Madison Square, for those interested, is the intersection of Broadway, 23rd street and Fifth Avenue, which is also where Madison Ave starts just off to the East and the orignal garden and it’s succesor was just off this area, Madison Ave and 26th Street. The site, ironically given the current building’s location, was built out of an old trains station after the city banded locomotives south of 42nd street (which is why Grand Central is where it is). The orignal opened in 1879 and was owned by the Vanderbilt family since they owned the railroad that got kicked out. It was demolished then rebuilt in 1890 on the same spot and that building lasted until 1925. The third Garden was built on 8th Ave and 50th Street, this lasted to the 1960s when the current version opened on 7th and 33rd.

Fun fact: The Red Wings first actual arena in the NHL was in Windsor, Ontario since they bought the WHA franchise in Windsor who were the reigning Stanley Cup winner's and the Olympia was still being built during their first season in the league. They were also named the Detroit Cougars at the time, keeping the name of the Windsor team until 1930 when they renamed it to the Falcons for two seasons before settling on the Red Wings in 1932.
