brand but the same speed and gb will it work or nah?
@ThermaltakeAustralia
@ThermaltakeAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
You should be okay, as long as its the same amount of GB, same Mhz AND same CL ratings, it may also work regardless if the CL ratings are different, but mixing and matching ram sticks can be a bit of a lottery situation.

I bought a stick if GSkillz Ripjaw at micro center *( it was made to be sold there so I can’t get it anywhere )* so I found an identical stock from a different company same timing CL11 11-11-11-28 1600mhz both are dual rank, it’s a Teamgroup 8GB SoDIMM it’s the only stick I can find that match’s perfect to the ripjaw I bought that you can only get at micro center and I only need one stick all they have is a 16Gb kit left within 200 miles of me of that same ram, I was in micro center buying a monitor about two months ago a women was buying a gaming PC for her kids B-Day the salesman told her the more RGB a PC had the faster it would run especially having RGB ram he said that helped the video card create more colors lol a lot of millennial’s really believe RGB male there PC faster I’ve watch some KZbin PC builders they say ram isn’t good unless it’s RGB I’ve read of RGB causing r to burn out RGB lighting is hot a lot hotter than ppl think

Can i use one 32 instead of 2 16 gigs?
@ThermaltakeAustralia
@ThermaltakeAustralia Жыл бұрын
You can! However, it would perform better as the 2 x 16gb sticks rather than the single 32 stick if the slots are designed for dual channel memory.

@ThermaltakeAustralia
@ThermaltakeAustralia 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Unfortunately, we don't recommend mixing capcities of ram as it never seems to work well. It does work, i.e. your PC/Laptop will detect it.. but it won't perform well.
