This is my first-time re-visiting old #1 draft picks of the NHL and I feel they got fewer busts than the NBA produce lol. If they weren't HOFers some of them actually became solid hands but I guess its easier to become that with more roster spots in the NHL.

For the 1971 pick, I find it odd that even a team like the California Golden Seals would trade it away..... to the Montreal Canadiens, of all teams. At the time, Montreal was looking for someone to replace the then-soon to retire Jean Beliveau, so they kept their eye on this junior hockey sensation playing in Quebec, who went by the name of Guy Lafleur. Hockey history may have been a bit different had the Golden Seals held on to that pick.

Gretzky was already contracted with the Oilers WHA team (you could play in the WHA from the age of 18, but not in the NHL until age 20) so he was not eligible in the draft :) Could have canceled his contract but had no intention playing for Colorado Rockies.
